BEST IN THE STATE ALL IN THE FAMILY WSU's acclaimed pre-med program has received $2 million in funding, thanks to a generous gift from a private donor, Martha Ann Dumke Healy. Over the next four years, the program will receive $500,000 annually, which will be used to purchase state-of-the-art laboratory equipment and provide scholarships and fellowships to pre-med students. The program now will be called the Dr. Ezekiel R. ... AGAIN The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education named Eric Amsel, professor and chair of WSU's . Dumke Family Pre-Medical Program. Department of Psychology, the 2006 Utah Professor of the Year. This marks the third time in four years that a WSU faculty member has received the honor. Amsel joined the WSU faculty in 1996. HONORING COMMUNITY SERVICE Associate professor of history Kathryn MacKay Is the inaugural recipient of the John A. Lindquist Award. The honor recognizes a faculty or staff member who has demonstrated an ongoing commitment to mentoring WSU students in learning through community involvement. The award Is named for Weber College alumnus John A. This marks the eighth time that a WSU moot court team has finished in the top 10 nationally. The WSU squad, featuring senior political science majors Danielle Stout and Veronica Lynagh, advanced to the national competition after winning the ACMA Western Regional The WSU Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl ended its own successful season by taking fifth at the 2007 national championships in Cincinnati. The WSU team of Rachel Robison, Brooke Robison, Jason Stout and Jacob Kunzler lost in the quarterfinals to the University of Miami, the eventual national champions. “| consider this to be my most successful ethics bowl team ever,” said Richard Greene, associate philosophy professor and the team's coach. OuT OF THIS WORLD WSU senior physics major Michael Malmrose Is focused on the big picture— the really big picture. Malmrose's undergraduate research led to the discovery of a previously unknown star in a galaxy outside the Milky Way. The discovery also validated a new planet-hunting method that's been in development at WSU over the past three years. The star, which is smaller than our sun, was found orbiting a binary system in the Large Magellanic Cloud, one of the nearest neighboring galaxies. WSU students and faculty invented a method for locating celestial bodies orbiting binary systems. Using their theory, the students wrote a computer software program to analyze existing data of binary systems, looking for tell-tale signs of orbiting objects. Malmrose's discovery may be just the tip of the iceberg, given that the database being used has more than 6,800 binary systems to study. The team's work will be submitted to the Astrophysical Journal for peer review later this year. Senior David Patten was named the regular-season and conference tournament most valuable player and earned an honorable mention on the 2006O7 AP All-America team. Meanwhile, the U.S. Basketball Writers Association awarded Rahe the District VIII coach of the year award, and he also was named the Big Sky _ Conference coach of the year. In the NCAA tournament, the Wildcats received a No. 15 seed and traveled to Sacramento, Calif., to take on the UCLA Bruins, whose head coach is WSU alumnus Ben Howland. Howland's team, which last year played in the national championship game, defeated the Wildcats in the opening round, 70-42. The Wildcats finished Rahe's first season at WSU with 20 wins and 12 losses. The Wildcats were led by senior distance runner Lindsey Anderson, who won both the 3,000- and 3,000-meter races to earn the “Woman Athlete of the Meet" award. The Morgan, Utah, native followed up her performance with a seventh-place finish at the NCAA 5,000-meter championships in March, earning All-American honors. She also set a school record by running the race in 16:00.77. To cap the team’s successful season, coach Jim Blaisdell was named the conference's coach of the year for the 17th time. The men's team also fared well in the championship meet, finishing two points behind Sacramento State University for second place. ACADEMIC AND ATHLETIC The WSU men's and women's cross country teams followed their fall conference championships by earning academic honors from the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Both teams received Division | AllAcademic honors for the 2006 season. The discussion is so lively that professor Lloyd Burton hates to bring it to a close. Realizing that class should have ended 10 minutes ago, Burton dismisses his students for the evening, _ though some linger to ask questions of classmates who had first-hand experience with socialized health systems, like those found in Canada and England. With full-time health care supervisors and managers making up a significant portion of his ~~» class, one of the first in WSU’s new Master's of Approved by the Utah Board of Regents in June 2006, the MHA program is designed to meet the needs of working students wanting to advance their health care careers and prepare for executive leadership positions, explained Kenneth Johnson, associate dean of the Dr. Ezekiel R. Dumke College of Health Professions and MHA program director. Sharon Petersen, who works as a nursing consultant for a national firm based in Dallas and enrolls 34 students who were accepted from a long waiting list. “In health care facilities around the region, there are many individuals in mid-management-level positions who want to get their master’s degrees, and Weber State’s MHA program gives them that opportunity with health-related coursework,” said John Grima, director of planning and development for Intermountain Health Care’s Urban North Region and adjunct MHA faculty. ~The program also has ambitions to get students who are one to two years out of their undergraduate programs on executive management tracks in the health care field. Utah hasn't had a program like that before, and now that we do, that’s a good thing.” Already, 60 to 70 inquiries have crossed Johnson's desk for the fall of 2007. PRA CO WSU MAGAZINE | Spring 2007 Health Administration program, debates and conversations are plentiful. ~The students’ experiences are what made this particular discussion so rich,” said Burton, associate professor in the MHA program and chair of the Department of Health Administrative Services. “They were able to lay out the pros and cons in a very real way rather than speaking from a theoretical perspective.” also as an occupational health nurse specialist for Kimberly-Clark Corp, is excited to be in the program. “With my clinical background augmenting the preparation provided through the MHA program, I will be better prepared for the complexities associated with managing health care organizations, she said. Petersen mentioned that one of the most valuable things she has learned so far is that hospital operations require a ‘systems thinking” approach. “Nobody is isolated in the decision-making process; changes in one area have rippling and far-reaching effects in other areas,” Petersen explained. Actually, it was a hot July day when the Utah Board of Regents approved WSU's Master's of Art in English program. And while elated, faculty members Kathleen Herndon and Merlin Cheney admit it was a little frightening. After all, they only had a month before the fall 2006 semester began. After 30 days of “kicking it into high gear,” the Department of English accepted 40 students into the program from a waiting list of more than 100. “We were going to be satisfied with 25, so when we got as many as we did, we were just speechless, said Herndon, department chair. “We hope to have another great group, he said. “We also hope that within the next couple of years weIl be able to offer much of what we do online so we can reach even more students and be an even greater resource for the community and the state.” “| was very excited to hear that Weber State was offering a graduate program in English," said Taralyn A. Griffin, who Is currently pursuing the degree. “Because my job and my life are centered in the Ogden area, | was thrilled to - have a master’s program that would be so close. | enjoyed my undergraduate work here immensely, So | knew I'd also be pleased with the graduate program. Graduate Education at WSU Weber State College began offering its first two masters degrees—teacher education and accounting—nearly 30 years ago. Today, as a university, WSU offers a total of six master’s programs, having added business administration and criminal justice in the early 2000s, and most recently health administration and English. “Our graduate degree programs have been designed to meet specific needs in the community, said provost Michael Vaughan, noting how the university spends time talking with local businesses and organizations about their workforce needs. “Whenever we see or hear of a significant need, we attempt to fill it.” Currently, a total of 452 students are enrolled in WSUs graduate degree programs, and Vaughan expects that number to increase as the MHA and English programs mature. He also anticipates that the university will develop additional degrees in the future, most likely related to health care fields. “We definitely want to expand our graduate program offerings, he said. “Of course, we ll be looking to expand our undergraduate program offerings as well.” , a a. Small startup companies use this space—Grow Utah Ventures’ new Entrepreneurial Station, or E Station—as a “business incubator,” their home base until they are large enough to move out on their own. O WSU MAGAZINE | Spring 2007 Amidst the E Station buzz, a group of Weber State University students meets weekly to screen proposals from local entrepreneurs with big ideas. This screening is the first step toward receiving funding, expert advice and support from Grow Utah Ventures—help that could give a fledgling business a big step up toward success. Grow Utah Ventures was created by local entrepreneur Alan Hall, founder and chairman of MarketStar, based in Ogden. “This is giving back to the community in a significant way, by improving local economic development,” he says. “If we provide funding dollars, expertise and experience to help people get their businesses off the ground, they in turn will provide employment to more people, and hopefully in the future be able to give back themselves.” For almost as long as Grow Utah Ventures has existed, it has had a partnership with WSU students. Two years ago, Hall approached the WSU student group Weber Entrepreneurs Association (WEA), comprised mainly of students in the John B. Goddard School of Business & Economics, with the idea of involving students in hands-on work with his organization. As the relationship grew, Hall created an endowment to fund scholarships for the students involved. “I live in Weber County, I’m an alumnus of Weber, and I want to support the university,” Hall says. “I thought, if were going to educate people about entrepreneurialism, why not start with the university? We wanted a program that can benefit both students and the community. And after speaking with people from other schools, I think this is a unique program—there isnt anything else like it in the U.S.” Students in the WEA can apply for the chance to work on one of two Grow Utah Ventures teams. They learn the questions to ask and criteria to look for in each business proposal the organization receives, complete an initial screening, and decide which to pass on to WEA president Ryan Steinbeigle. He acts as the groups liaison with Hall, recommending which proposals Grow Utah Ventures should examine more closely. “This is the best experience I’ve had at WSU,” says Steinbeigle, a senior business administrationmanagement major. “It’s been an incredible networking opportunity; I ve gotten to know so many evaluating management, marketing, finance—all of the business functions they ve learned about in the classroom. The relationship has been positive from Hall’s perspective, as well. “These students put their time, energy and talent into Grow Utah Ventures,” he says. We looked at about 700 businesses last year, and the students screened most of those. Her work with Grow Utah Ventures, she says, will pay off. “As an entrepreneur myself, this experience is going to help me get my proposals tight and organized, because | know what investors want to see in a business plan. This will help me in the future to get funding for my own business ventures.» Business administration professor Tony Allred, WEAs faculty advisor, says the partnership is a great practical learning experience for students. “In the process of evaluating startup companies, theyre Hall hopes that what the students are learning now will help with their personal entrepreneurial dreams. “Theyre learning what makes a good business, because they re seeing the good and bad in all of the proposals theyre evaluating, he says. “I’m sure that some of these students will come back to us in the future with ideas of their own.” And others will be inspired by the principles behind Grow Utah Ventures. The girl is just one of many children Ashmead has met in his travels. Although she wasn't fond of him, his company would develop a uniquely fortified rice to make her and many other children stronger and healthier. “Her portrait reminds me of what my job is all about,” he said. Ashmead Is president of Albion Laboratories, a world leader in the development, manufacturing and sale of mineral products for humans, plants and animals. He also received the 2006 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award. Albion Laboratories DeWayne's father, the late Harvey Ashmead, founded Albion in 1956 with the only money he had—$250. It was a wise Investment, for Albion became the largest manufacturer of veterinary pharmaceuticals in the western United States, eventually producing vitamin and mineral supplements for animal feed. That venture led the company to where it is today. | Spring 2007 WSU MAGAZINE Entrepreneur of the Year Ashmead was named the Ernst & Young 2006 Entrepreneur of the Year in the health sciences/ services category for his groundbreaking mineral nutrition research. “My dad deserves the credit for learning how to make chelated minerals,” he said. “My contribution came later, when | asked how a chelated mineral was absorbed. But even so, the award would not have happened if it weren't for the exceptional employees at Albion. They are the heart and soul of the company." WSU provost Michael Vaughan, who holds a Ph.D. in economics, said explained Ashmead, who developed his keen interest in science at an early age. "No one knew why, so we began research to find the answer." a marketing major who later received his Ph.D. in The Ashmeads found that the animals had to convert minerals from inorganic form to an organic form in order to absorb them, a natural process called chelation. Albion was able to duplicate that process in the laboratory. N “We don't do humanitarian projects to build the company up, said Ashmead. “We do it to help the less fortunate. It's hard to look at undernourished children and not want to do something about it.” Ashmead also deserves credit. “Albion operates in a rapidly changing environment, and DeWayne has positioned the company to react quickly and take advantage of new opportunities,” Vaughan said. “The animals weren't absorbing the minerals,” _ After its success with animal supplements, Albion expanded its research into plant and human nutrition. Eventually Ashmead moved the company into food fortification and pharmaceutical production, making its products available to those in need all over the world. “When we gave animals our pre-chelated minerals, they grew better, had better reproduction rates and lower morbidity,” Ashmead said. Albion patented the process in 1968—the company’s first of more than 150 patents. As he looks back on his days at Weber, Ashmead, clinical nutrition from Donsbach University, recalls a powerful lesson from marketing professor Bill Tillman: Always be prepared. Ashmead gives that Same advice to new graduates and entrepreneurs. But it takes more than that to be a leader in such a challenging field, Vaughan said. “Successful business people and scientists share some common traits, one of which is an inquiring mind. DeWayne Is always asking questions and looking for new Opportunities." Philanthropy has built educational institutions, cured deadly diseases and continues to fund research and facilities dedicated to our health. Our generosity also funds religious, environmental and social efforts. Yet the vast majority of Americans are not able to give as much as they would like. While many people are limited by the realities of a day-today budget, some planning today makes it possible for almost anyone to do more in the future. Winston Churchill left us with a legacy for life that has brought enormous benefit to future enerations. For more information on how you can leave a lasting legacy, please contact Weber State Universitys gift planning office at 501-626-6568. The most frequent gifts made in a will or trust include: -Fixep Bequest: A gift of a fixed dollar amount to a family member, friend or charity. - SPECIFIED PERCENTAGE: Dividing an estate by percentages, leaving specific portions such as ro percent or 20 percent to be divided among a list of recipients. -GiFT oF A SpEcIFIc Asset: Gifts of a parcel of real estate or a block of stock can help fulfill a desire to give to family, friends or charity. * RestpuaL Girt: Specific bequests are often given to family members, and the remainder of the estate is divided equally among a variety of charitable causes. -Girt In Trust: There are a number of appropriate ways to leave a gift in trust. For example, a trust can provide a surviving family with income for life with the remainder going to charity after the death of the survivor. Alternatively, a trust may provide income to charity for a prescribed number of years with the remainder ultimately going to a family member. the university's needs and direct its resources to where theyIl have the greatest impact.” The council has conducted campus meetings to gather input from a large number of university employees. With that information, along with input from the universitys National Advisory Council, the WSU Davis Advisory Council, the WSU Alumni Association board, college deans, department chairs and student leaders, the council created the document “Looking Forward: Planning Strategically for Weber State University in 2030, which contains the following vision for the institution: WSU Vision Statement This fanciful story, written by Jennie Groberg as she prepared to graduate in 1906, proved far more accurate than she could have realized. Half a century later, Weber College made the move from downtown Ogden to the hillside above Harrison Boulevard as school leaders envisioned and planned for the future of the growing institution. Now, another half-century later, Weber State University is engaged in another visionary mission: looking forward to the year 2030. What should the university be at that time? What will be the institution's goals and priorities? And how do we get there from where we are today? In 2006, the Weber State University Planning Council began asking these questions and determining action steps to help the university reach those goals. The council, made up of faculty and staff members from across the university, studies higher education trends across the state and nation, using the information to help determine which areas the university should concentrateon | nal aoSpay es SS oeeee One Weber State University is an exceptional comprehensive university providing associate, bachelor’s and master's degrees to meet the needs of the region. When I was young, | was very shy and so desperately wanted to believe that magic was real,” he says. “| remember the first time I was taken into the magic shop, the man behind the counter could do amazing things with ropes and blades and colored sticks and strings. “T politely asked, ‘Is magic real? And he quickly quipped, Yes, and you can learn how to do it for $7.95. I spent several weeks of savings only to find that it was ... a trick. | had been fooled. The finger chopper wasnt real magic; it was merely a trick blade.” Yet something compelled Draper to stick with it, to practice the tricks and memorize the patter that went along with them, until he got up the nerve to try them on his classmates on the playground. “At that moment, when I saw the amazement in their eyes, I realized that it wasnt just a trick, he says. Instead, I found in that singular moment, in the sharing of the experience and wonder—in that moment, it was real magic. He continued reading and learning, becoming more drawn to entertaining as his knowledge and confidence grew. He performs for high rollers in hotel suites, and for conferences and special events. That job, however, only makes up “about an eighth of the work he does in his hectic entertaining career, Draper says. In December, he ll retire as associate vice president of human resources. When asked what his favorite part of the job has been, he doesnt hesitate. “Absolutely the people.” Greenhalgh oversees several areas, including compensation management, employment, HR policies and procedures, and the universitys training and development and wellness components. Additionally, his staff maintains the university's legal employment status, and hes a consultant to employees and supervisors on human resources issues. When Greenhalgh was hired, he was charged with providing the growing institution with consistent HR methods. “Because the personnel functionat Weber State was a new entity, I had to start something where very little formal process existed, explained the former adjutant general officer for the U.S. Army. And he did just that, while seeing Weber State double in students and increase its faculty and staff by significant numbers. He also saw the institution switch to computer technology. “I decided to get a computer programming degree because the technology was so new that I needed to know what was going on, he said. Later, he and an information technology professor developed compensation software that was used nationwide. In his opinion, however, his greatest work has been building a professional and innovative team that supports the campus. “Theres no way I could have succeeded in such a large task or maintained the changes that have taken place in 30 years without an exceptional staff, he said. “Stan has made WSU a great place to work,» said Cherrie Nelson, associate director of human resources. He treats all of his colleagues in HR with respect. As an English professor who teaches English education, he looks for that same enthusiasm in his students. “One of my biggest goals is that students leave here prepared to be excellent English teachers," he said. “Part of that is making sure they feel like they ve chosen the correct career and are excited about teaching English.” Dohrer earned his doctoral degree at the University of Texas at Austin in 1989 and joined the faculty of Weber State College that same year. His publications in nationally renowned journals have earned him the reputation of a leading thinker on state-of-the art teaching strategies. Dohrer also was one of the architects of an innovative site-based teacher program during the 1ggos. Primarily for English education students, it put Department of English faculty in the local schools every day and gave teachers a more active role in planning their student teachers education. Although that program no longer exists, Dohrer has brought another cutting-edge idea—the National Writing Project—to campus. The newly created WSU chapter has the potential to greatly improve writing instruction in local school districts by hosting a summer institute for teachers and encouraging them to conduct project-sponsored activities in their own schools to develop teacher knowledge and improve student achievement. “Our goal is to eventually have every teacher in these local districts involved on some level, so they can see their students become more successful,» Dr. Gary Dohrer K. Stan Greenhalgh Dohrer said. Dohrers contributions to WSU are considerable. He has been chair of the Faculty Senate and worked with the WSU Alumni Association as a member of the board of directors. He also served as chair of the English department for two terms. Off campus, he leads a writing workshop for veterans at Hill Aerospace Museum. | “Professor Dohrer provides the university with an extraordinary sense of leadership, stewardship and commitment, said his colleague, Michael Wutz. “We are honored to have him in our midst.” < < x <sa w es} = tH o q —_ WSU Associate Vice President Dr. Gary DOHRER SN K. Allof the above If you answered “D,” you were either a student of Walter Buss, or you've heard of his legendary field trips. For those who havent, Buss taught geology and geography at Weber College (and later Weber State College) from 1933 to 1974. His field trips, or “Buss Trips, were designed to make learning more enjoyable. Starting out with small jaunts to Ogden and Weber canyons, Buss later planned longer journeys to Zion, Bryce and Arches national parks, among other picturesque spots. Students would pile onto school buses or take cars, camp, and cook out or picnic. CRITTENDEN For example, attended Weber 60s, remembers boys with water of course—after him in their car. alumna Esther Phelps Jackson, who in the early 1950s and again in the the time Buss doused some of the from his canteen—good-naturedly, they had gotten too far ahead of “When we caught up to them, they were acting like they were napping on the side of the road,” she explained, “so Dr. Buss snuck up and poured water all over them. “Oh, how they hooted and hollered! They were good sports about it, but nobody laughed harder than ‘Uncle Walt.’ They saluted him, got back in their car, and stayed behind us the rest of the trip.” While each of Buss’ students has a different story about the field trips, they all remember his passion for geology and geography. “He was a knowledgeable geologist,” said Ralph McEntire 56. “I remember going to Ogden Canyon and learning about the various rock formations. He also learned to take the teacher seriously: “When Dr. Buss said we were going hiking, he wasnt kidding. I remember a lot of sore feet, but we had fun and learned a lot.” Walter Buss passed away in 2000, but his Their days were filled with traveling, hikes, lessons and mishaps such as a broken-down bus. Nights were filled with songs and stories. memory lives on in his students. “He was a great “T remember wed do just about anything,» said Marjorie Andelin Crittenden 42, recalling he said, recalling one trip when a student had to be Sometimes there was even a little harmless mischief. He was always teaching.» Pat Olsen Schneiter 56 remembers that about the professor, too. “There was never a dull moment," she said. “Dr. Buss would sit at the front of the bus and point out interesting things over the microphone. Even when the bus would stop, we'd have fun. We'd get out and often dance the ‘Virginia Reel. “The school at that time really was very small. We felt like just about everybody was a close friend, man, said Schneiter. Warren Buss ’57, the professor's son and student, couldn't agree more. “Dad was a caring individual, rushed home with appendicitis. “Dad went back later to check on her, and when he realized she hadn't told her parents about her condition, he did. They got her to the hospital just in the nick of time. “T couldn't be more proud of my father.” Amy Hendricks, University Communications oe ae _ In ‘91S LGL “ON JWad q V7, d = VLC) ‘Nado NaddQ HYL() SCOb-80Pr8 ATOUID ALISUAAINA) SZ(P SNOLLVOINQWWO‘) XLISUAAIN() ALISUMTAIN() ALVIS Waa, : oe Toe Pe ean (les 1) Sew ALO | Soran Eriol S 0 ae vauR era rt See a eee] Mol Palen soslon)-y] JOoyds ASM eas a PRUE ony Avia) ae irc reresile) ua yoed slehe a) Ho) oS oes SLE Oona] oe ul at onthe aE ie retort STONE =I soe WAR aseysa|daays . io Re eean BOTohS) ha To OL Le Cp Nn er acc oats or rm : ce | JOVLSOd ‘SN ‘B19 1yoO1d-uoN NOLONIATId 1NWd Ad eee ate |
