Abstract This thesis presents an analysis of the impact of image quality (based on peer-provided ratings) when choosing between similar recipes compared to the rating of said recipes. Image quality data was first gathered through two surveys rating images of food. That data was then used to generate a survey with sixteen comparisons of similar recipes where the image associated with each recipe was randomly selected to be a higher- or lower-quality image, and the rating associated with each recipe was randomly selected to be in the 2-, 3-, or 4-star range (out of 5 stars). Enough data was gathered to have at least two responses for every permutation of each comparison.; ; Statistical analysis of the gathered data indicates that gender did not have a significant impact regarding the preference of image quality, rating, or the time taken to decide. Age appeared to have impacted all three of those categories, with younger participants more strongly preferring high-quality images, high-rated recipes, and taking less time to decide. Older participants took longer to decide, picked more low-quality images than other age brackets, and placed less value on rating.; ; Comparing a higher-quality image and lower rated recipe to a recipe with a lower-quality image and a higher rating, each was chosen about half the time. A strong image can clearly contribute to a lower-rated recipe being chosen, but individual preferences, such as personal preference for certain ingredients, subjective opinion about image quality, and value placed on star rating all have significant impact.
