The simulator had fallen into disrepair and had been removed from display. The students spent two semesters retrofitting the simulator, replacing the old hardware, including an antiquated analog computer, and updating It so the flight controls would interface with a modern flight simulation program. The restored simulator is part of an interactive exhibit that allows visitors to experience what it was like to fly a WWil-era aircraft. The students raised funds by raffling a children's playhouse they built from materials donated by local businesses. During fall semester, nearly 60 students volunteered more than 500 community service hours to help Habitat efforts along the Wasatch Front. Two FOR THE RECORD BOOKS Some old TV antennas, two computers and plain old determination helped a group of WSU telecommunication students set an unofficial world record — twice. Assistant professor Ken Cuddeback challenged his students to top a Polish company’s world record of 68 miles for wireless computer communication. Using a radio transmitter with limited range, the students modified the old antennas and used a few off-the-shelf items to expand each computer's reach. In December, the students successfully transmitted information from a computer near the Golden Spike Historical site at Promontory, Utah, to one in Magna, more than 71 miles away. Buoyed by their achievement, they topped their own record less than a week later, connecting a machine at Promontory Point with one at Point of the Mountain — a distance of 82 miles. SN WILDCATS Sidelines | wsu atHtetics — RIGHT: Nan Holyoak, media pioneer and Wildcat fan WoMEN’'S ATHLETICS ACHIEVE FULL-COURT In her final year at WSU, Nan Holyoak was overwhelmed by media requests for information about the school’s highly successful women’s basketball team, which was traveling to the women's NCAA tournament. But, she notes dryly, it was not always so. “The local paper here was terribly hard to break into because the (sports) editor at the time wouldn't give you two cents for women's sports,” said Holyoak, Weber State University's recently retired associate sports information director. “He once said to me, ‘| wouldn't come to a women's basketball game if you paid me to."" Randy Hollis ‘74, longtime sports columnist, writer and editor at the Ogden Standard-Examiner, remembers that remark, and that attitude. Hollis was just a few years into his 31-year career at the Standard-Examiner when Holyoak started pitching women's sports stories to the paper. “His (former sports editor) generation © WSU MAGAZINE | Spring 2004 didn't believe girls should even be competing,” Hollis recalls. “Journalists sat back and said, ‘Let's see how they do first before we start devoting a ton of coverage to them.”" Chris Miller '86, the StandardExaminer's current sports editor, started working as a reporter at WSU's Signpost in the late 1980s. Though the ideas of PRESS most reporters had evolved by then, shreds of the old attitudes persisted. “| think at that time the tone was still like, you'd call them ‘Wild Kittens’ instead of ‘Wildcats,"" he said. “There was still a bit of a condescending attitude about women’s sports.” TITLE IX OPENS Doors Holyoak takes pride in knowing she helped change those attitudes. In 1972, the window of opportunity for female collegiate athletes — and, as it happened, for Nan Holyoak — was cracked open by Title IX. Essentially, the federal legislation required universities to support women’s athletics — with funding, staff and facilities — at a rate proportional to men’s sports. Suddenly, universities had to have women's sports. And they had to have someone to promote them. “| knew with Title IX there would be a demand for women on this level, because women's sports were starting to be recognized and funded," said Holyoak. But she quickly ran into a full-court press of opposition. “They were having (women’s sports) because they had to; if they didn't, the school would lose a lot of federal funding,” she said. “There weren't that many scholarships, so it was hard to recruit; it was hard to hire coaches." THE NUMBERS GAME Holyoak started by compiling meaningful summaries of women's athletics. Although women's sports started at WSU in 1974, the best records Holyoak found when she arrived in 1978 were rosters and notations of whether the team won or lost each game. There were no Statistics; not even a game score. So she started attending games, keeping detailed statistics and summaries. Because she was a single mother, her two daughters often were with her: “I've always said they grew up at the Dee Center." Holyoak's efforts resulted in a detailed record of successes, failures and growth for WSU's female athletes. Armed with the facts and figures, she put her offense into motion. But she had to, as she puts It, “step gingerly" with sports editors. Hollis said Nan Holyoak approached that delicate task in just the right way. “She did her job the way it should be he said. "She let us know a game, there's an we'd love to have you come cover the games, these are the athletes that are doing well. She was always there as a source of information." OFF THE BACK PAGE Success for Holyoak in those days consisted of a few paragraphs buried inside the sports section. Broadcast coverage? Forget it. ‘Anything about women's sports would be in the briefs,” she said. “There was hardly ever a picture, and if there was, it was in the back pages. The first time there was a picture (of a women's game) WOMEN’S GAIN Sports GROUND Basketball, gymnastics, softball and volleyball were the first women’s intercollegiate sports at Weber State University, in 1974. Gymnastics was discontinued about four years later. Of the 300 student-athletes today, 40 percent (121) are women. Women's teams exist in: ¢ basketball * cross-country ° golf ¢ indoor track * outdoor track * soccer e tennis ° volleyball on the front page, | did cartwheels down the hall at work." Over time, as more women became college athletes — and the quality of play increased — the spotlight turned more often to the women’s game. Melissa Freigang, WSU associate athletic director and a former student athlete at the University of Utah, believes women's athletics are attracting the interest of more and more sports fans, many of them male. “Once you get fans there you have to give them a good product," she said. Fans need to leave saying, '"Wow, those girls can play. These women are athletes.’ Miller said that by the time he started as a reporter, even the dubious had been convinced there was value to women’s athletics. “| came in when high school girls’ sports was full speed ahead," he said. “We were picking girls’ and boys’ (all-star) teams almost equally. ... Title IX helped: some recognition of equality helped. | think the growth of women’s sports is a reflection of the growth of girls’ sports. Grassroots participation really pushed it." STILL LEVELING PLAYING THE FIELD Miller acknowledged that college men’s sports still receive much more coverage than women’s events: “We still reflect the community in that there are 6,000 people at men's basketball at WSU, and 600 at women's basketball.” That frustrates Holyoak, who feels women's sports still deserve more. “The coverage wasn't as good as | would like it,” she said with typical tartness. “| had it put to me that when women's teams start putting 6,000 fans in the seats like the men do, they'll get the same coverage men do." Hollis, the father of four sports-playing daughters, doubts that more press coverage would significantly change attendance at women's events. Yet he suggests that a look at high school girls’ sports might reveal a bright future for women’s college athletics. “(High school) girls’ sports are gaining in popularity, which you can't say of high school boys’ sports,” he said. Holyoak, who remains a WSU fan in retirement, is similarly hopeful. “People in sports departments realize now It’s not going to go away," she said. “Looking at demographics, there are not as many women fans. But men are becoming more interested. We have a big fan base of men for women's basketball. If the teams can stay successful, their fan base will grow." It has taken the WSU mock trial team less than a decade to pile up this much hardware. The program was created in 1995 by political science professor Frank Guliuzza, who serves as director and coach. Over the past 14 years Guliuzza has become a fixture at WSU, but that in no way means he’s standing still. Chair of the Department of Political Science and Philosophy, he also serves as the universitys pre-law advisor and created an LSAT prep class. He is active in politics and religion. And recently, he was able to add another item to the lengthy list of honors on his curriculum vitae: 2003 Utah Professor of the Year. How does it feel to receive such an honor? Guliuzza says his feelings were well articulated by Carnegie Foundation President Lee S. Shulman at the awards ceremony in Washington, D.C., 6 WSU MAGAZINE | Spring 2004 in November: "He said, ‘I know how you all are feeling right now. Youre feeling 1) I don't really deserve this. There are other people on my own campus, let alone the rest of the state, who are more worthy of receiving this. And 2) I've just begun to earn this. I can do better.” DESERVED DISTINCTION Guliuzza is the first WSU professor to be selected for this honor by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. “It's a wonderful reflection on the university,” says interim provost Kathleen Lukken. “We have many faculty members who are stellar teachers, and it’s very rewarding to have one of them receive this nationally renowned award. ~ Dr. Guliuzza has a keen interest in providing students with challenging intellectual experiences in the classroom, and he also understands that a great deal of learning takes place outside the classroom,” Lukken says, citing Guliuzza’s experience with the mock trial team. HONOR IS NO MOOT POINT “lam amazed every time I think of Dr. Guliuzza’s dedication to his students,’ says Todd Creer ‘03, who is now attending Cornell Law School. “Not only does he do a great job teaching, but he also spends countless hours coaching mock trial, writing letters of recommendation and establishing WSU as a great university. | know working with Dr. Guliuzza in mock trial really assisted making my decision to become a lawyer.” Another former student strongly agrees. “I learned a lot about preparing a case for trial,” says Raven Rivera 03, now in law school at the University of Southern California. “Mock trial and moot court taught me how to think quickly and respond to unanticipated events. | The students arent the only ones who benefit from the program. “I get to work with one of the best collections of students on campus, Guliuzza says. He also has a longtime personal interest in debate — he won a Wyoming state title in high school — and the process fascinates him. “The activity changes your life in that you think a little differently, he says. “Debaters think in series of arguments, rather than one argument at a time. It's like chess: You tend to see three or four moves ahead. The way a composer can hear a few notes and put together a piece of music, youre thinking about how to put together an argument.» conversion changed his life, and he felt called into ministry. Already holding degrees in social science and political science, he completed a Master of Divinity program at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kentucky. Ministering to a small church and having problems finding financial support, Guliuzza turned to his academic background. ‘| applied to the PhD program at Notre Dame and got in. I got a nice scholarship and was able to keep our little church afloat,” he says. “Once I started focusing back on constitutional law, | fell in love with it.” Guliuzzas desire to explore complex issues led him into local politics; he was elected vice chairman of the Utah Republican Party in 2001, after his bid to win Sen. Orrin Hatch’s U.S. Senate seat. “We spent about $5,000 to run around the state in a minivan, he says. “It was a good experience for someone who teaches American government to see the real-world side to party politics.” VIEW Having taught at several different universities around the country, Guliuzza has found that what it takes to make students think often depends upon where he is. “There are times you can advance a discussion by taking the opposite side from whoever is talking, he says. “At some schools, the opposite side is the conservative position; a lot of times here, the opposite side is the liberal position. So I'll take that opposite side, and we engage in a debate.” MIXING POLITICS AND RELIGION Guliuzza, it seems, would have made a great lawyer. In fact, that’s the path he was on before a religious De The combination of teaching and preaching has been a good one for Guliuzza and his wife, Kathy, who stays home to care for the couple's two foster sons. It has enabled us to do exactly what we want to do, he says. “We ve ministered in several states. The Ten Commandments warn against covetous behavior, and the Christian tradition identifies envy as one of the seven deadly sins. vada Ada wo become acceptable? A MMM Today our society does not worry about envy. When we see women and men envying the wealthy and imitating their lifestyles, we write it off as part of the harmless and very American activity of keeping up with the Joneses. In fact, many economists believe that such competitive spending is necessary for a healthy economy. According to this view, envy and the purchasing it inspires are not sinful in the least; they are essential for national prosperity. How did we make the shift in our cultural psyche that allowed envy to WASTE NOT, WANT NOT Although modern Americans take for granted that everyone is entitled to strive, that all individuals have the right to lift themselves up by their bootstraps, to 0 from rags to riches, for much of American history this has not been the case. For centuries, those who wanted to climb the ladder of material success faced strong opposition. In 1651, for instance, the Puritans of Massachusetts Bay passed a law that made it illegal for men of mean condition to wear Gold or Silver Lace, or Buttons... or to walk in great Boots, or for women of lowly station to wear Silk or Tiffany hoods, or Scarfes.... Only the wealthy were entitled to fancy clothes; the poor and middle classes needed to know their place and satisfy themselves with less extravagant fashions. While such regulations gradually disappeared from American law books, the spirit behind them lingered for centuries. By the late rgth century the laws had changed, but attitudes had not. It was still common for ministers, 5 WSU MAGAZINE | Spring 2004 journalists and moral leaders to condemn the envious. American men and women who longed for elegant carriages, fine silk dresses, expensive carpets and grand houses heard again and again that they must keep their desires in check. Ministers and editorial writers lectured that God had chosen each person's social position. To envy, to struggle to rise higher, was to question God's wisdom. Instead the envious were expected to conquer their longings and be contented with what they had. Writers and preachers painted dark portraits of what might happen to those who did not control their envy because they believed the emotion could cause all sorts of moral problems. Some warned that envy might lead to financial ruin if people tried to keep up with their wealthier neighbors. As one journalist put it, many a businessman can trace his downfall to the diamond earrings for which his wife or daughter begged so hard. Other social commentators worried that young girls, their hearts set on glittering jewels or glossy furs they could not afford, might sell their virtue and become prostitutes to satisfy their desires for laces, silks, furs and earrings. She told him, Used courtesy of the publisher. While there was more to envy, there were also new ways to act on the emotion. The mass production of imitation luxury goods allowed the middle and working classes to copy upper-class styles. Imitation silks, laces, sealskin, pearls and a host of other knockoffs began to be offered at low prices. Suddenly it became much easier to own goods like those owned by the wealthy. LOOK LIKE A MILLION DOLLARS While it was controversial to act on envy and buy such imitation goods in the 1890s and 1900s, it gradually became more acceptable to do so after World War |. Psychologists began to argue that envy was a natural instinct; economists came to consider it a useful spur to economic growth; editorialists regarded it as a sign of commendable ambition. A 1923 editorial in the Ladies Home Journal captured the new attitude. The magazine congratulated American women for dressing well. It praised women of humble origins who still managed to dress with style and flair: Whatever their background, they seem all to be inspired with what we are told is a typical and somewhat standardized American desire to “look like a million dollars.” The magazine celebrated the fact that even shopgirls in Salt Lake City were more fashionably dressed than some duchesses in London. Modern advertising, which developed in the 1920s, also helped spread this new view of envy. An ad for Pompeian face cream, for instance, proclaimed, Advertisers and social commentators of the 1910s and 1920s encouraged Americans to pursue whatever it was they longed for. Envy, which 30 years earlier “When asked what covet meant, a young girl replied, ‘not to want other folks’ things, but to get Sears, Roebuck Catalogue and buy for yourself. 999 had been considered a grave sin, was now regarded as an economic stimulant and a force for individual advancement and social progress. A young girl captured the new attitude toward envy. An Alabama minister reported that “a little girl in one of my church schools was asked the other day, What was the Tenth Commandment? The reply was “Thou shalt not covet. When asked what covet meant, she replied, ‘not to want other folks things, but to get Sears, Roebuck Catalogue and buy for yourself.” The new attitude toward spending and envy, which first took shape in the 1gros, survives to this day. Advertisements, movies and television programming admonish us to believe we are entitled to the good things in life, regardless of our class position. Following Sept. 11, 2001, economists and government leaders suggested it was our patriotic duty to spend money as a way to stimulate a lagging economy. Our modern consumer economy depends on commercials, on catalogs, and on Wal-Mart, Sears, Nordstrom and a host of other stores, but it could not function without modern attitudes toward envy and spending that allow, and in fact encourage, us to shop. By Susan Matt, associate professor of history, Weber State University. Matt is the author of Keeping Up With the Joneses: Envy in American Consumer Society, 1890-1930. Ada VaAdAaA MMM Envy became more rampant in the years after the Civil War because the consumer economy was expanding dramatically. During the late 19th century, merchants created elegant department stores that sold all sorts of luxury goods and lured customers off the street with appealing window displays. Those who lived too far from such stores might find the pages of the Sears and Wards catalogs all too tempting. Advertisements in newly created magazines such as the Saturday Evening Post and the Ladies Home Journal also told readers what was fashionable and desirable. And when, in the early years of the zoth century, movies became popular, they, too, sparked envy with their images of happy rich people sporting new clothes, living in luxurious mansions and driving shiny cars. “Dont Envy a Good Complexion, Use Pompeian and Have One. It suggested that the way to cope with envy was not to repress ones longings but instead to act on ones desires. The ad told readers: “Why cast envious eyes at another when all you need to do to have an equally enviable complexion is to use Pompeian MASSAGE Cream yourself?” U1 reminded the envious lower classes that they should know their place and stay in it. Lessons for a lifetime: My Favorite PRoFEsSSOoR Through the years, Weber State University faculty have touched many lives and the tradition of teaching excellence continues today. Below is a sampling of the comments we've received from WSU alumni who wanted to share their memories of their favorite professor. Dr. K. Earl Ericksen Years taught: 1960-1989 Served as chair of the performing arts department for six years. STUDENTS SAY: “We worked hard in jazz band, trying to sound good. Earl taught us to ‘lay back’ on the beat, which is something young trumpet players NEVER want to do. I'm grateful now for this, although he drove us crazy beating it in to us at the time. Rolling, lazy eighth notes are quite tasty in certain kinds of jazz." Skip Musgraves ‘80 “He mingled learning with humor. He surprised us one day on a band tour in Idaho, when we were roller skating, by turning around and skating backwards on one foot. He was quite an athlete. He was and is a genius on swing style, especially Glenn Miller." She has earned several teaching awards, including the Weber State College Presidential Distinguished Professor Award in 1985 and the WSU-Utah Association of Academic Professionals Faculty Governance Award in 2003. Her scholarly interests are sociolinguistics and biological anthropology, the study of the diverse range of physical traits in people. “In the whole country, there are only about 18,000 anthropologists, and it’s very unusual to find Off campus, she has given generously to the community, earning awards from the YWCA (now Your Community Connection) and the Ogden Chamber of Commerce, among others. She has consulted with the WSU INCOME including the bachelor's degree in anthropology. She has served on more than 125 committees and led the university's 10-year Crime Lab and Ogden Police Department, providing initial forensics diagnostics on more than 200 cases. Despite her many roles, Conover ultimately sees herself as a teacher. “You live it, breathe it, sleep it,” she says. “| can't imagine myself not teaching. For me, it's been more than a job — It's a way of life that has given me direction and joy." Conover received the award during a March 8 luncheon. Since 1970 the Dixon Award has been presented annually to a WSU faculty or staff member who has met the needs of students and achieved excellence in his or her career. Henry Aldous Dixon was president of Weber College from 1919 to 1920 and again from 1937 to 1953. Saw ‘ . da 2 9 a ll SeePS You're settling in for a relaxing evening at home: Put on some music, collapse onto the couch and put your feet up. You close your eyes as the music starts, and suddenly, youre at a performance in the Austad Auditorium in Weber State Universitys Val A. Browning Center. The music washes over you: every stroke of the piano keys, each breath the singer takes, the final lingering note that fades to silence — then the applause. You should be clapping! You jolt upright, hands coming together. But wait ... youre in your living room. Such is the magic of recordings made with the IsoMike, an experimental microphone system developed by local businessman Ray Kimber 70 in a close Oo WSU MAGAZINE | Spring 2004 relationship with WSU’s Department of Performing Arts. ~ This whole process started out by questioning both how recordings are made and what theyre made with,” says Kimber, who owns several Ogden companies, including Kimber Kable, Heatshrink.com and DiAural, a loudspeaker research partnership with WordPerfect founder Bruce Bastian. ‘pede Setting the Industry on Its Ear The self-described “techno-geek” was inspired to look into the process because he was disappointed with existing recordings. “If there were better understanding of how to record a live performance, or if it werent so difficult, there would be consistent, good recordings, and there are not,” he says. “They do a great injustice to the work and talent that go into performing the music.” So Kimber devoted himself to the study of recording theory and technology. “I’ve read virtually every book I could lay my hands on that had to do with recording — 50 to 100 books,” he says. “Many of them said the same things, so I decided, ‘Well, if everyone's doing it this way and the recordings dont satisfy me, then I might end up with better recordings, or I might fail in a new way.” Prevailing opinion in the recording industry shows Kimbers efforts are no failure. His presentations at trade shows across the country have led experts to praise lsoMike recordings in Gramophone, Stereophile and The Audiophile Voice magazines. ~ These are people who are hard to please,” says Kimber. “We have had interest and positive comments from the loftiest regions of audio recording for film and broadcasting.” N ° WSU MAGAZINE | Spring 2004 Testing, Testing, 1, 2, 3 In fact, Kimber plans to begin producing and marketing the IsoMike for commercial use within a year. But he never would have gotten to this point, he says, without WSU. As a student, Kimber worked on campus as a stage manager and was familiar with the performing arts department. When he began the IsoMike project four years ago, he thought WSU would provide a good setting. The very nature of this experimentation is that you need good musicians, and they have to be in a learning environment,” he says. “Given the faculty, staff and facility at Weber, I can’t think of another institution that would be better suited.” Those who have attended a musical performance at the Browning Center in the past few years may have seen the IsoMike: an aluminum frame hanging from the ceiling in front of the stage, with a large “heart” suspended in the center. Kimber has made nearly 100 recordings, mostly of WSU choir, band and orchestra rehearsals and performances. “We ve worked together quite a number of times,” says Michael Palumbo, Department of Performing Arts chair and music professor. “It’s been an interesting process, watching the IsoMike evolve.” As a musician, Palumbo is impressed with the recordings. “They are absolutely incredible,” he says. ~The sound — I can’t describe it, other than to say I've never heard anything better.” Plugging into Knowledge So how does the IsoMike manage to produce this incredible sound? Kimber says it has to do with capturing the smallest nuances and details of a performance without disturbance. “If you have a rotating fan, even a small imbalance will cause a vibration,” he says. “You can either remove the cause of the imbalance, or you can cancel it by doing something equal and opposite. It’s much the same with acoustic energy in the air. You have to pay attention to things that would both eliminate it and cancel it. ~ Many records are very loud, because they weren't able to capture the soft parts of the passage. Dynamic range — the contrast between loud and soft — is a very important part of musical expression, and it is processed away during the making of most records. We have found a way to eliminate a lot of the low- | } level cancellation, so that range can be preserved intact all the way to your stereo system. | One of the secrets to his success, according to Kimber, is the unusual heart-shaped baffle section of the IsoMike. Baffles, devices that deflect or regulate the flow of sound waves, are often used in recording. But the size, asymmetrical shape and absorption of this one make it different from anything used before. “The IsoMike is truly a cutting-edge application of recording theory, says Steve Parks, a senior theatre arts major and sound director for the Browning Center. Parks and other members of the technical staff often help set up the IsoMike and stage for recording sessions. He says working with Kimber has been a great learning experience. “Ray is a font of knowledge, even beyond recording, Parks says. “He's always available to answer questions, and he always has something brilliant brewing in the back of his mind. He'll bounce ideas off of us and leave us pondering for the rest of the day. “Being involved in the industry, Ray brings in a lot of exposure to new concepts and technology that we didnt have before. Hes a good resource and mentor; he has bent over backwards to help provide students who are interested in sound with newer equipment and the knowledge on how to use it.” Many of the people who send checks have never heard of Weber State University. “They might not know how to say it, they dont know how to spell it, they ve never been here, says Kimber, “but they think its a wonderful idea. I think they feel comfortable that what their money is being used for is worthwhile.” Kimber hopes to continue his close relationship with WSU and do his part to help it grow. He's working with the performing arts department on establishing a university recording label to take advantage of the lsoMike's amazing sound. “We will start producing CDs for sale, and also choose some of the best of past recordings and issue those, he says. According to Palumbo, the label could be established in the next year. “It involves a lot of preliminary planning, but the paperwork's in place. | think it's a great idea, he says. Kimber is proud of the IsoMike and the partnership he has built with WSU. “I hear from people at the university all the time how happy they are that Im working on projects there. And when they say that, I smile and think, If you only knew how much more I'm getting out of this. It's stimulating, educational and exciting. | feel like I'm truly walking with giants.” BELOW: Kimber observes a rehearsal by music professor Mark Henderson (at piano) and WSU choir members, who have worked on many experimental recordings. Jennifer Philion, University Communications The IsoMike experimentation also has been a valuable experience for music students. “They learn a lot about what goes on in the recording process, just by listening and observing, Palumbo says. “Also, were getting a lot of good publicity, he says, referring to Kimber'ss travels to audio conventions. Harmonic Convergence Ada Yada M MAM oma When asked why he doesnt just have people send him, say, $10, Kimber laughs. “I already have $10,” he says. When people attend a performance at WSU, the price they pay, if any, sustains the music program. But its difficult to grow from there. Having additional donors of all sizes scattered all across the world gives us a sense that everything we do matters in more places than just here and now. N a aia In fact, the lsoMike has brought more than exposure to the university — its brought money. People who want to own samples of the recordings can request a CD of excerpts; Kimber asks that, in return, those people send him a check for any amount made out to WSU. i Xo (en ALUMNI TO vfeytm) RESPOND OE. MAGINE SLEEPING IN A KEVLAR VEST, HEAVY BOOTS AND Army fatigues — on top of your equipment — while the temperature in the desert “cools down’ to 115 degrees at night. Thats how Weber State University student Jessica Richards, a lieutenant in the U.S. Army, lived while serving during the 2003 Iraq war. “Youd drink 1.5 liters of water before going to bed and still wake up thirsty in the morning because you sweated it all out during the night,” she said. “At first about go to 100 of us slept in a tent that was designed for 60." Richards is among a number of students and alumni of the WSU Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) who had to cope not only with enemy forces, but also heat, sand, dust, and separation from family and friends while serving in military hotspots such as Iraq and Afghanistan. Lt. Mateo Chino 02 was part of the 3rd Infantry Division, the first unit to enter Baghdad. He was deployed on March 10, 2003. The war in Iraq started ro days later. It took his division three weeks to reach the city, and he recalled being “just a little nervous” upon entering it. The economics graduate couldnt help but notice evidence of fiscal distress. ~The infrastructure is so old — garbage collection, electricity, water, Chino observed. “Saddam didn‘ take care of things. He had hundreds of beautiful palaces for himself, though.” Once inside Baghdad, Chinos unit quickly transitioned from a war mentality to keeping the peace. “We just patrolled the city, took care of fuel, electricity and water needs for the citizens, and handled domestic disputes. It felt strange going from one mode to the other so fast.” N N WSU MAGAZINE | Spring 2004 Lt. Andrew Lovejoy o2 had a more perilous entrance into Iraqs capital. A member of the 4th Infantry Division, he suffered a crushed right knee on January 5, 2004, when a bomb exploded near the humvee he was riding in and propelled him into the dashboard. That didnt stop him from helping fellow soldiers to assess others’ injuries and secure the area. “We were taken by surprise, said Lovejoy. “It wasnt until that night that I passed out from my injuries. Evacuated to an Air Force hospital in Kirkuk, Iraq, and then sent to a hospital in Landstahl, Germany, Lovejoy arrived at Ft. Carson, Colo., on Jan. 17. REPORTING FROM THE FRONT LINES As Americans back home experienced the Irag war in their living rooms via “embedded” journalists, Maj. Matt Garner go was busy directing military communications in Afghanistan. As public affairs officer for the Joint Task Force 180, Garner supervises 30 Army journalists who publish the Freedom Watch newspaper for coalition forces in Afghanistan, handles media relations and oversees video production. “Tom Brokawss been here and right now we have reporters from The Wall Street Journal, BBC and CNN. R. Lee Ermey from The History Channel's “Mail Call’ is coming,” Garner said during a February telephone interview. “Journalists are still coming here, but Afghanistan was kind of put to the side when the Iraq war started.” Housed at an old Soviet airfield, Garner, a communication graduate and former staff member of WSUss ROTC program, has learned to adjust to life at Bagran Air Base. “We live in a tent with a wood floor and walls. It gets really cold at night and so you have to get fully dressed in the morning just to go to the showers, he said. TRAPPINGS OF THE FAMILIAR While the Middle East and Afghanistan are far from their Utah and Idaho roots, the WSU-produced soldiers find a familiarity in their foreign landscapes. “It's extraordinarily beautiful and rugged, even though everything is really brown, Garner said. “Imagine the Salt Lake Valley without rain for 20 years.” Richards described the landscape of Kuwait as “surreal, almost like a dream. It looked like somewhere in Nevada or the middle of the Utah desert.” If the scenery is similar, so, too, are the people in these far-flung lands, according to Garner. “There's absolutely no difference between us and the Afghanis except their country has been at war for 20 years. Theyre people trying to make a living for their families and put food on the table.” a= iCa Dislavde Kicharn NiICNAaY&das, ae NAatt Ce Ma iV a}. Matt ae ; (,arner Udarnel Garner said one of the more satisfying aspects of being stationed in Afghanistan is seeing the U.S. help rebuild schools there. He attended the opening of an elementary school last fall. For a half-mile the road was lined with children holding flowers. “It was absolutely overwhelming to realize these kids had a decent school.” Movinc ON While they may be back on US. soil, service is far from over for Richards, Chino and Lovejoy. Richards came home from Iraq in late 2003 and returned to WSU in January to finish her last semester toward a bachelors degree in integrated studies. Still recovering from his wounds, Lovejoy expects to regain about go percent of the use of his right leg. He returned to Fort Carson to help re-deploy or relocate U.S. soldiers. In June hell go with his wife, Shanna 92, to Fort Gordon, Ga., for the Signal Transition course to learn communications. Chino is at Fort Stewart, Ga., refurbishing equipment used in the war in Iraq, as well as outfitting soldiers to return to the region. “I dont know if my unit will have to go back, but were prepared to defend, he said. SAVORING THE SMALL THINGS All of these soldiers agree that their recent military service has given them a new perspective on — and appreciation for — the “little things in life.” “| certainly wont take running water for granted anymore, Richards said. “I didnt have a full shower for the first two-and-a-half weeks in Kuwait. We used a lot of bottled water and baby wipes.° Lovejoy said he realized all the things he took for granted, especially my wife, or being able to go eat at a restaurant or have clean water. Also, not having to wear body armor. ° Scheduled to return to the United States in April for a different assignment, Garner said the first thing he'll do is kiss his wife, Karen (Packham) gr. “Then I'm going to change into clothes that are any color except brown.” Ellen Rantz, University Communications FACULTY MILITARY ENLIST EXPERIENCE IN CLASSROOM Col. William Clapp and Lt. Col. Jeff Grunow are among other members of the Weber State University family who have answered the call to serve their country recently. For the last year, Clapp, in the Air Force or its reserve since 1971, was on sabbatical as chief technology officer for the Human Effectiveness Directorate at the Air Force Research Laboratory, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. The professor and head of computer and electronics engineering technology (CEET) oversaw 1,200 Air Force researchers, who equipped fighter planes such as the F22 with the latest technology in ejection systems, pilot's suit and helmet, nightvision goggles and other paraphernalia. “It's been a wonderful experience, Clapp says. Earlier this year Grunow, chair of the Department of Emergency Care & Rescue (ECR), completed 30 days of active service as executive officer for the 445th Aeromedical Evacuation Squad, also at Wright-Patterson. A flight nurse with the U.S. Air Force Reserve for nearly 17 years, he was responsible for the medical transportation of injured soldiers around the United States from overseas. “| do this from a sense of patriotism,” he says. “It's a challenge and very satisfying.” Both professors say their military experience benefits their students immensely. “When | walk into the classroom and talk about these fun projects, the students are on the edge of their seats, says Clapp, who's taken other sabbaticals from WSU for military service during his 31-1/2 years with the Air Force. Grunow says: “The students learn critical thinking — what it really means to treat a patient in an airplane rather than on the ground. It adds a different dimension to their studies." Clapp retired from active duty with the Air Force May 1 and has returned to his post as chair of the CEET department. Grunow returned to the campus Jan. 15 as ECR department chair. JUDGE TURNS LESSONS LIFE'S INTO SOUND COUNSEL Raymond Uno ‘54 has turned hardship into success throughout his life. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941, more than 110,000 Japanese Americans were interned in camps throughout the western United States. Uno, his parents and two siblings were sent to Heart Mountain, Wyo., where his father died nine months later. Upon the family's release in 1945, Uno's mother returned to Ogden. Her job at Esther Hall, Weber College's all-female dormitory, prevented Uno from living with her. He spent his high school years living with a family friend on 25th Street in Ogden, where brawls were commonplace and anti-Japanese attitudes existed. After graduating from Ogden High School, Uno volunteered for military service and was sent to Japan, which was experiencing anti-American sentiment. Still, Uno, now a retired Third District Court judge, views the hardships he endured as learning experiences that taught him the value of hard work and education. He credits his experiences at WSU with influencing his attitudes and philosophy about public service. “I'll always be grateful that Weber was a small school with small classes and an Intimate setting. The professors and football coach encouraged me to try my best." Uno has given his best in his educational and professional experiences, which include an associate's degree and an honorary doctor of humanities degree from WSU. BARRELS TO SUCCESS Tad Schirmer ‘82 may have hit the jackpot when it comes to oil digs, but he bought his ticket at Weber State University. "lam very thankful for my education and experience at WSU: it was there | truly became a geologist and developed as an earth scientist, Schirmer says. In 1986 he began a career with Chevron, and by 1996, he was in his first team leader position in Angola, Africa. He helped discover the deepwater oil field now known as Kuito Field in Block 14. An oil “jackpot,” the field has the potential to produce 1.5 billion barrels total. "| had thought my generation missed out on the chance to make big discoveries in the world — the oil business was seen as mature. But new technological capabilities have given us first crack at the opportunities, and they are tremendous, he says. Schirmer has drilled more than 20 exploration wells, a number of them productive, including the Hunter Creek well near Jackson, Wyo., and the Black Rock well south of Delta, Utah. One of Schirmer's most valuable finds was WSU, where the school and its majestic mountain backdrop created an atmosphere the geology major couldn't resist. "When | moved to Ogden from Connecticut, | was struck by the beauty of the Wasatch Mountains. After visiting Weber | really liked the atmosphere and small school environment,” Schirmer says. “Il had an identity at Weber and wasn't just a number." Now ChevronTexaco's manager of earth sciences in Lagos, Nigeria, Schirmer still thinks of Weber State as the ticket to his success. “It is a blessing to make a living doing something you love and that Is what | have been able to do.
