Show May 14/18 Army Post Office 735 AEF France. Dear Brother Ted: I just got a letter from mother telling me that you had won the French War Cross. I cannot tell you how tremendously proud I am of you, how I have told all my associates of your very enviable success. It’s the one thing that all of us Americans want to take back from France. I hope to get a chance at it and maybe luck will be with me though right now it looks very doubtful. I am here in a little town working hard and doing my “damndest” to get to the front but with little success and I can’t see how I can get a cross where I am though. I will admit that I have received the “double cross” on three distinct occasions but as our Aunt Trude that mother is always quoting says “Remember their Origin”. I did and considering those that bestowed it I overlooked their bestowal of the double cross upon me. By the way this letter I recieved from mother was the first letter I have received since my arrival in France, the first of March. I hope that you got your mail better than that when you came over here. I have been chief clerk in the Depot Quartermaster’s Office at this place since my arrival here until a few days ago. I would have liked to have continued and systematized the office but I was relieved, not being a member of the QM outift. I am now sort of a general utility man and will try to do my bit with the signal officer where I have been working the last few days. When I was in Ogden in January for a couple of days I saw Wattis and he sure is growing. He is (rest of letter is missing.) |
