This lesson shows us that God does not play favorites. Punishment follows unconfessed sin, and punishment is always painful. The fall of Jerusalem also consequences of ignoring God’s warnings through the pleas of His prophets. 2. shows the terrible that had been given Lesson Aim: Facts: to emphasize that sin has an awful payday. Principle: to understand that God keeps His word - even when that word means divine judgment. Application: to encourage us to avoid the attitude that results in divine punishment. 3. rebellious | Although what is reported in II Kings 24b-25:3 looms as a personal tragedy, the spiritual message is that Judah as a nation is now beginning to pay a terrible price for her sinful and rebellious ways, which had continued over many generations. | 4. God always keeps his promises, whether they are promises of : blessings or promises of judgment, as in this case. | 5. Satan paints a glorious picture of sin; however, all sin has consequences consequences 6. and sin always results in_ disaster. are disaster, destruction, and death. Attempting to escape the consequences Its (vv 8-12) of sin is futile. | Zedekiah and his troops tried to escape from the besieged city under the cover of night. However, they were overtaken, Zedekiah’s sons were killed, afterwhich his eyes were put out and he was carried away into Babylon in chains - a dismal journey of nearly a thousand miles. The last sight that Zedekiah would remember for the rest of his days was the violent death of his sons. Today, with increasing frequency, we behavior in those who neither honor God creation. see such beastly nor respect His 7. True to God’s word, the Babylonians destroyed the city of Jerusalem, the temple, and the walls of the city. By such drastic measures, the Babylonians sought to insure that the city of Jerusalem would never again rebel against their authority. _ Age Group Emphasis: Children: Children need God’s bringing judgment. to be led to consider the reasons for They need to know that although God ‘is patient and kind, He will punish those who continue to rebel against Him. They need to know that God loves them, however, and desires their obedience rather than their punishment. Youths: Young people would benefit from hearing from an older person who has experienced divine punishment for disobeying the Lord. Many, many Biblical passages also deal with one’s punishment for disobedience. Adults: Adults should consider what it means to experience God’s discipline. Satan wants us to believe that sin opens the door to joy, happiness, success, and beauty. The truth is that sin brings misery, destruction, and ultimately death. Jeremiah | —' About 585 BC | | Jerusalem Today’s Aim: Facts: sin to recognize that persistent and unconfessed results in pain, suffering, and heartache. Principle: to teach punitive and corrective. that divine punishment | both | is | Application: to help us respond to divine correction with | humility and repentance. Practical Points 1. The surviving citizens of Jerusalem felt after the Babylonian | conquest that "we are oppressed, and no one comes to deliver us." | Their predicament was their own fault, but that did not make it any less painful. It also did not make the feeling of having been = abandoned by God any less real. 2. Divine abandoned ee discipline might cause us to think that God has God will not abandon us; his discipline is us. twofold: to punish and correct. He disciplines those He loves (Hebrew 12:5-11), and in the midst of His judgment, He offers | ie the hope of repentance and restoration (Jeremiah 33:4-8). 3. Divine judgment will do one of two things: people to their senses harden them in their hardens concrete. (as it did The sin. either it will bring the prodigal son), or same sun that melts it will butter 4. Sin mars and disfigures restore and recreate. 5.. The people of deserved. mercy. God’s creation and only God can Judah were suffering, and their punishment was In the midst of their suffering, they asked God ; for 6. We must be willing to yield to God’s correction when it comes. The proper response to correction is humility, repentance, and a plea for restoration. 7. Although God had turned away from the people of Judah because of their sin, he did not abandon them - that was their great hope. Despite their sinful past, God would restore them if they returned to him. There is no hope except in the Lord. Thus, our grief should turn us toward God, not away from. 8. People must first accept full responsibility for their sins. After this has been done, a plea can be made to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, that He forgive us, and restore us to His good graces. 9. Helplessness, fear and pain are the wages of sin (Lam 5:8-10). 10. Jeremiah prayed for mercy for his people. At the end of his prayer he asked, "Are you angry with us still?" God would not stay angry with them forever - as it says in Micah 7:18, "You cannot stay angry with your people for you love to be merciful." Join us next week in the Sunday School at 9:30. Source: Following Jesus In The Real World_ by Richard Lamb "IF my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear form heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land." IT Chronicles 7:14 THE SUNDAY SCHOOL August 25, 1996 Lesson Subject: Worshiping God Lesson Scripture: Psalm 96:1-13 Time: Unknown Place: Palestine Golden Text: "Sing unto the Lord, bless his name; shew forth his salvation from day to day" (Psalm 96:2). Genuine Worship 1. Genuine worship is an encounter with God. A person who truly worships God will be affected by it. 2. Worship is not a mere performance. It is adoration inspired by God’s character and enabled by God’s Spirit. Worship not only expresses but also completes the enjoyment of God and His blessings. 3. Worship allows us to focus on God, and this is what transforms our lives. It also delivers us from the deceitful thought that anything or anyone other than God is worthy of our ultimate trust, attention, and adoration. Worship produces humility, for it takes our attention off ourselves. It is for this reason that worship enhances unity. How 1. 2. Do You Approach God in Worship? Do you give yourself to Him in utmost devotion? Do you come with a humble attitude, ready to commune with Him? 3. Do you cultivate a public atmosphere that is conducive to meeting with a holy God? 4. Do you approach Him with reverence, realizing that only in Christ do you have access to Him? Keep these questions before you to guide you in proper worship. True worship is the focus of Psalm 96. This psalm is given completely to extolling (praising/glorifying) the Lord, the God of the whole earth. Place: Jerusalem Golden Text: Josiah made a covenant before the Lord, to walk after the Lord, and to keep his commandments and...to perform the words of this covenant that were written in this book. And all the people stood to the covenant: (II Kings 23:3). Introduction: The world wants to get rid of God’s Word. It tries to do so by ridiculing and discrediting it. The people of Judah had lost the Word as a result of aggressive persecution. In our day, we can lose it through passive neglect. Practical Points | 1. God’s people should give the utmost respect and attention to ; His Word (II Kings 23:1-2). 2. A godly man will not be satisfied simply with hearing God’s Word; he will earnestly endeavor to obey it as well (II Kings 23:3; James 1:22-25). 3. Our worship of God must be pure - free of any idolatry or worldliness (II Kings 23:4). 4. When people turn away from the true God, they begin to worship the very things that God has created (vs. 5). _ 5S. We should give no quarter (merciful consideration) to evil; it must be thoroughly crushed (vs. 6). 6. A consistent partner of false religion is immorality (II Kings 23:7; Romans 1:23-24). 7. All manner of external reform does not guarantee that hearts will be changed (II Kings 23:8-9). 8. Choosing to obey the Lord is a personal decision, but it is a decision that can be influenced by others. Think about the people that you influence - are you following Josiah’s example by promising to obey God, or are you a negative influence on others? OUR THINKING VS. GOD'S PROMISES "ITS IMPOSSIBLE" "ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE" Luke 18:27 "I CAN’T GO ON" "MY GRACE IS SUFFICIENT" "I CAN’T FIGURE IIT Corinthians 12:9 THINGS OUT" "T WILL DIRECT "I'M NOT ABLE" "ITS NOT YOUR STEPS" Proverbs 20:24 "TAM ABLE" II Corinthians 9:8 WORTH IT" "NOBODY LOVES | ME" "IT WILL BE WORTH IT" Romans 8:28 | "T LOVE YOU" John 3:16 Obedience to God is a two-step process. First we learn what God requires by studying His Word; then we respond to that knowledge with active obedience. Are you satisfied with your current level of Bible knowledge? Are you satisfied with your current level of obedience to what you already know? If you are not satisfied, what are you willing to do during the week to improve? Each member should have your own personal letter from me by the end of the week. We have a few outdated addresses, however, so if you do not receive a letter this week please call the secretary and give her your new mailing address. At any rate, I pray that you will accept this today as your very own. All visitors are welcome and are invited to join us in this process. To kick off our Loyalty Month, I am asking that we have a fellowship luncheon following the morning worship service on the First Sunday, October 6, 1996. The Angels of Praise and Youth are asked to be in charge and I’m sure they would like you to bring your favorite dish whether it be bread, meat, dessert, salad, or vegetable. Come and enjoy the Christian fellowship. That’s next Sunday following morning worship service. Sister Dula Brock is chairperson for our Loyalty Revival and Loyalty Day services. Please cooperate with her. Our evangelist will be the Rev. Willie Davis, Pastor of Second Baptist Church, Las Vegas, Nevada, formerly pastor of this church. Sister Brock has begun an outline for the week and if you would like to help in any way, please complete the form on the next page and pass it on to her. I believe that if we humble ourselves and pray, turn from our wicked ways and seek God’s face, then will He heal our land. I ask you to join me in a month of healing, recommitment, and fellowship...and then let’s just keep it up because its just good to be at peace with one another, especially those of the household of faith.
