We were taught nurses never diagnosed in those days. One night I called up the intern. I said, Mr. Brown. They had a little phrase that we were supposed to say so that we werent diagnosing. His respirations have ceased. Well, I had woke him up in the middle of the night, and he said, What? What did you say? His respirations have apparently ceased. That was the line I was taught. He said, What are you trying to tell me? Hes dead. I couldnt stand it a third time. A nurse could not say a patient was dead she had to tell him he needed to come, and then he came over and pronounced him dead, and then went back.-Janice Grace Hassell, Class of 1958 |
| Description |
The St. Benedicts School of Nursing was founded in 1947 by the Sisters of Mount Benedict. The school operated from April 1947 to 1968. Over that forty-one year period, the school had 605 students and 357 graduates. In 1966, the program became the basis for Weber State Colleges Practical Nurse Program and eventually merged into Webers Nursing Program. This oral history project was created to capture the memories of the graduates and to add to the history of nursing education in Ogden. The interviews focus on their training, religion, and experiences working with doctors, nurses, nuns, and patients at St. Benedicts Hospital. This project received funding from the Utah Humanities Council and the Utah State History. |
