INTERRELATIONSHIP OF THE FIRST THREE GOSPELS | So far we have given specific attention only to the Gospel of Mark. When we broaden our perspective to include all of the first three Gospels the complexities which we have encountered in trying to understand the nature of Mark’s Gospel are compounded. A comparative reading of the first three Gospels reveals both striking similarities and sharp differences. Why Write a Gospel? The Gospel of Mark A. Literary Dependency Students of the Bible have been aware of the extensive similarities in the Synoptic Gospels for a long time. Throughout the centuries of the church’s life most Christians explained this phenomenon in what was for them the only conceivable way. The first three Gospels were similar because, in the providence of God, they had roots which extended back independently to a common apostolic witness. A few early scholars such as Augustine (who died in 430 C.E.) thought that the Gospels might be interdependent. But most Christians accounted for their similarities by assuming they all drew on the same information. Vestiges of that ancient explanation still appear occasionally in, for example, suggestions of an ancient lost (oral?) apostolic Gospel which served as the source for the independent composition of the canonical Gospels. Most scholars today support a different solution to the question of similarities between the Gospels. They are convinced that there is a direct literary dependency between the first three Gospels. On the basis of that conviction they struggle with the challenge to describe the complicated literary interrelationship of the Synoptic Gospels in such a way as to account for both the differences and the similarities. That challenge has come to be called “the synoptic problem.” In the history of modern biblical scholarship it was first posed in the latter part of the eighteenth century. The criteria which scholars of literature have defined as supporting some assumption of literary dependency include: 1) telling the same story (common subject matter) 2) telling the story in the same order (correspondence of sequence and continuity of events) 3) telling the story in the same way (similar sentence and word order) 4) telling the story with the same words (extensive vocabulary agreement, use of the same harsh grammatical constructions or unusual words) When these criteria are applied to the Gospels they produce persuasive results. It is obvious that the first three Gospels tell the same story. The statistics for the common subject matter indicate that of THE SYNOPTIC GOSPELS Why Write a Gospel? ALLEN FOURTH ANNUAL AWARDS BANQUET SATURDAY, JULY 13, 1996 - 6:30 PM Theme: "Laymen Striving To Be Upright Men" Psalm 1 Mansion House Dining Room 2350 Adams Avenue, Ogden, Utah Speaker: Reverend William S. Beard, Pastor Bethel Baptist Church, Pocatello, Idaho Menu Fruit Cup - Tossed Green Salad Roast Beef or Baked Chicken Baked Potato - Mixed Green Vegetables Rolls or Dilly Bread - Coffee, Milk, Soft Drinks Fruit Pies, Sherbet kuwweee Lae eres Lift Every Voice And Sing Lift every voice and sing, till earth and heaven ring, Ring with the harmonies of liberty; Let our rejoicing rise, high as the listening skies, Let it resound loud as the rolling sea. Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us, Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us, Facing the rising sun of our new day begun, Let us march on till victory is won. Stony the road we trod, bitter the chastening rod, Felt in the days when hope unborn had died; Yet with a steady beat, have not our weary feet, Come to the place for which our fathers Sighed: We have come over a way that with tears has been watered, We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered Out from the gloomy past till now we stand at last Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast. God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, Thou who hast brought us thus far on the way; Thou who hast by Thy might, led us into the light, Keep us forever in the path, we pray. Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee, Lest our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee, Shadowed beneath Thy hand, may we forever stand, True to our God, true to our native land. Members of New Zion Baptist Church in Ogden donated 40 backpacks loaded with school supplies and 25 pencil boxes to innercity students during its annual backto-school celebration last Saturday. In addition, Wasatch Church of Christ in Clearfield gave away thousands of free clothing items to children. The event at New Zion Baptist Church provided children with school supplies and variety of free. activities, including carnival games and face painting, and also hamburgers and hot dogs, said Emma Swain Brown, a church member who helped organize the celebration. School supplies were donated by the congregation and also purchased with funds from the Swanson Foundation. In addition, Wal-Mart, McDonalds and Macey’s Food and Drug donated gift cards used to buy food, prizes and other items. New Zion Baptist Church members enjoy participating in the back-to-school program because they care deeply about children, said Minister Lillie Holman. “It’s really a blessing to give back to our community,” she said. Ruby Zamora, an 11-year-old from Ogden, said she enjoyed the backto-school celebration because of the wide variety of activities. “You can do everything,” Zamora said as she carefully colored a picture while seated at a table in the church’s parking lot. The free clothing giveaway at the Wasatch Church of Christ was also a major success with items being provided to 105 families, said Ron White, the church’s minister. About 60 people lined up before the event started and several thousand items were handed out in three hours, White said, adding church members enjoy participating in the annual clothing drive. “It’s quite a happy time for us,” he said. “We are not trying to toot our own horn. We are trying to help others.” Sister Delores Hill (above, left) sets out school suppies on a prize table as Lucia Zamora, 9, looks them over during a back-to-school event at the New Zion Baptist Church in Ogden.
