006_POW Camp American Girls |
Description |
A collection of photographs and oral history quotes that document the history of the Prisoner of War camp at Defense Depot Ogden that opened in 1943 and closed in 1946. One time I was in the warehouse and I had about 25 prisoners in three bays at the warehouse. They were working and all I was doing was wandering from bay to bay. The Lieutenant who was in charge of DDO, he said "One of the prisoners is missing." I said "Oh, he's probably just in the restroom." But he didn't believe me, and so he said, "I'm calling your commanding officer." The Italian Sergeant knew quite a bit of English, so I asked "Where is the prisoner?" He says, "He's in the next warehouse talking with his girlfriend." Actually I've always said we weren't there to keep them from escaping, we were there to keep the American girls away from them. - Carl Fernelius |
