For millennia, the art of storytelling has defined and inspired human communities around the world. Weber State University and the Department of Teacher Education are pleased to contribute to this long-standing tradition by presenting the 14" annual Storytelling Festival. We extend a warm welcome to all Storytellers and their listeners. Thank you for sharing your creativity with the campus and our community. F, Ann Millner, President Weber State University F. It was a dark and stormy night.” (He really said that!) “The wind howled. Huge black clouds swirled around the moon.” Max's whole person became the scudding clouds. His hands were bolts of lightning arcing across the sky. His voice was the moaning wind. He led us ona terrifying journey into the attic. We imagined fantastic monster shadows among the dusty boxes revealed in sudden bursts of lightning. The crashing thunder left us shivering. Just then, Max's father bounded up the stairs. He rushed to the window, raised his strong arms and exerting all his heroic super powers ordered the horrible storm to cease! Not able to resist, the clouds scattered in a fury. As soft moonlight, streamed through the small round attic window, all of the monsters disappeared. “Don't tell my Dad,” whispered Max conspiratorially. “He won't remember.” But we do remember, Max. Your little-boy story and the way you told it are now part of our family story. The stories we hear from one another as well as the stories we tell to each other bind us together. They explain who we are and give us strength for ‘the journey. Studs Terkel, the great storyteller of the common man explained, “People are hungry for stories. It’s part of our very being. Storytelling is a form of history, of immortality too. It goes from one generation to another.” For the 14th time, the Weber State University Storytelling Festival welcomes tellers and listeners alike to celebrate the humanity that we all share. Thousands of area school children, families, adults, college students, and senior citizens alike gather together for the enjoyment of storytelling and to share community histories, traditions, talents and cultures. Some of the students who told stories at the first festivals are now parents and teachers bringing their own children. Listeners will be treated to the artistry of Donald Davis and Patrick Ball who each are making return appearances at the Festival. Beauty and the Beast (husband and wife team Mitch Weiss and Martha Hamilton) and Leeny Del Seamonds are performing here for the first time. In addition, 30 well-seasoned festival storytellers from the area and nearly 90 student storytellers will perform in 49 separate Festival events. So, let's get cozy. Sit here, close together. The truths that pass through our hearts in the stories that we hear and tell will remind us who we are. 2010 Karen J.
