May 4, 1918 Mother Mine: Just rec’d a letter from you dated Apr. 9 enclosing the write up and pictures. Glad to know that you are all well and that Ogden still wags in the same old way. Haven’t heard a word from Jack and no letter from Theron for at least a month. Wrote him just a short time ago and will again soon. Exect to go on permission in at least a month and if I knew where Jack was would endeavor to see him. Received a pcg from you all chocolate etc. and it is being enjoyed by myself and comrades fully. We are now in what is considered a very quiet sector, or in other words, outside of the big noise. For how long- don’t know. Dutch can tell you approximately where. Have our yard fixed with drains so that water won’t stand in pools and dry gavel all over. Also a small garden on one side and flower boxes on the gate stands. The place smelt terrible when we arrived but is fine now. We are also back to where we eat at a table again and our cooking is much improved. Our bunks are nice and airy having no window- plenty of cracks- no door. The sun has shined three days in succession and a few of the boys have been in swimming. I go on post tomorrow for two days then return to qrts. We go out or on reserve every two days then return and clean car, kitchen, etc., then duplicate. The morale here is high and I believe the French morale is the highest it has been since I came to France. Tell the kids to write to me and also Charles.
