Depart to Serve” Having been led, as we believe, by the Spirit of God, to receive the Lord Jesus Christ as our Savior, And on the profession of our faith, having been baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, We do now, in the presence of God, angels, and this assembly, most solemnly and joyfully enter into covenant with one another, as one body in Christ. We engage, therefore, by the aid of the Holy Spirit, to walk together in Christian love, to strive for the advancement of this church, in knowledge, holiness and comfort; to promote its prosperity and spirituality; to sustain to worship, ordinances, discipline and doctrine: To contribute cheerfully and regularly to the support of the ministry, the expenses of the church, the relief of the poor, and the spread of the gospel through all nations. We also engage to maintain family and secret devotions; to religiously educate our children; to seek the salvation of our kindred and acquaintances; to walk circumspectly in the world; to be just in our dealings, faithful in our engagements and exemplary in our deportment; To avoid all tattling, backbiting and excessive anger. To abstain from the sale and use of intoxicating drinks as a beverage, and to be zealous in our efforts to advance the kingdom of our Savior. We further engage to watch over one another in brotherly love; To remember each other in prayer; to aid each other in sickness and distress; to cultivate Christian sympathy in feeling and courtesy in speech; To be slow to take offense, but always ready for reconciliation, and mindful of the rule of our Savior to secure it without delay. (All Together) We moreover engage that when we remove from this place, we will, as soon as possible, unite with some other church, where we can carry out the spirit of this covenant and the principles of God’s Word. VERSE 1: What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear; What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer. O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear; all because we do not carry everything to God in prayer. VERSE 2: Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere? We should never be discouraged, take it to the Lord in prayer. Can we find a friend so faithful, who will all our sorrows share? Jesus knows our every weakness, take it to the Lord in prayer. VERSE 3: Are we weak and heavy laden, cumbered with a load of care? Precious Savior, still our refuge, take it to the Lord in prayer. Do thy friends despise, forsake thee? Take it to the Lord in prayer; In His arms He’ll take and shield thee, thou wilt find a solace there. Thought for the Day! I During your happy moments ....praise God. During your difficult moments ....seek God. During your quiet moments ....worship God. During your painful moments ....trust God. What image will you compare Him to? As for an idol, a craftsman casts it, and a goldsmith overlays it with gold and fashions silver chains for it. Do you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood since the earth was founded? He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers. He stretches out the heavens like a canopy, and spreads them out like a tent to live in. He brings princes to naught and reduces the rulers of this world to nothing. No sooner are they planted, no sooner are they sown, no sooner do they take root in the ground, than He blows on them and they wither, and a whirlwind sweeps them away like chaff. “To whom will you compare Me? Or who is My equal?” says the Holy One. Lift your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one, and calls them each by name. Because of His great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing. Why do you say, O Jacob, and complain, O Israel, “My way is hidden from the Lord; my cause is disregarded by my God?” Do you not know? Have you not heard? Let us remind ourselves that is takes a whole village to raise a child to compassion, competence, and character. We celebrate their gifts and strengths. We pray for them. Lord, help us to hear the dreams and concems of children, and to never give up on them. We thank you for David, who found favor with you and was anointed king in his youth. We also thank you for Josiah who became king at eight years of age, and whose reign was pleasing to you. We thank you for the young maiden who instructed Naaman to see the prophet. We also thank you for Miriam who led with her brother Moses, for Jeremiah who was called from his mother's womb, and for Jesus who confounded the chief priests and scribes at the age of twelve. As the lives of children and youth are. channeled to schooling and career preparation, help them find the time to read and to understand your commandments, to know and to love Jesus Christ, and to be witnesses of your saving grace to their own generation. O Lord, position significant and caring adults in their lives to guide our children to discover the unique potential which you have placed within each of them. Shield them from all hurt, harm and danger. Shelter them from abuse, low self-esteem, drugs, pornography, prostitution, and poverty. May you help them to stay in school, to obey their parents, and to resist negative peer pressure. Give them important roles to play in the home, church, school, and community. This is my commandment, that you love one another as | have loved you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friend. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. lf | speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not love, | am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if | have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if | have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, | am nothing. lf | give away all my possessions, and if | hand over my body so that | may boast, but do not have love, | gain nothing. Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; It is not irritable or resenttul. It does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. (All Together) Love never ends. And not faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love. “We Shall Overcome” VERSE 1: We shall overcome, we shall overcome, we shall overcome some day. Reverend Elwood N. Stewart Reverend Elwood N. Stewart is a native of Peoria, Illinois, where he was baptized at Zion Baptist Church. He is the eldest of six children born to Henry and Mary Stewart. His family moved to Long Beach, California, in 1962, where he graduated from Long Beach Polytechnic High School and Long Beach City College. He came to Salt Lake City to attend the University of Utah on a football scholarship. He also attended California State University at Long Beach and graduated from Westminster College, Salt Lake City, Utah, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Studies. He will be attending Salt Lake Theological Seminary in the fall of 2007 working toward a Masters Degree in Theological Studies. Reverend Stewart served as a Deacon at New Zion Baptist Church in Ogden, Utah, for four years. While carrying out these duties, he answered the call into the ministry and was licensed to preach the Gospel in October, 1994. He was ordained by the IGBC in January 1997. Reverend Stewart served as Pastor of the Wings of Grace Baptist Church in Layton, Utah, and presently serves on the ministerial staff at Calvary Baptist Church in Salt Lake City, Utah, under the guidance of Pastor Dr. France A. Davis. Reverend Stewart is married to Verlira “Kitty” Stewart. The Lord has blessed them with three sons: Shay, Travis and Karlos. They are the proud grandparents of Diogenese, Devery, Shelby, Alivia, Jessie, Taelor and Kaia. ue Ca The Word of God reveals to us in Psalm 84:10 that, “For a day in Thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.” We, here at New Zion Baptist Church, have been blessed of God to have an Ushers Ministry that graciously serves and reflects the following ... U = Unwavering in their commitment to serve the Lord as they labor here in the vineyard at New Zion. Seeking always to grow daily in their walk with God for they are fully persuaded that it is impossible to express and share the love of God without spending quality time with God. S = H = Having a heart for God’s people, they are continually aware that the value and blessing of a smile, a friendly “hello and glad to see you” can be just what a worshiper needs to prepare their spirits to hear from God. Et = Enthusiastically and patiently assisting each worshiper to their seat in the sanctuary knowing that to come into the presence of the Lord can strengthen, restore and anchor them for what lies ahead as they depart to face vicissitudes of life outside the walls of the church. R = Ready and willing to serve to meet the needs the of each worshiper, as modeled by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, confident that to do so with “Love, Unity and Humility” is not only pleasing to God but has great reward now and in eternity. We say “thank you” Lord for our Usher Ministry. Their sounds echo and penetrate time to remind us of our foreparents who were brutally captured and forcibly enslaved, as they left the peaceful womb of their African homeland. ‘Stony the road we trod.” Oh God, You have seen the millions of dark bodies buried beneath the tumultuous waves of the deep. Bodies of African men and women who held the seeds of greatness. You have seen women’s dreams for a united family vanish as they were Sold at auction blocks. You have seen the legacy of the African American family decimated and demeaned by those who have attempted to control our destiny. ‘Bitter the chastening rod, felt in the days when hope unborn had died.” Oh God, You have ignited the sparks within us into a blazing demand for freedom, equality and justice. This quest cost Harriet Tubman sleepless nights, as she led her people to freedom; it was an equality that Rosa Parks and civil rights activists fought for and gave their lives for; it was a justice that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Stood for, as thousands stood with him at the Lincoln Memorial. “Yet with a study beat, have not our weary feet, come to the place for which our fathers sighed?” . Oh God, You have seen our tears. You have been pained by the evil of human hearts. Yet, You loved humanity enough that You sent Your only Son to identify with the outcast, marginalized and rejected. As the cries of Jesus pierced Your heart, so have the cries of your people - cries from different cultures and in different languages. “God of our weary years, God of our silent tears.” Oh God, You answered us during our exodus from Africa. You wiped every teardrop during our exile in captivity. Our foreparents dared to dream that one day, on these shores, we would become politicians, preachers, writers, scientists, artists, and so much more. educators, doctors, ‘Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee.” Our ancestors’ hard work, their courage, their convictions, and their belief in You paved the way for our emancipation and education. You have set us free. “Free at last, free at last, thank God Almighty, I’m free at last!” (All Together) “Lest our hearts drunk with the wine of the world we forget Thee. Shadowed beneath Thy hand, may we forever stand. True to our God and true to our native land.” VERSE 1: Lift every voice and sing, till earth and heaven ring, ring with the harmonies of liberty; Let our rejoicing rise, high as the listening skies, let it resound loud as the rolling sea. Sing a song full of the faith that the darkness has taught us, sing a song full of the hope that the present has taught us; Facing the rising sun, of our new day begun; Let us march on till victory is won. VERSE 2: the days Stony the road we trod, bitter the casting rod, felt in when hope unborn had died; Yet with a steady beat, have not our weary feet, come to the place which our fathers sighed? We have come over a way that with tears has been watered, we have come treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered; Out from the gloomy past, till now we stand at last; Where the white glean of our bright star is cast. VERSE 3: God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, Thou who hast brought us thus far on the way; Thou who has by Thy might, led us into the light, keep us forever in the path we pray. Lest our feet stray from the places, our God where we met Thee, lest our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee; Shadowed beneath Thy hand, may we forever stand; True to our God, true to our native land.
