Sometime later the church was built by the congregation. In September 1927 there were only seven members. In 1929 the late Mrs. Georgia A. Holt came to Ogden from Los Angeles, California, the church having been closed for some time she had the doors opened and started a Sunday School with only one quarterly and the Bible. In August 1930 a Mr. and Mrs. Neal came to Ogden, the church was still without a pastor, but upon their suggestion The Rev. L. A. Platt of Ontario, California was called, preaching his first sermon on October 5, 1930. Rev. Platt served faithfully along with his dear wife, Mrs. L. A. Platt until called to the Bethel Baptist Church, Pocatello, Idaho in 1936. (Mrs. Platt after the death of Rev. Platt returned to Ogden and reunited with the church.) Pastors who served from 1936 to 1952: Rev. J.L. Jones, 1937. Rev. Paxton from 1938 to 1940. From 1940 to 1942 the church had a hard struggle keeping its doors open. In 1942 Rev. Jessie L. Conner of Okmulgee, Oklahoma was called as pastor serving until March 1948. In 1948 the church had 100 members. In the summer 1948 the Rev. J.L. Rollerson of Denver, Colorado was called as pastor and served well until called home by death on Sunday afternoon of December 12, 1951, after having preached the 11 o’clock sermon. At the death of Rev. Rollerson there were one hundred and forty-three (143) members. The Church Marches On. On April 8, 1952, God laid upon our hearts and minds to extend a call to the Rev. Benjamin J. Washington, and on May 1, 1952, he preached his first sermon as pastor. Upon accepting the pastorate of the church, Rev. Washington suggested that the church do two things: purchase a new parsonage and make immediate plans to build a new church. On July 5, 1952, a parsonage was purchased and furnished at a cost of $8,000. And on February 15, 1954, a new parsonage was purchased including two lots, upon which the New Zion Baptist church now stands. Cost of the lots and parsonage was $9,850. Groundbreaking services were held Sunday, May 16, 1954, and the New Church was on the way. A contribution of $100 was made by Mr. Obie Blackmore, an usher, to have the basement dug (our fellowship hall), since at the time of the Groundbreaking the church had less than $100 in the bank. The cornerstone was laid Sunday, October 31, 1955, three years later October 26, 1958, it was dedicated to the services of God, debt-free. For the next five years the church raised an average of $20,000 per year, with approximately $82,000 going to the construction of the new Church. More than 50,000 hours of free labor was donated by members and friends, and Airmen from nearby Hill Air Force Base. During the construction meals were served daily by the members and friends, and many clubs. For several weeks the women of the church came daily to give their services by pulling nails, etc., many helped to put down the floor, and some even helped to put the roof on the top. To sum it up briefly, everybody worked to make possible this beautiful edifice. There are 50,000 bricks and blocks in the building, most of which were donated by members and friends, business firms and friends from Wyoming and Colorado. A sizable donation was given by the Western States Baptist Convention. With less than $100 in the bank when we started, and only 143 members, is why we say that this is the church that was “Built by Faith”. The church was built with 17 rooms, with an auditorium both upstairs and down. Witha seating capacity in the main auditorium of 500. Over the years the church has had many updates and changes. The latest one was in the year 2020 with renovations being done to the fellowship hall and flooring. This was done through the continued dedication of its giving members. The end is not yet, there are higher heights yet to be attained. Respectfully Retyped, Sister Tricia Frye-Broadnax Secretary/Clerk-2020 Special Acknowledgments In appreciation... ..We continually remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ. - 1 Thessalonians 1:3 We appreciate and Thank You for your help and service during our 67*" Fall Revival & Loyalty Day Celebration.
