GOI ~~ IMPROVING COMMUNITY HEALTH WILDCAT Sidelines | wsu atatetics — ‘PLAY BALL’ HALE HEADS TO NFL The university announced plans to add women's softball as an NCAA sport beginning in the 2009-10 season. Plans call for hiring a coach by this summer, giving the coach a full year to recruit and establish a team. Offensive tackle David Hale was selected by the Baltimore Ravens in the fourth round of the NFL draft on April 27, moving into the professional ranks after an outstanding college career at WSU. The Wildcats will begin play as an independent team with the intention of Joining a conference in the near future. In Utah, WSU will be the sixth NCAA Division | school fielding an NCAA team, Following his senior season, Hale was named First Team All-America (Division FCS) by the American Football Coaches Association—one of only two players from the Big Sky Conference to be honored. He also was named Second Team All-America by the Associated Press. 2 SMART 'CATS A total of 36 WSU student-athletes were honored by the Big Sky Conference and named to the 2007 Fall Academic All-Conference list. The list consists of athletes in football, volleyball, soccer and men’s and women's cross country. As head coach of the mens golf team, he led the Wildcats to back-to-back Big Sky Conference Championships in the 2000-01 and 2001-02 seasons. However, the team went the next five seasons without a conference championship—because it didnt have a conference to compete in. When Portland State and Eastern Washington ended their men’s golf programs in 2002, the Big Sky dropped under the required number of teams for a conference. That meant WSU couldnt compete in a conference tournament and couldnt receive an automatic berth in the NCAA Championships. “They were years that we were in limbo, Kearl says. “They were kind of like lost years.” Finally, the Wildcats found a new conference home last summer, joining the newly formed America Sky Mens Golf Conference. The other schools competing in the America Sky are Binghamton University, University of Hartford, Idaho State University, University of Texas-Pan American, University of Northern Colorado, Utah Valley State College and University of California, Sacramento. “We now have an opportunity not only to have a conference championship, but for the winner to qualify for the NCAAs, which is a huge thing for teams at our level,’ Kearl says. In 2005, the Wildcats put together an excellent season but were unable to receive one of the few at-large bids available into the NCAA Championship. It was at that point Kearl knew he needed to get WSU back in a conference. The idea for the America Sky came about when Kearl spoke with Hartford mens golf coach Bill Poutre at a tournament. Poutres team was in the same situation, without a conference to compete in, and he knew some of the details of how to form a single-sport conference. After a year of paperwork and getting approval from individual universities, the America Sky was formed. The name of the conference is a combination of Hartford's former conference, the America East, and WSUss former conference, the Big Sky. Binghamton also competed in the America East, while Idaho State and Sacramento State had competed in the Big Sky. The Wildcats won this season's inaugural conference tournament in September, held at Valley View Golf Course in Layton, Utah. But according to NCAA rules, the conference must exist for two years before gaining “automatic qualifier status into the national tournament. Even though the Wildcats wont be at the NCAA Championship this year, Kearl says simply competing in the conference will help the team, especially in recruiting. When the team was competing independently, it was hard to attract athletes because they knew they werent going to have a chance to go to nationals. Now, with other teams in Utah playing in very difficult conferences, the Wildcats have a good chance at competing for recruits. “We can go out to recruit and say ‘Hey, were back in business,” Kearl says. “We probably have a better chance than any other school in the state of Utah to make it into the NCAAs.” Jonathan McBride, University Communications Yes WISUONLINE STUDENTS IN JOELLEN JONSSON’S ONLINE SECTION of Sales and Service Technology (SST) 2383 listen to the same lectures she gives in the classroom. Shes also one of five full-time employees of WSU Online who work with faculty to ensure the quality of courses offered online. A Decade of Growth In fall 2007, WSU Online marked its roth year of providing online instruction. The program has seen CO WSU MAGAZINE | Spring 2008 exponential growth, from 77 students in fall 1997 to more than 10,000 students today. When online education was introduced, many faculty members and students viewed it as a fringe activity. Today it is part of the academic mainstream, accounting for 16 percent of course offerings at WSU. This trend is mirrored nationally. The Sloan Consortium, a group of institutions committed to quality online education, began collecting data on online course enrollment in 2002. Since then, online enrollments have grown substantially faster than overall higher education enrollments, representing 20 percent of students—about 3.5 million—in fall 2006. Gail Niklason, director of online education and e-learning, believes three factors have contributed to the rapid growth and success of WSU Online: student demand, awareness and the availability of cheaper computing connections. Tamara Chase, an associate professor of nursing who led the WSU Online team in 1997, has watched online education evolve. “In the early days, the primary technology was static Web pages, she says. Instructors put their syllabus, handouts and assignments online.” By 2001, courses had online grade books, discussion tools and bulletin boards for posting comments. But few audio and video tools were available because most students connected through a dial-up modem. The pedagogy and demand for online courses changed substantially when broadband and DSL connections became available in homes and businesses. Today, students can hear lectures created with Wimba voice tools or see demonstrations that are videotaped in the classroom. They can interact with classmates and the instructor in writing or through audio and video streams. scheduled ‘seat time’ with online content, along with Web-enhanced courses or face-to-face classes that use online tools, she says. Why Online? Zach Hansen, a 2007 communication graduate, completed his SST minor and some of his generaleducation requirements online. Altogether, he took about 10 courses through WSU Online. “I liked the flexibility,” he says. “I could do assignments before or after work; there was no set time schedule." The 2007 Sloan Consortium study found that improving student access is the most often cited objective for online courses and programs. Additionally, universities that have large numbers of online courses report higher percentages of students completing their degrees. Both Niklason and Chase have heard WSU students say that without online education, they wouldnt be able to go to school. Online and hybrid courses are often used in the field of health professions to bring education to rural communities. The associates degree program in nursing provides textbook instruction online, but students complete clinical requirements in their own community. Rural students with an associates degree can complete the entire baccalaureate program online. “When nurses leave a rural community to be trained, often they dont go back to that community, Chase explains. “With online education, more nurses get training and stay in these small towns.” Lauren Fowler, professor of psychology, notes another advantage of teaching online: greater international diversity. Shes had students from China, Korea and Japan in her online PSY 1o10 course. “Online courses provide an opportunity for international students to get an education at an American university. It's a lot less expensive for them because they dont have the cost of traveling to the United States,” she says. U.S. military personnel stationed in [rag and Afghanistan also have taken her course. One summer, when she and her students were lamenting about the record heat in Utah in an online bulletin board, another student wrote to say it was 130 degrees where he was stationed in Iraq that day. “He put it all in perspective for us with that comment, Fowler says. Online education does have critics who think the quality of education suffers in an online format. In reality, Niklason says, that’s not the case. “Research shows that learning outcomes are generally similar in online compared to face-to-face instruction. In some cases, online education is superior.» “Some students think online classes are easier, Fowler says, “but they are actually more challenging for a lot of students because they have to take responsibility for learning the material on their own.” When she teaches the same course online and in the classroom, Fowler often finds that online students questions are more thoughtful and informed. Hansen performed better in online courses than traditional ones. “There's no excuse for missing class,” he says. “Even when | went out of town, I was able to do my assignments early and be on track when | returned.” Also, he notes, his personality probably played a role. “I’m quiet, he says, “I do better in small groups or on my own than in large lectures.” Jonsson has found no significant differences in the test scores between her online and in-class sections of SST 2383. But, she says, the quality of an online course can affect student performance. “The best courses are those where the instructor invests time to create a variety of learning opportunities for students, like creating an open community featuring discussion boards and chat rooms." While creating an online course takes more time initially, Jonsson believes the new teaching tools created for online education are worth the effort. In February, she added a set of Study Mate learning activities to her class, starting with module to. ‘Two days later, she got the following e-mail from a student: “We've seen Just to let you know the new review games in Mod 10 are awesome! classes that use more instructors creating hybrid courses, replacing scheduled ‘seat time’ with online content, along with Webenhanced courses or face-to-face online tools.” I took my book with me last week to Hawati (my wife and I went for the week), and when I got back Monday I logged on to start my review and am feeling a little more caught up and back on track. While he doesnt regret his hard work to stay in school, he and Nora realize how much a scholarship could have helped them back then. “Weber was so good to me that I thought we could make it a little easier for someone else, Ron says. “Fortunately, we are in a position to do something.” He and Nora are using the benefits from their good decisions along life's road to help WSU students earn their degrees. The Axtons have not only endowed a scholarship with current gifts; they also have established a trust that will add to it after their deaths. Countless future students will benefit from their planning and generosity. Ron and Nora retired in 1990 from Hill Air Force Base. In 2007, initial funding for the institute was made possible through a generous: lead gift from Richards and his wife Annette. The goal for the institute, according to Department of Political Science and Philosophy chair Frank Guliuzza, is to promote ethical behavior in politics and offer democracy training for potential candidates and delegates, as well as engage students politically. “Our priority is to put together practical training for people who want to be involved in politics, he said. ways the institute plans to do this, including training exercises and events, a series of speakers who are political practitioners, and citizenship seminars. Through the institute, there also will be ree for student internships and faculty fellowships. Although the institute is still in its infancy, it already has held its first events. Last December, the institute hosted a symposium focused on “Decency in the Political Arena: Is it Really the Exception and Not the Rule?” More than roo people braved a snowstorm to attend the event, where former U.S. Congressman Jim Hansen delivered the keynote address. The symposium also included panel discussions with political pollster Dan Jones, Salt Lake County Councilman Randy Horiuchi and Richards. Under the institutes direction, the symposium is scheduled to become an annual event. Assistant professor of political science Leah Murray participated in one of the symposiums panel discussions and feels that these types of events will benefit everyone involved. “The institute has the potential to benefit the university and higher education with advocates in prominent political roles who have been trained at Weber State, she said. “It will benefit democracy by helping more people become engaged in the political process, and it should also benefit our students by giving them access to politicians and speakers with a prominent role in government. | Guliuzza feels the political training sessions and ethics discussions are a good starting point for citizens interested in becoming involved in politics. “Ultimately, this is designed for the successful person who wants to run for office but doesnt know how or even what steps to take. We'll teach them how to be a good candidate or delegate, he said. Travis Clemens, University Communications The Institute for Politics, Decency and Ethical Conduct will offer: CITIZENSHIP SEMINARS: The institute will offer seminars on how to get things accomplished in the community and become part of nonpartisan public service groups. DELEGATE AND CANDIDATE TRAINING: Working with WSU students, staff and faculty members, the institute will hold events designed to train the community on how to be successful in the political arena. POLITICAL SPEAKERS SERIES: Through the institute, WSU will offer the community the opportunity for citizenship development and democratic learning. The series will include local, state and national leaders. SUMMER SEMINARS: Trips to Boston, New York City, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., will provide students with historical perspective and a front-row seat to learning about current legislative, executive and judicial politics. And for Justus Randolph, it's true—although his “vacations” might include soccer-playing robots, talking teddy bears and playgrounds that exercise the body and mind. Randolph is a researcher at the University of Lapland in Rovaniemi, Finland. The city, located near the Arctic Circle, is known as the European home of Santa Claus, and the Northern Lights often shine overhead. As a contract researcher who usually studies educational technology, Randolph often works on two or three different research projects each year. “The variety keeps me motivated,” he says. The research work also fits Randolph's personal proclivities. “T love puzzles, he says. “At home, I solve mechanical puzzles. At work, I solve cause-and-effect puzzles. I collect data, I match patterns, [ build explanations. I really have a lot of fun.” Oo WSU MAGAZINE | Spring 2008 And when he says fun, he means it: His current project involves research and development on an “educational intervention based around a technology-enriched playground. “The intervention blurs the line between exercise, play and learning, he says. “For example, students might practice multiplication by playing games on a life-size, interactive multiplication table. Our hope is that students will learn more, have more fun and get more exercise all at the same time.” The research requires a hands-on approach. “A few weeks ago, | was with a bunch of Spanish school principals and professors in a large radiation bunker where a prototype of the playground was built. We played like schoolchildren for hours,” he says. “How could you not love this job?” His question begs another: How did he get there? Randolph practically grew up at Weber State—he was born across the street, and his grandmother, Ruth Knight, was an administrator at the college. He entered the school’s Early College program as soon as he was old enough to drive. “I was bored and frustrated with high school, he says. “Weber State was exactly what I needed.” He pursued a Bachelor of Integrated Studies degree in English, art history and philosophy—an unusual combination for someone who now researches technology. Randolph explains: “My primary interest has always been understanding the human condition. During my Weber State years, I pursued that interest through the humanities. | still pursue that interest— but now, as a social scientist, | take an empirical approach. It pays better.” After graduating, Randolph landed a job teaching English in Czestochowa, the religious capital of Poland. “As weird as it sounds, I had a hankering for the cold and snow, the grey, the bleak blocks of flats,” he says. “I wasn't disappointed.” After completing his three-year teaching contract and master's degree in 2001, Randolph returned to Utah for doctoral studies in education research and evaluation. In 2003, he received a Fulbright grant to do research in Finland. “I've been in Finland ever since,” he says. “I met a nice girl and ended up settling down. Finland is a great place to live—there are 2.5 million saunas in a country of only 5 million people. In his highly varied career, Randolph says his favorite experiences have come in working with children. “Kids totally surprise you with what they can do, he says. “I've seen young kids build and program sophisticated robots. I've seen them plan, lead and evaluate complex projects. “T believe that if you give youngsters the right amount of instruction, respect, responsibility and authority, they are capable of just about anything.” Those encounters inspire Randolph, and he wants his work to be a valuable contribution to the world. “I hope to improve education and to be part of the effort to provide education universally, he says. “Through advances in technology we have the capability, and duty, to economically provide all students with high-quality individualized education. The trick is to harness technology in such a way that it doesnt diminish our humanity. Jennifer Philion, University Communications snnual H. Aldous Dixon Awards th John H. Knight Dr. Marie L. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in medical technology from the University of Utah and joined the faculty of Weber State College in 1973. And just as her mother advised, she became a leader. Kotter not only helped build WSUss clinical laboratory sciences (CLS) program—a program that is now one of the largest and most renowned in the nation—she also became the universitys first female vice president. When she was hired, Kotter was one of very few female faculty members. She was the only woman to serve on the faculty senate executive committee, and her involvement would lead to amazing opportunities. In 1981, two years after earning her doctoral degree in educational psychology from the University of Utah, Kotter became Weber State’s assistant vice president for Academic Support. She was the first woman to ever hold such a high position in the state higher education system. Five years later, she became the vice president of Student Affairs. Student Affairs was a new division at the college, and Kotter said it was similar to building the first CLS program. “My colleagues and I had to define the division and bring areas together that had never been together before.” Under her direction, Student Affairs became a model for other universities across the nation. Many of Kotter policies and processes are still in use today. After 12 years as vice president, Kotter returned to the Dr. Ezekiel R. Dumke College of Health Professions to teach in the Department of Health Sciences. A breast cancer survivor, she counts her blessings every day. WSU is among them. “This university allowed me to maximize my gifts. It's magic here.” It only takes one look at the former Wildcat'’s résumé to see the truth in that statement. In his 35 years at Weber State, Knight served at one time or another as assistant professor of physical education, director of Campus Recreation, acting dean of students, acting director of the Shepherd Union Building, supervisor of the Student Health Center, and executive director of student life, the position he held when he retired in February. A self-described “man with a servants heart, Knight also served on a variety of committees, boards and councils. “Service is the key in anything I’m involved with, and I tried to model that with my leadership style, he said. While Knight had numerous responsibilities over the years, overseeing Campus Recreation was one he enjoyed for more than three decades. Today, the well-respected, comprehensive program includes Wilderness Recreation, group fitness classes, intramural sports, and nationally competitive, non- NCAA club sports. From day one, Knight worked to build a program that promoted not only fitness but also interpersonal relationships, critical thinking and lifelong learning. “Today we have about 100 students working for Campus Recreation. It provides great learning experiences that they can transfer to their future careers and a great environment to make lifelong friends, he said. In 1998, Knight transitioned into the position of executive director of student life, adding housing and residence life to his list of responsibilities. He helped lay the groundwork for WSU's University Village, and he increased the number of student rooms in Promontory Tower. Today, both UV and PT are full. Looking back, Knight said it was the little successes heIl always remember ... -a smile on a student's face when he just scored a point during an intramural contest, or when students return from the Mt. Dee Events Center director Jody Lake joined the Staff in 1980 and has witnessed most of the facility's history. “After all these years, I'm still awed by the vision, dedication and hard work of the people who helped create this facility,’ Lake says. “With Its great sight lines, amazing acoustics and ability to accommodate a variety of events and gatherings, we really are so lucky to have a venue of this caliber on our campus." Dean Hurst and Dale Gardner were the cochairmen of the fundraising drive to build the facility in the early 1970s, when the fan base for the men’s basketball program was quickly outgrowing the seating capacity of Swenson Gymnasium. “From the beginning we envisioned a multiuse facility, one that would accommodate the growing fan base the Wildcat basketball team was attracting and at the same time offer the community a venue similar to the Salt Palace that could host conventions, concerts and other events,” Hurst says. Today, we continue to enjoy the benefits of that original vision, as the center Is used by both the university and community for a wide variety of activities.” Over the years, the Dee Events Center has been the site of a circus, tennis and wrestling matches, gatherings by religious groups, high school basketball championships and a presentation by acclaimed poet Maya Angelou, not to mention commencement exercises for WSU and area high schools. Premiere facility is an overused phrase in this industry, Lake says, “but people still tell me on a consistent basis how beautiful they think the Dee Is." uit John Kowalewski, University Communications NGA" MAPA N MMM IN 1977, JIMMY CARTER WAS IN HIS FIRST YEAR AS president, ABC televised the groundbreaking N WW | CHUA In ‘91S LSL ON PUed a, eel e e es = Se a ie ¥ CiVd JOVISOd 'S'N ‘Bic 1yo!d-uoN =" ain eS I eae ermrenronasnis See a!
