031_POW Camp Dances

Title 031_POW Camp Dances
Description A collection of photographs and oral history quotes that document the history of the Prisoner of War camp at Defense Depot Ogden that opened in 1943 and closed in 1946. The oral histories were conducted with widows of German and Italian POWs, former guards, and community members that worked with the POWs.
Image Captions Concerning the Thursday night dances at the St. Joseph Hospitality House, their greatest desire is more American girls to dance with. At first the average was 25 girls to 100 men. The Italian Service Unit orchestra furnishes the music for about 100 Italians for dancing each Thursday night. At present there are about enough American girls to furnish partners for the men. - Chaplain Raphael Monteleone, Lt. 9 January 1945.
