Ashton Storytelling Award Bob Wood lf you asked Bob about when his love for stories surfaced, he will admit that it started when he was a young child. He loved the stories that his mother read and the songs that she sung to him almost every day. It was one of the joys of his childhood. Bob Wood He has been telling stories for a long time. He used stories to explain his early behavior as a boy ona farm, as a school teacher to entertain the thirty “cherubs,” and to convince his would-be wife that underneath his frog-like appearance there really was a captive prince. Twelve years ago he donned a “Cat in the Hat” costume to read and | 4 few stories on Dr. Seuss's Birthday. Somebody let the cat out of the bag (so to speak) and he has on roaming Weber School District, in his role as Student Services Director, doing “drive-by-readings” in any of the schools ever since. b has been involved with the Storytelling Festival in some way since its inception. When the festival san, he was a principal at an elementary school. They conducted mini-festivals in the school and lected representatives from each grade and then from the school to perform at the Storytelling Festival. 5 was on the Storytelling Committee for four years and helped coordinate the participation and andance of the students in Weber School District. He continues to enjoy the festival and participates a storyteller or as an emcee. 9 Phyllis Dixon Shaw Anneliese Konkol Steven R. Mecham Bill Higley 100 Dean W. Hurst O2 Milan E. Welcome to the 15“ Annual Weber State University Storytelling Festival Fifteen years ago, who would have thought that a field full of tents on a rainy weekend would turn into a bustling annual festival with nearly 50 separate events across three counties for listeners from pre-school to senior citizens? Who could have imagined, that inthat time, 40 nationally celebrated tellers would bring their story gifts to our community, or that 140 storytellers from around here would leave us spell bound? Who could have guessed that close to 1000 school children would stand on the same stages as practiced professionals to weave their tales and that thousands more would have told their stories in their schools, to their grandmas and grandpas and anyone else who would — listen? Some of those children are now bringing their | own children to the festival. And what a storytelling festival it is! The excitement mounts, the crowds hush, and we are caught up in “Once upon atime...” all over again. We fly away to National Tellers 2011 - Williams Tell Willy Claflin is well loved by story listeners at the Weber State University Storytelling Festival. He was born before television. The only child of shy eccentric parents, he grew up in the woods of New Hampshire where he spent his childhood day dreaming and impersonating wild life. _ In boarding school, he found out he was funny. All grown up, next he went to Harvard where his imagination did not abandon him. He became a folk singer, Then he had to get a job so he taught school, where he found out . kids love learning from puppets—and he got to sing. Eventually he was hijacked by a troupe of hand puppets, including one alien life form. A full time performer and writer for the last 25 years, Willy is a now a most storyteller, mostly for adults, but his kid fans are still really important. _ Bill Harley is onee of the Weber State University Slorvielling Festival’ 5all[ time favorite tellers.
