New Zion Baptist Church is going forth in the matchless name of Jesus the Christ in prayer and supplication as we endeavor to seek a pastor of this great church. Through God’s grace Reverend Elwood N. Stewart led New Zion through the COVID pandemic year of 2020-2021, holding the church’s first teleconference service in April 2020 having 40-55 participants and evolving it into virtual services through the Zoom application in the beginning of 2021. Although the virus closed the building physically, New Zion never closed spiritually. Pastor Stewart with a prayerful mind and a reopening committee persevered through the safety challenges and New Zion physically reopened on May 2, 2021. Pastor Stewart will dedicate the first New Zion Historic Library in April 2023 in honor of Dr. Donald R. Carpenter and Sis. Sarah McClellan for their tireless effort in preserving not only New Zion history but Ogden African American history for us now and generations to come. Pastor Stewart has graciously and prayerfully served as New Zion’s Interim Pastor since August 1, 2018, to present day and we continue to thrive in our 97 years. — Praise God! COTR), Se History The Wall Avenue Baptist Church was the beacon of light in the community from 1918 to 1928. It has seven Clergymen it’s closing. In 1929, Sis. Georgia Holt arrived in Ogden from Los Angeles, CA, reopened the Wall Avenue Baptist Church doors. She began a Sunday School with one quarter and the Bible. There were 5 succeeding pastors until Rev. Benjamin J. Washington accepted the call and delivered his first sermon on April 3, 1952. Under the leadership of Rev. Benjamin J. Washington, the church had many noteworthy accomplishments, purchasing its first parsonage in July 1952 and bought two property lots. As the membership outgrew the Wall Avenue Baptist Church, the second prayer was answered and the congregation was blessed to acquire property for The the building of a new edifice located at 2935 Lincoln Avenue in Ogden, which it currently remains. groundbreaking services were held on Sunday, May 16, 1954. Bell for the church to be named “The New Zion Missionary Baptist Church”. Thus, the Wall Avenue Baptist Church had a new name and became “The Church Built by Faith.” Rev. Washington pastured New Zion until 1961. Many pastors stood in John’s shoes from 1962 to 1978. Noted during these years is Rev. Lacy K. Curry, 1965-68 under his leadership two area properties were purchased at 2957 and 2959 Lincoln Avenue and Rev. Willie Davis, where another property the parsonage mortgage for 709-33" Street in Ogden, was paid in full. These properties are still owned today. In February 1979, Rev. N. Lawrence Liggins of Texarkana, TX, accepted the call to pastor and preached his first sermon in May 1979. During the pastorate of Rev. Liggins, our aphorism “Love Ye One Another” [John 13:34] was adopted and in November 1979, New Zion witnessed its largest number of baptisms, to date, where 25 souls were saved. The Rev. Isaac P. Brantley was extended and accepted the call to pastor New Zion from 1990 to 1996. New Zion called Rev. James Abrams of Sacramento, CA in 1997. Under Rev. Abrams’ tenure, a historical event took place when he ordained Rev. Michelle Dockery Boyer as the first female ever to be licensed as a Reverend at New Zion on May 15, 2004. Rev. As with the pastors before Dr. Davis, New Zion continued to grow in membership, Biblical teachings, sound doctrine, many building upgrades and additional property was purchased in the surrounding area of the church. Dr. Davis was the pastor of New Zion until he accepted the call as pastor in December 2011 in Newburg, NY. While seeking guidance from the Lord by prayer, supplication.and keeping our hand in God’s hand on calling its next pastor, New Zion praises God for its Associate Ministers who fed His people from 1996 to 1997, June 2004 to April 2005, August 2006 to November 2007 and December 22, 2011, to November 18, 2012. The church was incorporated on February 10, 1926. In 1929, Mrs. Georgia A. Holt came from Los Angeles, CA, to Ogden and reopened the Wall Avenue Church doors that had been closed for a time, and began a Sunday School. In August 1930, Mr. and Mrs. Neal came to Ogden and following active affiliation with the church, received consensus of its members to extend a call for the Wall Avenue Baptist Church’s first pastor. Reverend L.A. Platt of Ontario, CA, became the first Pastor of the Wall Avenue Baptist Church on October 2, 1930 and rendered faithful service for six years, Succeeding pastors from 1936 to the early 1960’s included Reverend J.L. Jones, 1937; Reverend Paxton, 1937-1940; Reverend Jessie L. Conner, 1942-1 948: Reverend J. L. Rollerson, 1948-1951; and Reverend B.J. Washington, 1 952- 1961. Under Reverend Washington’s leadership, the congregation increased and became in need of a new building. As a result, the Wall Avenue Baptist Church found its present location and became known as the New Zion Baptist Church. Ground breaking services were held on Sunday, May 16, 1954, and a dedication service was held on Sunday, October 26, 1958. This dedication service acquired the name of “Loyalty Day.” Each year on the fourth Sunday in October, New Zion observes this special dedication service, usually preceded by a Fall Revival and today, marks the 48" commemorative celebration of that most blessed occasion. There have been a number of dedicated pastors following Reverend Washington who have significantly contributed and served faithfully to sustain the godly light of New Zion Baptist Church in the Ogden community. Embarking on a new millennium, New Zion has faithfully declared to strengthen our resolve to continue, with the grace and glorious gospel of Jesus Christ is worthy example of Christian love, scriptural anchor to “Love ye one mercy of God, to be a church in which the boldly preached. We are also striving to be a unity and community in accordance with our | 4 another.” Lo the Reflections from our Committee Chairpersons ... Sister Joyce Frye & Deaconess Bertha Elliott Greetings to you, our brothers and who is the head of our lives. As we Revival & Loyalty Day Celebration, were led to the theme, “Blessed and sisters in Christ. We give honor to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ prayed for a special blessing upon our congregation for our 48" Fall the Holy Spirit touched our hearts and inspired our thoughts and we Highly Favored.” Our church, which was incorporated 80 years ago, has seen marvelous works and wonders manifested and delivered by the prayers of saints and hard work of many who have passed on, and thanks be to God, many of you are still here. We have experienced blessings to plentiful to count, such as licensing and ordaining ministers and deacons, and most importantly winning souls to Christ. We have had adversity which has _ allowed us to cherish the word of God and as a result, we have been able to practice forgiveness, love for one another, Christian unity, commitment, growth in grace, stewardship, Christian living and loyalty. We understand and know that a church family that prays together stays together. We consider it a privilege and great honor to be in the presence of believers and loyal servants of Jesus Christ, the most high King. Every Sunday and throughout the week, we marvel at the dedication and loyalty of the members of New Zion Baptist Church as they strive to continue to be good stewards for the Lord. When we think of the members of New Zion, we are reminded of the Apostle Paul — He stood stoned and left for dead, shipwrecked, beaten, bitten by a snake and finally imprisoned — all for Christ’s sake. When all was said and done, the Apostle Paul’s response was this: “Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with difficulties, for Christ’s sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong.” (2 Corinthians 12:10) Thank you for allowing us to serve as chairpersons for the 2006 Fall Revival and Loyalty Day Celebration. Michelle Dockery Boyer as the first female ever to be licensed as a Reverend at New Zion on May 15, 2004. Rev. Abrams was the Under Shepherd until his resignation on May 31, 2004, and he returned to Sacramento, CA. The Wall Avenue Baptist Church was organized in Ogden, Utah as a mission in 1916. The red brick bungalow style chapel with a small steeple erected in 1918 and dedicated in May 1919. This building was purchased by the Utah Baptist State Convention and seated 100 people and was located at 2701 Wall Avenue. At a meeting on December 23, 1925, it was decided to incorporate the organization for a period of 100 years. Bro. James E. Moore was chairman of this meeting, and the following officers were elected: Bro. O. H. Parry, President; Sis. Nellie Hamilton, Secretary; Sis. Florida Robinson, Vice-President; and Sis. Bernice Johnson, Treasurer. The Wall Avenue Baptist Church was the beacon of light in the community from 1918 to 1928. Clergymen of the Wall Avenue Baptist Church were until it’s closing were Rev. A. J. Billingsly, 1917-19; Rev. H. L. Marque, 1919-20; Rev. John W. Morris, 1920-21; Rev. M. A. Eilonth; 1921-23; Rev. T. L. Washington, 1923-25; Rev. James E. More, 1925-27; Rev. D. D. Banks, 1927-28. With the acceptance of the call, Rev. Derrel A. Hughes of Charlotte, NC, delivered his first Proclamation of the Word on Sunday, May 1, 2005. Rev. Hughes served as the Pastor until returning to North Carolina on July 31, 2006. At which time, New Zion extended the call as pastor to Rev. Dr. Bruce Davis, Sr., of Hattiesburg, MS. In 1929, Sis. Georgia Holt arrived in Ogden from Los Angeles, CA, reopened the Wall Avenue Baptist Church doors. She began a Sunday School with one quarter and the Bible. In August 1930, Bro. and Sis. Neal came to Ogden and became affiliated with the church. Upon a suggestion from the Neal’s, Wall Avenue Baptist Church extended a call to its first pastor, Rev. L. A. Platt. According to church archives, Rev. Platt preached his first sermon on October 9, 1930. He rendered faithful service until called to pastor at the Bethel Baptist Church in Pocatello, ID in 1936. Succeeding pastors were Rev. J. L. Jones, 1936-37; Rev. William Paxton, 1938-42; Rev. Jessie L. Conner; 1942-48: Rev. J. L. Rollerson, 1948-51 and Rev. Benjamin J. Lawrence Liggins of Texarkana, TX, accepted the call to pastor and preached his first sermon in May 1979. During the pastorate of Rev. Liggins, our aphorism “Love Ye One Another” [John 13:34] was adopted and in November 1979, New Zion witnessed it largest number of baptisms, to date, where 25 souls were saved. New Zion continued to witness God’s sovereignty and on September 27, 2012, New Zion extended the call to pastor to Rev. Carey E. McCall, Ill, M.Div., of Paterson, NJ. Rev. McCall accepted the tremendous calling and delivered the Word on Sunday, November 25, 2012. On March 29, 2014, Rev. McCall ordained as Deacon, Deacon Thomas M. White and ordained Min. Stanley L. As the membership outgrew the Wall Avenue Baptist Church, the second prayer was answered and the congregation was blessed to acquire property for the building of a new edifice located at 2935 Lincoln Avenue in Ogden, which it currently remains. The groundbreaking services were held on Sunday, May 16, 1954. The foundation was laid in November 1954 and the cornerstone was placed on October 31, 1955. This structure was dedicated on October 26, 1958. There were several proposed names for the new corstruction. The church approved the proposal submitted by the late Sis. Jimmie L. Bell for the church to ew Zion Missionary Baptist Church”. Thus, the Wall Avenue Baptist Church had a new name and be named “T became “The Churth Built by Faith.” Rev. Washington pastured New Zion until 1961. Many pastors stood in John’s shoes from Rev. Samuel C. Miller, 1962-64; Rev. Lacy K. Through God’s grace Reverend Elwood N. Stewart led New Zion through the COVID pandemic year of 2020-2021, holding the church’s first teleconference service in April 2020 having 40-55 participants and evolving it into virtual services through the Zoom application in the beginning of 2021. Although the virus church closed the building physically, New Zion never closed spiritually. Pastor Stewart with a prayerful mind and a reopening committee persevered through the safety challenges and New Zion physically reopened on May 2, 2021. Pastor Stewart has graciously and prayerfully served as New Zion’s Interim Pastor since August 1, 2018, to present day and we continue to thrive in our 95 years. — Praise God! Smauldon Dr. Donald Carpenter Chr. Trustees Picture Not Available rivet. K. Dabney - Sexton Available records indicate that in 1918, the Utah State Convention purchased a lot on Wall Avenue in Ogden. The Wall Avenue Church was built and incorporated. Rev. L.A. Platt became the first called pastor on Oct. 5, 1930. On April 8, 1954, Rev. B.J. Washington as called to pastor. Under his leadership a larger building was needed. Ground breaking service was held on May 16, 1954. Laying of the foundation began November 1954 and the Cornerstone was laid in October 1955. The congregation marched from the Wall Avenue Church to the new building and the first services were held March 25, 1956. Dedication service was Oct. 26, 1958. New Zion was chosen as the name for the edifice; church anniversary service is celebrated on Palm Sunday. The 4th Sunday in October celebrates the dedication service as Loyalty Day Service. Extensive remodeling has been done on the interior and stained glass windows were added over the baptismal pool. Rev. J. Adams left the church in June 2004. Rev. D. Hughes was at New Zion for 16 months. After a long and prayer filled search, the Rev. Dr. Bruce Davis, Sr. accepted the call in November 2007. We are seeing membership growth, increased attendance and reactivation of church ministries, especially in the Youth Dept. New Zion, the Church build by Faith, continues to be a beacon to those in search of Christ. Pastor Davis leads us in song, "..We've Gotta feelin, Everything is Gonna be alright..." B. Davis, Sr. and his Associate pastors. We have seen reactivation of many of the youth ministries; growth in attendance at Bible study; Spirit filled Sunday worship Services; the ongoing of special church activities and functions, i.e. VBS, Sunday school, the Back-to-School Fellowship for the youth to help prepare them for school; the special days (Usher, Men and Women, Palm Sunday and others); the growth within the Christian Education Department; the activation of the Historical Ministry and the continued honoring of those members who have belonged to NZBC for 50 years or more. This year saw 26 more names added to that list. To paraphrase our Senior Pastor: There is a dash between the year born and the year died; the dash in between is what people talk about and signifies what you did in between those years. Spend that time walking in Faith. Show the love of Christ in you each and every day, for only what you do for Christ will last. It has been sou! stirring and spirit lifting to be a part of the service and to share here at New Zion. May God continue to bless us, to guide and lead us in a manner that is pleasing to Him.
