A warm welcome to all storytellers and listeners at the Storytelling Festival presented by Weber State University and the Department of Teacher Education. We are pleased to have you with us, and anticipate that you will enjoy the high quality and creativity of the stories presented. We are delighted that this event has become an annual tradition in our community. Paul H. Thompson, President Weber State University President Thompson shares bedtime stories with his grandchildren. The Karen J. Ashton Storytelling Award For years, Karen J. Ashton has pursued a simple dream—that the art of the storytelling might be ennobled and preserved throughout the state of Utah. Her insight and determination led to the founding of the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival and she continues as an advisor to the festival today. The Karen J. Ashton Storytelling Award was created in recognition of her many contributions. The award is presented annually to a deserving community citizen who perpetuates the art and purpose of storytelling. 1999 Karen J. Ashton Storytelling Award Recipient Bill Higley Weber State University alum and former Weber County School teacher, Bill Higley, is the 1999 recipient of the Karen J. Ashton Storytelling Award. Bill has been telling stories almost his entire life. As a boy scout, camping in the Uintahs, he was nominated the camp storyteller. In high school, he became interested in doing mime and was inspired by Marcel Marceau. Since then, he’s had a lot of success performing pantomime, which always tells a story. Bill took his act to the schools, as part of the Weber County Library Reader’s Theatre. He used storytelling, as well as pantomime, and always encouraged children to read. Currently, Bill is a free-lance storyteller in the schools and can be found every Saturday morning for storytime at the Bookshelf. He works during the week at the Treehouse Children’s Museum. He has been with the Festival from the beginning and together we celebrate Bill Higley as the 1999 recipient of the Karen J. Ashton Storytelling Award. Past Karen J. Ashton Storytelling Award Recipients 1998 Steven R. Mecham 1997 Anneliese Konkol 1996 Phyllis Dixon Shaw How To Eat A Poem Don’t be polite. Bite into them. Pick them up with your fingers and lick the juice that may run down your chin. They are ready and ripe now, whenever you are! You do not need a knife or fork or spoon or plate or napkin or tablecloth. For there is not core or stem or rind or pit or seed or skin to throw away! Enjoy -Eve Marriam In this delightful poem, Eve Marriam provides the pattern for enjoying the silence of the written word. Storytelling provides the pattern for relishing the spoken word. Stories provide us with nourishment to feed our souls and our imaginations. At its heart, storytelling preserves the old, defends the present, and encourages the future. There is not a single story to tell, but a kaleidoscope of stories, changing, flowing, crashing against one another, each one playing off the others in an infinity of pure and exciting patterns. The storytellers are various, and the stories themselves infinite. As the fourth annual Weber State University Storytelling festival unfolds, we invite people of all ages to experience the magic of well told stories. As an outgrowth of schoool storytelling festivals, this year’s event will once again feature nearly 80 student storytellers, some of them returning for a fourth appearance. Thirty regional tellers have been selected to share their mystic. Four exciting national tellers, new to this festival, will complete the offerings. With the creative imagination of Brenda Wong Aoki, combined musical and storytelling talent of Patrick Ball, performance artistry of Olga Loya, and the magic of award-winning author/speaker Rafe Martin, this fourth annual Storytelling Festival provides a menu that will please every palate! Partake and enjoy! Program cover design by Kay Stevenson Original logo design by Norm Skanchy Brenda Wong Aoki San Francisco, California This talented actress and dancer has great technical skill. Her story--about first attempts to find herself in rootless America, the first generation daughter of a Chinese mother and Japanese father--is one that any American searching for herself or himself will find fascinating and inspirational. This artist combines the elements of Japanese theater, American pop culture, and a sure-footed stage presence into a stunning performance. Patrick Ball San Ramon, California As a premier Celtic harp player, Patrick Ball is also an acclaimed storyteller in the Celtic tradition. As such, he is “a rare artist.’ He plays the ancient, legendary brass-strung harp of Ireland with its crystalline, bell-like voice, and he tells marvelous old tales of wit and enchantment. Thus, he combines storytelling and music, two of the richest traditions of Celtic culture, and blends them in concert to create a warm and magical performance. Olga Loya San Jose, California Celebrate the magic and the triumph of los cuentos (the stories) as Olga Loya shares the art of storytelling. A rich tapestry of oral literature is woven by this storyteller from traditional and original tales and family and personal histories. A powerful voice and presence, her stories engage, educate, entertain, and help reflect on the spiritual side of ancestral memories. She believes that stories are good for the mind and the heart. Rafe Martin Rochester, New York An author of over a dozen books, this storyteller breathes life into stories. Like a modern day Hans Christian Andersen, Rafe Martin paints word pictures for his listeners. His technique is flawless as he uses colorful verbs for strong narrative drive, rich details to tickle the imagination, repetition and dialogue to get his listeners involved, and a wonderful voice that rises and falls with the action.
