The nature of its activity is basically experience-centered, that is, it is not strictly Scriptural-centered, but it makes use of Scripture which may be adapted to the age level of the pupil. A wide range of materials involving nature stories, various types of literature, art and current history are used to supplement the Scripture, all to the end of leading and guiding the pupil into vital and worthful experiences of life with God. In churches where thoroughly trained leaders or instructors are available, the CLOSELY GRADED system can be put over very effectively, because its grading pattern is consistent with the year by year graded system of the public schools with which children are familiar. The Uniform _ Pr ee ~~ Departmental Graded System is by a three year group advance system instead of by single year advance, and in which common Scripture text is adapted to all age levels. Between the closely Graded System and the Uniform Departmental Graded System is the Group Graded, or Cycle Graded System, in which lesson materials are built around the needs and interests of the Departmental group. The problem which church-schools using the closely Graded System have suffered has been due to the fact that many schools in all of our country have not teachers or leaders sufficiently versatile to teach the System; for example, many small churches, both rural and urban. Another problem is that of limited or inade facilities and equipment with which to carry quate building on the program and achieve the desired results. This statement is not only an acknowledg ment as an outsrowth of practical experiences of local churches, but the same is conceded by publishers of this type of literature. However, the Sunday School Publishing studying the possibility of producing a GroupBoard is now Graded Lesson Series. : Great care is, therefore, exercised in the effort to secure as closely as possible the grading of the UNIF ORM System by the Sunday School Publishing Board. In connection with the Departmental Graded System, the Sunday School Publishing BoardUniform is now supplying supplementary ‘material of pictur es, visual aids, and other types of techniques handwork material, , which can be used with our periodicals. * This supplementary material will provi de the added advantage of making the church schoo ] lesson both Biblecentered and experience-centered in the sense of taking the lessons out of the settings or patterns them inte current or everyday exper of the past and fitting iences of the various age groups of the pupils. The Sunday School Publishing Board others that the DEPARTMENTAL GRAD, is in Opinion with ING in the Uniform Lesson Series, is at present the most practical and adaptable for general Sunday school use. PROMOTION DAY The last Sunday in September is desig nated as Promotion Day, when pupils are advanced from one class or Division to another on the basis of age. The Sunday school can make its sion on the young child while his heart is tender, impresand the church can be made aware of its responsibility in caring for even the smallest of children. Cradle Roll work may be carried on both at the church and in the home. The work at the church includes the Nursery class for small children. The work in the home includes enlisting new babies for the Cradle Roll and enlisting the parents in parent education through the Cradle Roll. A complete outline of the work and activities of the Cradle Roll wiil be found in the CRADLE ROLL DEPARTMENT GUIDE published by the Sunday School Publis hing Board. THE HOME DEPARTMENT The Home Department is primarily directed at those mem- > bers of the church and community who for some reason are unable to attend Sunday school. Home Depar tment work is considered “temporary,” always looking forward to a person’s return to active participation in the work of the day school. The Home Department can be a connecting Sunlink for holding former members in the fellow ship of the Sunday school. The Home Department offers many advant increasing attendance in the school; furnis ages, such as, hing workers canvassing the area served by the church a corps of ing and helping invalids; recovering backsliders; ; comfortdeveloping family religion; increasing church attend ance; developing Christian workers; increasing the scope of the pastor’s in-| fluence; and reaching many individuals and families with the Christian gospel, offering a means for evangelism.
