Many people follow the custom of wearing a carnation on this day. A colored carnation means that a person's mother is living; a white one indicates that a person's mother is dead. A day for honoring mothers was observed many years ago in England. It was called Mothering Sunday and came in midLent. Julia Ward Howe made the first known suggestion for a Mother's day in the United States in 1872. She suggested June 2. Mary Towles Sasseen, a Kentuchy schoolteacher, Started conducting Mother's Day celebrations in 1887. Frank E. Hering of South Bend, Indiana launched a campaign for the observance of Mother's Day in 1904. Three years later, Anna Jarvis of Grafton, West Virginia, and Philadelphia, began a campaign for a nationwide obseyvance of Mother's Day. She chose the Second Sunday in May, and began the custom of wearing a carnation. At a general conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1912, a delegation from Andrews Church introduced a resolution recognizing Anna Jarvis as the Founder of Mother's Day. It suggested that the Second Sunday in May be observed as Mother's Day. Mother's Day received nationwide recognition on May 9, 1914. On that day, President Woodrow Wilson signed a joing resolution of Congress recommending that Congress and the executive department of the government observe Mother's Day. The following year, the President was authorized to proclaim Mother's Day as an annual national observance. Chuck Naw Lion Beph!stMe d r o A A AF Photo by H. It is the The services of Palm Sunday honor Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem. Jesus entered his last week on earth riding into Jerusalem on a donkey under a canopy of palm branches, with crowds hailing him as their king. To announce that he was indeed the Messiah, Jesus chose a time when all Israel would be gathered at Jerusalem, a place where huge crowds could see him, and a way of proclaiming his mission that was unmistakable. The people who were praising God for giving them a king had the wrong idea about Jesus. They were sure he would be a national leader who would restore their nation to its former glory, and thus they were deaf to the words of their prophets and blind to Jesus’ real mission. When it became apparent that Jesus was not going to fulfill their hopes many people turned against him. Palm Sunday was first celebrated in the 300’s by the Christian Church in Jerusalem. A joyous procession started at the Mount of Olives. The Bishop took the part of Jesus and rode ona donkey. Children sang and waved palm branches. The Roman Catholic celebration became a solemn processional and a Mass during which the Gospel story of the Crucifixion is chanted solemnly. In the Greek Church, Palm Sunday is a day of rejoicing. Palms are blessed and held, but there is no procession. Protestant churches in general have very simple Palm Sunday services. In many places, laurel, olive, willow, and other branches are used instead of the palm. Thanks To All For Helping New Zion, your financial stewardship is appreciated. Nelson God...the same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe". (John 1:6-7) A MEANING OF "ANNIVERSARY" To New Zion Baptist Church, anniversary means looking back to the Wall Avenue Baptist Church and remembering all of the dedication, sacrifice, and commitment that went not only into building Wall Avenue but also building the New Zion Baptist Church. It means remembering the various pastors who came this way and led this God's people. It includes looking at previous brochures and recounting the blessings God provided at each juncture in our 76-year history. It means looking at the present, assessing our needs - both spiritual and financial; and making a commitment to do all we can while we can to measure up to the standards that God has set for us. It means encouraging and teaching our youth and children, so that they will accept Jesus as their personal Lord and Saviour, unite with New Zion or some church, and carry out the principles of God's word. Anniversary means looking into the future and preparing for a day when man will not endure sound doctrine, children will not obey their parents, parents will provoke their children, false prophets will be on the increase, and almost total turning away from God will occur. And, anniversary means remembering that Jesus died that all who would believe might be saved. He arose from the dead and is seated at the right hand of His father, interceding for this, His people. It means that He said the gates of hell will not prevail against His church. What a comforting declaration. Yes, anniversary is a special word and we observe our 76th Anniversary remembering that we must not forget the past or linger in the present, but work towards the future.
