030_POW Camp Construction of Ski Runway

Title 030_POW Camp Construction of Ski Runway
Description A collection of photographs and oral history quotes that document the history of the Prisoner of War camp at Defense Depot Ogden that opened in 1943 and closed in 1946. The oral histories were conducted with widows of German and Italian POWs, former guards, and community members that worked with the POWs.
Image Captions One project assigned the prisoners of war was the construction of a ski runway and lift at Snow Basin in Ogden Canyon to be used in the rehabilitation program for convalescent soldiers at Bushnell Hospital. Mr. Alf Engen, a depot employee and a world-renowned skier was asked to assist in teaching the Bushnell patients in the Advanced Reconditioning Program on week-ends and off duty hours. Twenty five prisoners of war were assigned this work. Full use of the mechanical ski tows and winter sports in general were offered the enlisted men and women of this area without charge. Classes were run in which the amputation cases were given special training in this sport. The amputees derived many benefits from this type of training. It helped them to develop coordination, agility and balance with very little chance of injury. It also proved to them that their physical disabilities were not going to keep them from enjoying life and in this way aided their morale.
