She concluded her visit by performing a dramatized reading of Charlotte Bronté's “Jane Eyre." POP PHILOSOPHY What do “Seinfeld,” “The Sopranos" and baseball have in common? Besides being broadcast on television, they were the topic of a one-day seminar at the Smithsonian Institution presented by associate philosophy professor Richard Greene. As part of the Smithsonian's Resident Associate Program, Greene drew on elements of pop culture to discuss principles of philosophy. Greene was Invited to present the seminar as a result of his work with the Open Court Publishing Company's “Philosophy and Pop Culture Series." REACHING FOR THE STARS WSU's Ott Planetarium recently received a $1 million federal appropriation from the United States Congress. The money will help the facility expand its educational outreach efforts, especially to underserved portions of the population such as Spanish-speaking audiences and schoolchildren in rural areas. The planetarium is one of the first facilities in the country to translate popular star shows into Spanish, making astronomy and space exploration more accessible to the nation's growing Hispanic population. During the semester, the planetarium offers public star shows every Wednesday evening. Visit weber.edu/planetarium for more information. AWARD WINNERS For the second time in three years, the Utah Professor of the Year teaches at WSU. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education named Yasmen Simonian, professor and chair of WSU's Department of Clinical Laboratory Sciences, as the 2005 Utah Professor of the Year. National and state award winners were selected from nearly 400 top professors nominated around the country. Psychology professor and department chair Eric Amsel is the 2006 John S. Hinckley Fellow. Amsel has been at WSU since 1996 and takes great pride In serving as a mentor to students and collaborating with them on undergraduate research. Outside the classroom, Amsel's research has focused on cognitive development. The Hinckley award, presented annually since 1991, honors a member of the WSU faculty who has excelled in teaching, scholarship and Service. REACHING OUT Students from eight different clubs and organizations on campus helped organize a silent auction and benefit concert at the Ogden campus in late March. The event helped raise more than $12,000 for an educational center in Rwanda that assists victims of that nation’s genocide. The funds will go toward the construction of a concrete enclosure around a well, teaching classes at the center, and purchasing books and furniture for its library. “These students are taking It upon themselves to be aware and engaged locally and globally," said assistant geography professor Julie Rich. MEETING THE ‘LOVELY AUTHOR In recent years, few novels have captured both the critical acclaim and popularity of Alice Sebold's “The Lovely Bones,” a rare achievement for an author's first work of fiction. As the keynote speaker at this year's National Undergraduate Literature Conference, Sebold read excerpts from her work and offered insights about her writing. WSU's literature conference, now entering its third decade, is the only one in the country that focuses exclusively on undergraduates. "The key is recruiting good players, good students and quality people. That's the formula for success, and that is what | plan to bring to Weber State University," Rahe said at the press conference announcing his new position. “There are a lot of positives to build on." Rahe's coaching pedigree is filled with success. Before his most recent job as an assistant at the University of Utah, Rahe spent 13 years under Stew Morrill at both Colorado State University and then Utah State University. Morrill was trained under Mike Montgomery, now coach of the NBA's Golden State Warriors; as an assistant, Montgomery learned from Jud Heathcote, who retired after winning 340 games and a national championship at Michigan State University. Coincidentally, Heathcote's last game was an upset loss to the No. 14 seed WSU Wildcats in the first round of the 1995 NCAA tournament. A New HOME The WSU volleyball team will move to the newly remodeled Swenson Building for the fall 2006 season. In years past the Wildcats have played home matches at the Dee Events Center. Al Givens, who enters his 14th season as the head coach of the WSU volleyball program in 2006, is looking forward to the change of scenery. "Not only will it be easier to have a set practice time In © wsvU MAGAZINE | Spring 2006 the afternoon, it's going to create a fantastic environment for volleyball,” he said. “I think the facility is going to be amazing, and our matches will be a lot more intimate and exciting for the fans.” Four ADDED TO HALL OF FAME Weber State University Athletics added four former stars to its hall of fame: Jimmy DeGraffenried, the Big Sky Conference's 1996 MVP in men’s basketball; Halvor Hagen, an alumnus and eight-year veteran of the NFL; Chris Jones, a two-time NCAA Cross Country All-American; and Shauna Watson Turner, three- time winner of the Big Sky Conference shot put championship. They were honored at the annual hall of fame banquet Feb. 14 at the Ogden Eccles Conference Center. DeGraffenried now works as a general contractor in Payson, Utah; Hagen is a CFO and contracts manager in New England; Jones Is a state trooper for the Utah Highway Patrol; and Turner works as a juvenile probation officer in Las Vegas. BROKEN RECORDS At separate meets in Seattle three weeks apart, both Wiley King and Seth Pilkington set WSU indoor track and field records. King beat his own record in the heptathlon by earning 5,458 points in late January, giving him six school records in indoor and outdoor track and field. | Pilkington's performance was equally remarkable: He set both the university and Big Sky Conference record in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 13:51.50. That time is more than 20 seconds better than the previous WSU record set in 1983 by Kurt Black. He's No ROOKIE It's not often that a coach with decades of experience gets a newcomer's honor, but WSU head football coach Ron McBride was named "best first-year coach” by The Sports Network's Division |-AA football expert, Matt Dougherty. ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT TASKS FOR WORLD-CLASS RUNNERS IS FINDING A TRAINING partner capable of pushing them to be their best. Seth Pilkington hasn't had to worry about that. He is following in his father’s footsteps as one of the best track athletes to compete at Weber State University. “Growing up, I learned what it takes to excel,” Seth said. “It helps to have someone who has raced at the highest level as your coach.” Paul Pilkington ‘81 enjoyed a long and successful track career. He won the USA Track and Field marathon national championship in 1994, ranked in the top ro in the country in the marathon twice, and qualified for the Olympic Trials in 1988, 1992, 1996 and 2000. He continues to be involved with the WSU track program as an assistant coach. “Seth has been around world-class athletes all his life, so he’s not star-struck,” Paul said. “Hes had world-record holders staying in our house since he was a child, so he knows he can compete against anybody.” That doesnt mean Seth has spent his entire life as a runner. Paul wouldn't allow Seth to begin training until he was in junior high school and part of an organized program; he wanted his son to have a normal childhood. “Seth played lots of different sports growing up, especially soccer, Paul said. In high school, Seth was a three-time high school track all-American. After stops at the University of Oregon and the University of Illinois, Seth returned to Utah last fall to run for WSU track and field coach Chick Hislop, who coached Paul 25 years earlier. “They are both outstanding people,’ Hislop said. “They're the type of people we'e proud to say are part of the Weber State community.” In his short time in the program, Seth has set a university and conference record and been named the Big Sky Conference Athlete of the Week five times. “There have been a lot of great runners in the Big Sky, a lot of all-Americans, so it’s an honor to be a recordholder, Seth said. Seth's one setback this year came in the Big Sky Conference Cross Country Championships in October at Northern Arizona University. With only 800 meters to go and a 15-second lead, Seth cramped up, became dizzy and fell. He recovered in time to finish roth and advance to NCAA Mountain Regionals, but his dream of winning the conference championship was gone. Paul hurt for his son. “It was frustrating, because I knew how hard he had worked for it,” Paul said. “It's just athletics, though, and life goes on.” Although he was disappointed, Seth feels the experience was valuable. “Races like that make you appreciate the good ones,” Seth said. “It was difficult at the time, but in the long run it will continue to help me. | ended my season really hungry.” That hunger continued into the indoor track and field season, when Seth shattered a 23-year-old WSU record in the 5,o00-meter run by more PHOTOS BY ZAC WILLIAMS than 20 seconds, with a time of 13:51.50 at the Washington Invitational in February. It was also the best time ever by a Big Sky athlete. Seth hopes to continue to improve and earn all-American honors in indoor and outdoor track. His senior year will be in the spring of 2008, so his goal is to qualify for the Olympic summer games in Beijing. “Distance runners dont reach their peak until their late 20s or early 30s, Paul said. “Seth could be in position to qualify for several Olympics.” Travis Clemens, University Communications Boaaa sae Seo ace me a Racing in His 3 HAL CRIMMEL SITS ON AN OVERTURNED BUCKET by the Green River i in Dinosaur National = ul oc. : Monument, a1 straw hatcited histi tri is @3350, ‘Studies in ante oe This. : summer's course, called “Creative Nonfiction i in Dinosaur National Monument,” consists of oncampus meetings to read and analyze the work ie nature writers, followed by a trip into the wild where students can find their own inspiration. “To the teiCle UAaitiated, sled i+ abt eee mI L+ a Lis appear erman a sould tale Hhread, seraps of Leathers and bits ot ee metarials, tle iatention eles To as me thet it fl, i= own Leave nm Ais son oe fooling as are ON its gracious Lies, to iA aq i On tle even and Case. out to jes Most who freely dl ee Several Shateaseat receivia iato nature, end long oC Shy Hat was thing? era CL, people and otters. tLis aq ae [acle with, second ghter on Ferns fur a Levorite breathing tleir preven IS Deconte pantin tiers eelorex tie dts Les soothing calor iee Heat sae Occasions to MIA Le true, ene egal Marilee Mason, a nontraditional student and mom who is taking the class to improve her ability to write creative nonfiction, compliments Stanger on his use of metaphor. Crimmel has been teaching English literature and writing classes in the outdoors for 12 years. In addition to teaching Abbey in the desert, Crimmel’s adventures include Willa Cather in the tallgrass prairie of a Midwestern campus arboretum and “the literature of winter on the shore of Lake Superior. His experiences became the inspiration for an edited collection of essays titled “Teaching in the Field.” “In an outdoor classroom, students are free from the distractions of campus and their daily lives,” Crimmel explains. “As a result, they can reflect on what they are learning and attain a focus and clarity of thought not always possible in a traditional classroom environment.” When the class discussion breaks up for the evening, a few people linger around the campfire, listening to Wheeler's story of taking a date to the local dump because it was the make-out spot in his hometown. Between bursts of uncontrollable laughter from the group, Crimmel suggests Wheeler may be overdosing on Abbey. Further away, Mason and Wahlstrom hike down to the river, using the cover of darkness to bathe after a long day in the desert sun. As midnight approaches, a crescent moon peeks over the rim of Split Mountain, reflecting off the water and the concrete boat ramp. He searches for tinajas, impressions made in sandstone that store water. Tinajas are specific in shape, “steep at the upstream side and shallow at the downstream, with a pout like the lip of a pitcher,” Childs explains. “This gently sloped exit, a happenstance of hydrology and erosion, ensures that organic debris is flushed out with heavy rains.” Childs wanders the desert studying old maps left by missionaries who traveled the area. Our class stopped off for lunch, and the entire time we ate | glanced at a cliff up ahead, wondering If there was water on top. Could there be tinajas up there? My two friends, Ben and Kathy, joined me after lunch on a hike. We excitedly talked about Childs’ book and were glad to have a little time to hike at our own pace away from the group. It was a tough climb, grabbing onto rocks and each others hands, pulling one another up the steep terrain. Professors, artists and students collaborate, WSU MAGAZINE | Spring 2006 inspired by the legacy of an ancient inland sea A TEENAGE BOY PICKS UP HIS ACOUSTIC GUITAR. “My inspiration is a storm, he says, “with thunder rolling in.” It’s 8:15 on a Tuesday morning at the DaVinci Academy for Science and the Arts in downtown Ogden. A dozen or so students have gathered in the cafeteria for a session with guitarist and composer Brad Richter, who is guiding them in a year-long project of music composition, poetry, photography and artwork. This project is one piece, and a microcosm, of a collaborative effort between Richter and Weber State University faculty members. The collaboration is as wide-ranging as its inspiration: the ancient Lake Bonneville, an inland sea that once covered much of what is now Utah. The boy plays, and Richter watches and listens intently before making suggestions: “Can you make it so the thunder is 40 miles away? It comes up quickly from nothing, like it does in nature. Let it breathe for a second in between. He reaches for the guitar. “Can I borrow it?” His fingers fly over the strings, coaxing the sound of distant thunder that builds into a crashing storm. The students glance at each other, eyebrows raised. This guy is good. Right Man for the Job Richter is, by all accounts, an incredible musical talent, a guitar virtuoso. He has been a national fingerpicking champion and winner of the Royal College of Music guitar competition. But what really sets Richter apart from other talented musicians is the inspiration he takes from nature. Living in Arizona, Richter draws upon his stunning surroundings, hiking to remote spots to sit and compose for hours at a time. His latest CD, “A Whisper in the Desert,” pays homage to the American Southwest. The music is complex and compelling, with echoes of traditional Native American and Mexican music. It tingles, yet is tranquil, creating a powerful sense of connection with the land that inspired the sound. Richter devotes much of his time to connecting with people, as well. While building a successful musical career, he also focuses on outreach and education, developing residency programs that allow him to work with schoolchildren, college students and community groups. Richter does this work because he believes music has the power to change lives. “It is a universal language, a tie that binds us to one another across PHOTOS BY THOMAS AMMON, ILLUSTRATIONS BY MARK BIDDLE, POETRY BY KENNETH BREWER age, culture and economy, and reconnects us with our most profound emotions, he says. An ear for his natural surroundings, along with his dedication to outreach, made Richter the perfect musical partner in an interdisciplinary project at WSU. The university commissioned him to compose guitar and ensemble pieces to accompany a body of artistic work inspired by Lake Bonneville, including poetry by late Utah poet laureate Kenneth Brewer and illustrations by visual arts professor Mark Biddle. “Commissioning new work is important. It keeps art happening, says Diane Stern, director of WSU’s Cultural Affairs program. “Using Lake Bonneville as a point of inspiration identifies the work with our region and brings the art home.” Putting the Pieces Together The project has been an artistic challenge for Biddle, who created illustrations and designed the layout for the book of artwork and poetry that accompanies the CD of original compositions. “Tve never really worked in a situation where the music, visuals and poetry were all being created simultaneously, he said. Brewers work includes five poems, collectively called “Stories from Lake Bonneville.” The poems were both a love song to his home state and a swan song of his career; he passed away in March after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Poet laureate since 2003, Brewer had a distinguished writing and teaching career and was a much-loved member of Utah's artistic community. “His poetry set the tone for the rest of the project,” Biddle says. “Brad was inspired by the idea of using the poetry as lyrics for his music, and I've looked to the poems for images.” Biddles illustrations follow a watery theme: Darting fish surround a sunken guitar, the instruments clean curves distorted by currents. A whales tail slaps across a page. A lake surface gives shadowy clues of the creatures swimming beneath. In places, words form pictures: The foreword’s circular construction mirrors the rings of a puddle disturbed by a tossed pebble. As Richter partnered with Brewer and Biddle to build this artistic body of work, he also welcomed the help of colleagues in the humanities and sciences. English instructor Brad Roghaar helped the students write poetry for the project, while geosciences professor Adolph Yonkee took the DaVinci students up on the foothills above the university to show how Lake Bonneville helped form their environment (see story on Page 14). _ aa WSU MAGAZINE | Spring 2006 Jennifer Philion, University Communications AAS ‘ue fs # aS ong ots ae fi (A i?oFad LZa 5 ie5 ff f ik #4 in, & APPi 3 £8é 7 tat F & if f oP £A Buda ieC ft eA t ras 2 PRP A Pe? is” i - fii BL A mere 15,000 years ago, this was Lake Bonneville. “When the lake was at its largest, my office would've been under 400 feet of water," says WSU geosciences professor Adolph Yonkee. “The lake was so large that the earth's crust bowed down under the weight of the water." It’s been great to see the energy they bring to this project, and to see that the energy isnt just there when I’m in town; it’s ongoing." DaVinci junior Amie Salas, a photographer, likes the interdisciplinary appeal of the project. “I believe that photography, as well as the paintings by another student, add another dimension, she says. “Not only will this presentation appeal to our audience's sense of hearing, but also their sense of sight, and more so their minds. Having more than music to listen to will draw their attention and capture their souls.” It’s a worthy aspiration for the students, and for Richter, who admits the entire project has touched him deeply. “I've grown really attached to the university and the people I've been working with,” he says. “The landscape, mS the other artists and scholars, and the abundance of possibility incorporate so much of what I love about life into this collaborative work of art. | think we've developed something very special.” DaVinci junior Amie Salas, who recently moved to Utah from Florida, says the trip gave her a greater appreciation for her new home. “The further | journey into this project, the more | learn,” she says. “| love the history I've learned about the formation of this area.” Yonkee says he has learned from this project as well. “It's been an interesting collaboration,’ he says. As patrons visited the exhibit and identified individuals in the now historic photographs, Sarah Langsdon, assistant curator of Special Collections, organized a team to conduct oral history interviews. This is a sample of photos that appeared in the exhibit, accompanied by the words of community members who shared their memories of the camp. Co) When the photographic exhibit “Prisoners of War in Ogden” opened last fall at WSU’s Stewart Library, it aroused so much public interest that a team worked to expand the exhibit with oral history interviews, additional photographs and video and audio segments. The exhibit, featuring photos of the World War Il POW camp in Ogden, began as a local feature for the theme “Building America’s Defense” at the fifth annual Utah Construction/Utah International Symposium. As articles about the exhibit appeared in print, the library’s teleohones began ringing. es os a rae) & Rerun Ri Beek REARED IN A SINGLE-PARENT FAMILY WITHOUT HEALTH insurance, Erica Baiden avoided going to the doctor. Many times, her family had to decide between something they had saved for and a visit to the doctor's office. Those experiences, along with a desire to make a difference for families like hers, led the 2003 Weber State University graduate to medical school, where she is in her third year. “T enjoy the relationships that I've already created with patients during their most intimate moments, she said. Dr. Jeffrey Booth 70, who has been a practicing rheumatologist in Ogden for more than 27 years, also wanted to be a physician from an early age. “I can't remember ever not wanting to enter the medical field, he said. “My father was a dentist, so I always knew I wanted to do something like that.” The opportunity for both Baiden and Booth to follow their dreams, however, hinged on acceptance to medical school. sees ee eater cua Pacdascs uence ones ieee erence eoietteaetal Pace S eue i “It's very humbling when people trust you with their lives.” — Dr. Julie C. Smith 88 It In 200s, more than 37,000 people applied to medical schools across the country, but only 48.1 percent of them were accepted, according to the Association of American Medical Schools. And while at first glance WSU might seem an unlikely Mecca for pre-med students, WSUs applicants fare much better than the national average. WSU averages 50 medical school applicants each year. Of them, approximately 62 percent are accepted. Booth credits the success to WSU's faculty. “For me, the opportunity to get to know most of my professors on a personal basis, that was huge, he said. Booth’s son Jeremy, who also attended WSU for his undergraduate work before moving on to medical school, was especially impressed by WSUss premed advisor, Kent Van de Graaff, who passed away in December 2005. “He really knew what needed to be accomplished and advocated for every WSU applicant, Jeremy said. “He was a big reason so many WSU students have been accepted. He knew everyone individually and worked a lot of extra hours on our behalf.” Students who are fortunate enough to be admitted to medical school must complete another four years of education and several more years of residencies and fellowships, depending on their specialization. For instance, to be a family physician, students complete a three-year residency in family medicine after the four years of medical school. “It’s been really busy,” said Jeremy, who will finish a three-year residency in emergency medicine this year at the Bay State Medical Center in Springfield, Mass. * It was very difficult at times, but at the end it’s very worth it.” He cant imagine getting through medical school without the support of his wife, Jodi, a1999 WSU grad finishing her training at the same medical center. “I don’t know how other people do it alone, he said. Starting Practice Dr. Julie C. Smith °88, a hematology oncologist, said the transition from a residency to running a private practice is difficult for a lot of new physicians. “In your fellowships you can always find the answer from mentors, but when you get on your own you have to know the answer, she said. “Theyre your patients.” According to Smith, her transition was easier because she had already been working in clinical laboratory science after finishing her undergraduate degree at WSU. “Since I was already working in the field I knew what I was getting into,” she said. Jeremy Booth, who is about to return to Ogden to work at McKay-Dee Hospital in the emergency room, said the move is both “exciting and frightening.” Helping Others Smith, who has a joint practice in Wenatchee, Wash., especially enjoys the personal experiences of her practice. “I like that I continue to learn on a daily basis from every patient, she said. “I learn about life, and I learn about death.” “It’s very humbling when people trust you with their lives,” she added. And even when she is treating patients with a terminal disease, she can still help. “I just try to give the best treatment possible and prolong their life,” she said. “The bonds that are formed with those patients and their family members are very special.” Jeffrey Booth says assisting people in pain is the best part of his job. “It’s a great feeling when somebody comes to me with a problem theyre having, and I can help them to overcome that and feel better,” he said. “And most of the time we can.” His son Jeremy knows the challenges and rewards that await him. “Growing up, I was around my dad and a lot of other physicians who were good influences and enjoyed what they were doing, he said. “I’m looking forward to being able to help people.” Travis Clemens, University Communications MMM Describe AGA VACA Doesn’t N— ‘Competitive’ EBER STATE BP}, elderrshipwas awarde, d ckw ua 0 Bla _: :Jo$17sh,60 sta c Ins _ the National Security Education N N WSU MAGAZINE | Spri ing 2006 museums. But Jardine may best be known for his two art instruction books, “Creating Cartoon Characters” and “Creating Cartoon Animals, which have sold more than 300,000 copies and have been published internationally. They ve even been translated into Cyrillic. Jardine rubbed shoulders with many of the well-known cartoonists in the country: Charles Schultz and Mort Walker wrote the introductions for his books. But Jardine doesnt consider himself a cartoonist. I’m more of an illustrator, he said. “And I’m interested in all different kinds of Jardine earned a certificate in commercial art from Weber in 1948, followed by an Associate of Science degree in 1949. “I graduated twice because | liked it so much, he joked. Before we knew it, we were at the head of the line, with someone asking, What would you like to enroll in?’ So we signed up." So began an education that would span 20 years and five degrees from three schools, culminating in a doctorate in philosophy. This education also inspired his desire to become a teacher. Jardine spent a decade teaching art at Utah high schools before moving to Minnesota to become director of the Art Instruction Schools. His teaching career, which also included 15 years at the University of Minnesota, spanned all areas of drawing, painting, sculpture and commercial art. The emeritus communication faculty member, who taught journalism, public relations and media law at Weber State University from 1981-2000, recently returned from a 30-day cruise on the Amazon. Stahle and his wife, Joyce, enjoyed busy days in ports of call in Mexico, Panama, Barbados, Grenada, Costa Rica and Brazil, while sailing out to sea by night to avoid Hurricane Otis. Even though he was on vacation, Stahle read newspapers in different cities. “I like looking at newspapers in other places,” Stahle said. “Even if I cant understand the language, it’s interesting to look at the headlines and photos and the layout of the news.” Visiting other countries and learning about new cultures also causes Stahle to reflect on our first amendment rights and his favorite subject as a professor: media law. “I enjoyed exposing students to new ideas, Stahle said about his teaching philosophy. “It wasnt enough to just explain an idea. I tried to challenge students to test the ideas we studied in class and understand how to apply the information to actual cases and examples. The media law class allowed Stahle to do just that. “Law is always interesting because it's a challenge for everyone to understand why the first amendment is the way itis, Stahle continued. “Students wonder, Why are things not absolutes?” Stahle said he particularly enjoyed the rich discussions that ensued from the law classes. One former student describes Stahle as someone with a quick wit, a warm smile and a meaningful answer for every question about media. Another remembers him as the kind of professor who put students at ease and who was always a good listener. But this didnt mean his classes were easy: One group of students, after a particularly difficult exam, decided the test must have been written by Stahle's evil twin, “Professor Elhats.” “His media law class was very difficult and challenging, but I cant remember enjoying any class as much as | did that class,” said Gary Toyn 91, who applies what he learned about public relations in his job as associate director of Alumni Relations at WSU. Stahle still teaches, even while hes on vacation: Studying cruise lines public relations materials, he critiques the layout of information and makes suggestions for improvement. “| give them input every cruise I go on. They may not want it, but I give it to them anyway, free of charge, Stahle quipped. The highlight of his Amazon cruise came at Manaus, which is about 1,000 miles up the Amazon River. In addition to touring the famous opera house, the Stahles went on a nighttime excursion to catch caiman, a species of alligator. When a tour guide finally caught one, Joyce Stahle was the first person to hold it, while Larry snapped photos. Whether exploring first amendment issues in the classroom or sailing the farthest reaches of an exotic river, Stahle’s curiosity and love of learning remain strong. UND: WEBER’S VICTORY BELL AH, THE SOUND OF VICTORY! THAT’S RIGHT, victory has a sound. It’s not the helmet-popping hit to prevent a last-minute touchdown, or the mesh- snapping swish of a game-winning basket. At Weber State University, it’s the ringing of the victory bell. The victory bell has a long history at the university as well as in the Ogden community. It first hung in Ogdenss old city hall building in 1888. In the 1930s, Weber College students convinced Ogden City officials to donate the bell to campus before the building was demolished. The 1,000-pound bell, 34 inches in diameter, was mounted on the chassis of an old automobile to make it easier to move from event to event. The bell became a fixture at Wildcat athletic events beginning with homecoming 1939. Over the years the bell became a symbol of victory and school spirit, its role immortalized in the words to the school fight song, “Were going to ring the bell of victory tonight.” And ring it they did, game after game, year after year, until ... it stopped. Its not clear why or when the victory bell stopped ringing at Wildcat events. But one eventful day in the spring of 2002, the bell was rediscovered after years in storage under Stewart Stadium. The WSU Emeriti Alumni Council provided funds to restore the bell, including a fresh coat of paint. Its chassis also received a new set of tires. Chad Gerrety, WSU assistant athletic director for marketing, said that bringing back the bell was important in maintaining an athletic tradition. “We are always looking for traditions that stand the test of time and that fans can really relate to, he said. Margie Esquibel, advisor to the Emeriti Alumni Council, agrees that these traditions are important. “Now that the bell has been embraced by the students and we hear it ring at nearly every home game, its nice to know that our Emeriti Alumni Council was responsible for bringing back a great tradition,| she said. Members of the council take pride in knowing they helped pass this tradition on to future generations of WSU students. The victory bell is once again a part of Wildcat Athletics at the football games. After each victory the football team gathers around, rings the bell and sings the Wildcat fight song, ensuring that the tradition of the victory bell lives on.
