The nature of its activity is basically experienced-centered, that is, it is not strictly Scriptural-centered, but it makes use of Scripture which may be adapted to the age level of the pupil. A wide range of materials involving nature stories, various types of literature, art and current history are used to supplement the Scripture, all to the end of leading and guiding the pupil into vital and worthful experiences of life with God. In churches where thoroughly trained leaders or instructors are available, the CLOSELY GRADED system can be put over very effectively, because its grading pattern is consistent with the year by year graded system of the publie schools with which children are familiar. The Uniform Ie ne reten sti g8) atin! sate Mestgseseneeee ya ey te ius re are made according to age, appropriate promotion being given to those eligible. Departmental Graded System is by a three year group advance system instead of by single year advance, and in which common Scripture text is adapted to all age levels. Between the closely Graded System and the Uniform Departmental Graded System is the Group Graded, or Cycle Graded System, in which lesson materials are built around the needs and interests of the Departmental group. The problem which church-schools using the closely Graded System have suffered, has been due to the fact that many schools in all of our country have not teachers or leaders sufficiently versatile to teach the system; for example, many small churches, both rural and urban. Another problem is that of limited or inadequate building facilities and equipment with which to carry on the program and achieve the desired results. This statement is not only an acknowledgment as an outgrowth of practical experiences of local churches, but the same is conceded by publishers of this type of literature. However, the Sunday School Publishing Board is J.esson Series, is at present the most practical and adaptable school use. PROMOTION . DAY The last Sunday in September is designated as Promotion Day, when pupils are advanced from one class or Division to another on the basis of age. Age, of the pupil, when figuring for promotion, is considered on the basis of what age the pupil will be on December ist, following Promotion Day. For instance, if a pupil is eleven years of age on the last Sunday in September, but will be twelve before December ist, following, he should be promoted from the Junior to the Intermediate class. Special exercises may be held to mark the progress of pupils as they pass from one class to another, all promotions NURSERY certificates DEPARTMENT The work with babies and small children in the Sunday School offers great opportunities to get into the homes of the community, and enlist both parents and children for the Sunday school. The Sunday school can make its impression on the young child while his heart is tender, and the church can be made aware of its responsibility in caring for even the smallest of children. Nursery Department work may be carried on both at the church and in the home. The work at the church includes the Nursery class for small children. The work in the home includes enlisting new babies for the Cradle Roll and enlisting the parents in parent education through the Nursery Department. A complete outline of the work and activities of the Nursery Department will be found in the CRADLE ROLL DEPARTMENT GUIDE published by the Sunday School Publishing Board. THE HOME DEPARTMENT now studying the possibility of producing a Group Graded Lesson Series. Great care is, therefore, exercised in the effort to secure as closely as possible the grading of the UNIFORM System by the Sunday School Publishing Board. In connection with the Departmental Uniform Graded System, the Sunday School Publishing Board is now supplying supplementary material of pictures, handwork material, visual aids, and other types of techniques, which can be used with our periodicals. This supplementary material will provide the added advantage of making the church school lesson both Biblecentered and experience-centered in the sense of taking the iessons out of the settings or patterns of the past and fitting them into current or everyday experiences of the various age groups of the pupils. The Sunday School Publishing Board, is in opinion with others that the DEPARTMENTAL GRADING in the Uniform for general Sunday THE Trg resto AH iat ~~ The Home Department is primarily directed at those members of the church and community who for some reason are unable to attend Sunday school. Home Department work is considered “temporary,” always looking forward to a person’s return to active participation in the work of the Sunday school. The Home Department can be a connecting link for holding former members in the fellowship of the Sunday school. The Home Department offers many advantages, such as, increasing attendance in the school; furnishing a corps of workers canvassing the area served by the church; comforting and helping invalids; recovering backsliders; developing family religion; increasing church attendance; developing Christian workers; increasing the scope of the pastor’s 1nfluence; and reaching many individuals and families with the Christian gospel, offering a means for evangelism. Home Department work in a Sunday schoo! can be easily begun. The methods are outlined in the Home Department Guide, published by the Sunday School Publishing Board. SPECIAL DAYS Avoid ruts in your Sunday school by observing Special Days. Here are opportunities to make use of variety in leadership, in talent, ability, and to develop such in children, young people and adults. A complete calendar of activities and observances tor the Sunday school will be found in the MANUAL FOR SUNDAY SCHOOLS, published py the Sunday School Publishing Board. These include general observances in the Christian year, special local Sunday school emphasis days, and other emvhases for the Sunday school. Vea. This day, concluding annual family week celebrations, with emphasis on the Christian home, can be made a day of sacred joy. Urge every individual to send a message to mother on this day. Urge every individual to honor mother by attending Sunday school and church, on this day. Mothers and babies may be guests of honor in the Sunday school. Let every one wear a flower on this day. A white flower signifies that mother is dead, and a colored flower that mother is living. Children’s Day—Second Sunday in June. Programs are prepared by the Sunday School Publishing Board which can help make this an attractive and inspiring observance in the Sunday school. Opportunity is afforded to teach the children missions and benevolence, and to sacrifice for others. Father’s Day—Third Sunday in June. On this day, fathers especially are invited to the Sunday school and church. Fathers, too, deserve to be honored. Recognition may be made of the oldest and youngest father, from point of age, in the Sunday school. Fathers should be shown that churches need more man-power, and that they are needed in the Sunday school, and in the Christian education of their children. Other Special School include: Days which should find place in the Sunday Decision Day (Evangelism) Attendance Rally Day Church School Open House Stewardship Emphasis Day Missionary Emphasis Day 3. Officers and Teachers’ Recognition Day Leadership Training Periods, etc., etc. NOTE: See suggested calendar of activities and observances for the guidance of Sunday schools in formulating their own programs, in the Sunday School Publishing Board’s MANUA L FOR SUNDAY THE SCHOOLS. ORIGIN OF THE MODERN SUNDAY SCHOOL Robert Raikes, a printer of Gloucester, England, is credited with initiating in 1780, and promoting what has develop ed into the modern Sunday school movement. His first Sunday school consisted of twelve boys, ragged, dirty and vile, whom he picked up in a mining area in England. His purpose was to teach reading, writing and morals. The Bible early became an important subject in his curriculum, and with the spread of this movement begun by Raikes, Bible teaching became firmly established. By 1783, his work had proved so successful that he advocated the establishment of Sunday schools everywhere. By the time Robert Raikes died in 1811, he had seen his company of twelve boys grow into an army of a quarter of a million boys and girls, men and women, anxious to learn God’s word. The first Sunday school organized in America was started by Bishop Ashbury in 1786, in the house of Thomas Crenshaw in Hanover County, Virginia. In 1793, a Sunday school was organized in New York City by Kate Ferguson, a Negro woman. In 1824, the American Sunday School Union was organized. In 1832, the National Sunday School Convention was organized, which organization inaugurated the Uniform Lessons system in 1872, and in 1875, merged into the International Sunday School Association. In 1922, the International Sunday School Association, together with the Sunday School Council of Evangelical Denominations merged into the International Council of Religious Education. In 1950 this Council became the Division of Christian Education of the National Council of Churches. The Sunday School Publishing Board of the Nationa! Baptist Convention, U. S. A., Inc., is a constituent member of the Division of Christian Education and enjoys all the privileges and relationships of the National Council.
