Some say that if weather permits one to see the sun rise on Easter, one will be able to see it "shout"! Easter is a Christian festival that celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is the most important holy day of the Christian religion. In most countries, Easter comes in early spring, and most Christians observe Easter on a Sunday between March 22 and April 25. The story of Easter comes from the Bible. The Gospels tell that the body of Jesus disappeared from His tomb on the third day after His crucifixion. An angel appeared to His followers and announced "He is risen." Easter may have obtained its name from Eostre, a Teutonic goddess of Spring, or from the Teutonic festival of spring called Eostur. Some Easter Symbols The Cross. Represents the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. It has special meaning to Christians as a symbol or Christ’s victory over death. The Lamb. This symbol comes from the Jewish Pesah or Passover. Early Christians interpreted the sacrifice of the paschal lamb as a forecast of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. They spoke of Jesus as "the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world" (John 1:29). Eggs. Eggs represent the new life that returns to nature about Easter time. The custom of exchanging eggs began in ancient times. Early Christians of Mesopotamia were the first to use colored eggs for Easter. Children of today often have chocolate and candy filled (jelly bean) eggs to go along with colored eggs. Rabbits. Some children believe that an Easter bunny brings their Easter eggs. This belief probably comes from an old German folk tale. But rabbits have been a symbol of birth and new life for many thousands of years. As such, they are symbols celebration of the new life Easter represents. of the From The Pastor’s Desk PURURRORURRERRUORORURRUOROOREUOREORUORUORURDORUORURRERD 16, 1995 April ‘And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. THE SUNDAY SCHOOL April 16, 1995 Lesson Subject: Lesson Scripture: Times: "Being A Resurrection People" Luke 24:1-11; I Corinthians 15:12-17, 56-58 A.D. 30; AD 55 Golden Text: Places: Jerusalem; From Ephesus "Be ye steadfast, unmovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord" (I Cor. 15:58). Today’s Aim Facts: many issues. to know that Christians hold different opinions on Principle: to understand how the concept of knowledge combined with love can help believers maintain unity. Application: to encourage the students to be wise and to accept one another in love in the midst of their differences. Some Practical Points: 1. The basic message that we proclaim to the world is that Jesus Christ died for our sins on the cross of Calvary and then rose from the grave. To deny Christ’s resurrection undermines our evangelistic witness and the whole vocation of preaching. 2. No matter how depressing the reality of sin and death may seem, for the Christian there is great joy in our knowledge of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
