Februarv CoruUaly 2 26-28. 20-26, 2024 2U2Z4 weber.edu /storytelling Welcome to the 28th Annual Weber Storytelling Festival - where stories come alive and the spirit of celebration fills the air! We are thrilled to have you join us for this incredible event, marking another year of creativity and community. We invite you to immerse yourself in the magic that unfolds during these stories. We've curated a lineup of storytellers that are certain to captivate your hearts and minds. This year's theme, Greatest of All Tales, serves as a guiding thread for our program, ensuring a harmonious blend of tradition and novelty. WSU’s Storytelling Festival is unique in that we strive to build the art of storytelling in our community youth by providing opportunities for local children to tell their stories. We also aim to spread the joy of storytelling to those who cannot attend events on campus through outreach events at local schools and senior centers. Whether you're a seasoned storyteller, an avid listener, or a first-time visitor, there's something here for everyone. Prepare to embark on a journey of wonder, laughter, and discovery. Let the magic of storytelling connect us, inspire us, and remind us of the beauty that lies in the diversity of our narratives. Now that she has retired after 30 years as a faculty member of the teacher education department, her storytelling focus is in her family. As Grandma Ann, no family gathering is complete without her rendition of “The Little Wide-mouthed Frog” or the retelling of favorite ancestor stories. A long-time member of the WSU Storytelling Festival Committee, beginning with its inception, and, later, as its chair for eight years, Ann is dedicated to connecting teller, story and listener in those enchanted moments outside of time. She was awarded the Festival’s Karen J. Ashton Storytelling Award. — 28th annual — STORYTELLING FESTIVAL: 2024 KAREN J. ASHTON STORYTELLING AWARD DeeDee Johnson Mower exemplifies and perpetuates the spirit and love of storytelling that Karen Ashton has so generously developed and shared with the citizens of the Wasatch Front. DeeDee became involved with the WSU Storytelling Festival as soon as she joined the faculty of the Teacher Education Department at Weber State University in 2014, and she has been intimately involved ever since. She first began serving as a member of the executive committee for two years and then became the chair of the festival in 2016 and served in that capacity for three years. As the chair, she introduced teacher recognition awards and the position of storytelling fellow. She also integrated an art exhibit, Eyes Toward the Past, into the festival and utilized the storytellers as readers of the historical blurbs of the events the paintings represented. Over the years, she has served, rubbed shoulders with, dined with, and developed friendships with many tellers, and has found great delight in bringing students and children to listen to their tales. She has worked closely with the various sponsors and organizers of the festival and has coordinated numerous activities herself during the festival. She has also assisted in storytelling performances by acting as an emcee. She loves the stories, she loves the tellers, and she loves the festival. Her favorite thing about the festival is that it boasts the greatest number of youth storytellers in the nation. She herself boasts of having the greatest number of cellphone photos of festival participants over the last decade. DeeDee continues to advocate for and support the festival in her current role as the Teacher Education Department Chair. THE KAREN J ASHTON AWARD In 1990, the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival began its run in Karen J. Ashton’s backyard, moving to larger venues and becoming a standard of storytelling in the country. The Weber State University Storytelling Festival began just six years later with Karen’s enthusiastic encouragement. This award pays homage to her vision of what the renewal of the ancient art of storytelling can do for a contemporary community. Karen is well respected in the world of professional storytelling as one who nurtures storytellers and their art. The Karen J. Ashton Storytelling Award is presented annually to a deserving community member who perpetuates the art and purpose of storytelling. Previous Karen J. Waiting for his big break, he filled his childhood with performance opportunities. Cast as Ebenezer Scrooge in a second-grade production of Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” Tim later played Jed Clampett in “A Beverly Hillbillies Christmas.” Demonstrating that he could raise one eyebrow and thereby look “wicked” Tim’s Sunday school teacher cast him as King Herod in the annual Christmas pageant. As a teenager Tim produced puppet shows for children’s birthday parties. His fee was $20 per show, but he offered a $5 discount if you could give him a ride because he was not yet old enough to drive. As an award-winning high school drama student Tim toured the East Coast in 1987 with a Broadway style musical. As a theatre major in college he studied Shakespeare and Romantic Opera, but when he took an elective class in storytelling he found himself. After graduation, Tim taught English Language Arts and Drama for five years. Drawing on his love of show business his teaching methods were often considered “unorthodox and disruptive.” In 2000 Tim left the classroom to pursue a career as a professional storyteller. To date he has shared his “unorthodox and disruptive” teaching methods with more than a quarter million children! In 2012 Tim began touring the National Storytelling Circuit performing at over fifty different festivals. Occasionally, Tim provides workshops for corporate clients such as the North Carolina County Commissioners, Dollywood Dream More Resort, Ballad Health, and Daramic LLC.
