Best of all, it’s fun and easy to participate! 7 Eight to fifteen friends, family members, or co-workers form a Relay team. Each participant is asked to raise at least $100 — money that will support American Cancer Society programs of research, education, advocacy, and patient services. Funds are _ raised individually or by teams. To get your fund-raising creativity going, we have included some tips in this handbook. Relays will take place this year in more than 20 communities throughout Utah, and more than 3,000 communities across the nation. Here in the Weber County/Roy area our goal is to raise $35,000! As the Relay begins, teams pitch tents and some even decorate their campsites in the theme they have chosen. Team members bring sleeping bags, food, games, and whatever they need to get them through the 24-hour event. So if you have 12 members on your team, that’s a total of three half-hour shifts of walking for each person. a hi Ae Throughout the evening and into the next day, everyone enjoys entertainment, fun, and camaraderie. Long before walkers have completed their last lap, new friends have been made, old friends have been hugged, and all hearts have been touched by the magic that is the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life. Cancer survivors young and old from the community are invited to begin the Relay by walking the survivors’ victory lap around the track. This opening to the event is a declaration to the community that we are there to celebrate cancer survivorship. A luminaria (candle lantern) ceremony is held at dusk. Lit candles are placed in bags bearing the names of people who have cancer now, or had cancer in the past. A brief program begins the ceremony, then participants light the luminarias. Everyone then takes some quiet time to look at the luminarias and to consider the heartfelt stories behind them. The luminaria ceremony is another visual reminder of why everyone has joined together to support the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life. Light from the luminaria bags glow for team members throughout the night, lighting their way along the track until sunrise. How contributions are spent Cancer research. Research is the American Cancer Society's top priority, because it will ultimately lead to new treatments, prevention, and cures. As aresult of progress in research, the relative five-year survival rate for cancer is now up to 60%. Cancer prevention. Did you know that lifestyle choices, such as avoiding tobacco use and eating right, could prevent more than 380,000 deaths from cancer each year? The American Cancer Society is working to make sure kids grow up healthy by learning how the choices they make can reduce their risk for cancer later 1n life. Early detection. For many types of cancer, finding the disease in an early, highly treatable stage can make the difference between life and death. The American Cancer Society provides checkup guidelines, physician education, and advocacy efforts to make screening tests accessible to all. Comprehensive information, around the clock. The public can access cancer information 24 hours a day, seven days a week, through the American Cancer Society's toll-free information line (1-800-ACS-2345) and Web site (www.cancer.org). Although a great deal of cancer and health information 1s available through the Internet, much of it should be viewed with caution. The American Cancer Society is a dependable resource for accurate, unbiased information. Advocacy. Cancer is very much a political issue, and the American Cancer Society works to make cancer a top priority for lawmakers at the federal, state, and local levels. Smoke-free communities, insurance coverage, protecting cancer survivors from discrimination, and access to health care are some of our most important concerns. Local patient support programs Reach to Recovery — Breast cancer survivors, trained by the American Cancer Society, visit one-to-one with patients to answer non-medical questions and offer practical advice for facing the diagnosis, treatment, and recovery from breast cancer. Special early support is available for women who are facing breast cancer but who have not yet begun treatment. Also a support group is held on the 4" Monday of each month. Man to Man — A local support network for men who have had prostate cancer and their families to get together to share tips, information, and emotional support relating to their experiences. Look Good...Feel Better — Cosmetology volunteers teach women with cancer how to look good and feel better during cancer treatment. Tips on make-up application and wig and turban styling give patients a new sense of hope during this difficult time. Cancer Information Center —Provides books, brochures, videos, and internet access to the American Cancer Society website. Wigs — Wigs are available free of charge from American Cancer Society wig banks. This program serves those who need a wig, but who can not obtain one through medical insurance.
