Packer Center for Family and Community Education (Packer Center). An entity of the Moyes College of Education, the Packer Center provides administrative services for a variety of community-centered nitiatives that draw upon faculty, staff, students and community members from a variety of disciplines. While the Festival continues to be directed by faculty in the Department of Teacher Education with the help of a dedicated committee of campus and community volunteers, all financial matters (e.g., sponsors, venues, contracts) are coordinated through the Packer Center The mission of the Packer Center, as with the WSU Storytelling Festival, is to enhance the ives of individuals and families, enrich communities and promote nurturing environments though campus and educational outreach offerings. Those storytellers, and the many who have come before them, have created an outstand ng legacy of educating ch Idren through their tales. Ashton Storytelling Award Ann L. Ellis Since its inception about 20 years ago, the Weber State University Storytel ing Festival has become a major cultura and social event in Northern Utah. Every year thousands of people ofa ages gather in late February to share and enjoy the art of storytelling. The Festival's outreach extends from toddlers to senior citizens. Its programs are designed to enhance the activities of the University and sponsoring school districts. This award-winning Festiva is nationa ly recognized for its emphasis on youth storytellers who perform their stories on stage with practicing professionals. For Ann Ellis, who was invited to sit on the executive committee of the emerging Festival n 1995, the inclusion of children as tellers has been the most gratifying aspect of her storytelling work. Over the years, an estimated 1200 extraordinary students from loca schools have told their stories at the Festival along with renowned national and Ann L. Ellis talented local storytellers. Ann has served on the executive committee since the beginning of the Festival and was its chair for the past eight years. Under her guidance, the Festival has flourished and she helped ensure its perpetuity as it became part of the Boyd K. and Donna S. Packer Center for Family and Community Education. She expresses her gratitude to the hundreds of volunteers, steering committee members, and especia ly sponsors who have nurtured the Festival through the years. More than twenty years ago, Karen J Ashton envisioned a renewa of the ancient art of storytel ng and established the Timpanogos Storytel ng Festival, one of the most widely recognized festivals nthe country Karen is wel respected nthe world of professiona storytel ng as one who nurtures the storyteller and his or her art. She learned her craft sitting knee-to-knee with elders in her Affrilachian (African-American/ Native American/ — Appalachian) family.
