This professional, co-curricular student organization assists in preparing our students for careers in business. DEX holds these Career Development Conferences (both State and International) each year during the spring semester. The judges will evaluate the 20 marketing/business events during those two days. We anticipate 200-225 students throughout the state of Utah competing in the events. These judges will identify the state winners who will be invited to compete at our International Conference in Nashville in April. The Board of Education of Topeka Kansas. Although tocused primarily on education, this landmark in place case was instrumental in rescinding the legal system of “separate but equal” (Jim Crow Laws) put decision, unanimous Courts’ by the Supreme Court decision in Plessy V. Ferguson (1895). In reading the equal’ Chief Justice Ear] Warren noted that “in the field of public education the doctrine of “separate but has no place. Separate educational facilities are inherently unequal. Although certainly not “a magic wand,” as historian John Hope Franklin notes in 7he Color Line, Legacy for the Twenty-first Century, Brown V. Board paved the wav for America to tear down extant walls of segregation and separation in public places, such as restaurants and restrooms, in its move towards a more “color blind.” democratic society. It eventually gave birth to a Civil Rights Movement, which saw the emergence and leadership of Dr. Martin L. King Jr., and a Black Power Movement, which saw the emergence of Malcolm X and a cultural renaissance called the Black Arts Movement. “With Deliberate Speed’? Upon the 50" Anniversary of Brown V’. Each film will be preceded by a brief discussion. Unchained Memories: Reading from Slave Narratives February 23, 69m, Union Theatre The Federal Writers Project, a division of the New Deal's Works Progress Association, was commissioned during the Great Depression to collect and record memories and archives from the last living generation of African Americans born into slavery. Throughout the 1930s, journalists and writers accumulated stories and photographs from former slaves that would lead to eventual release of "The Slave Narratives of 1936-1938," with over 2,300 first-person accounts of this horrifying period in American history. This documentary project contains 75 minutes of these histories, read by prominent African American actors such as Angela Bassett, Don Cheadle, Ruby Dee, Ossie Davis, Samuel L. Jackson and Oprah Winfrey, and narrated by Whoopi Goldberg. The program also contains many of the archival photographs that were collected in the WPA project. (2002) Rosewood February 24, 69m, Union Theatre Based on a true story, Rosewood takes place in a predominantly black Florida town in 1923. A women in the neighboring town of Sumner, beaten by a lover, falsely claims that a black man assaulted her, thereby providing an excuse for the townspeople to head for Rosewood with rifles and nooses. Ultimately, her lie engenders an unbelievable tragedy that is redeemed only by the heroism of those who endured it. (1997) Tuesday, February 03,2004 America Online: newzionut Page 2 of 3 The Road to Brown February 25, 6pm, Union Theatre The Road to Brown tells the story of the Brown v Board of Education ruling as the culmination of a brilliant legal assault on segregation that launched the Civil Rights movement. It is also a moving and long overdue tribute to a visionary but little known black lawyer, Charles Hamilton Houston ~ "the man who killed Jim Crow." Moving from slavery to civil rights, The Road to Brown provides a concise history of how African Americans finally won full legal equality under the Constitution. Its depiction of the interplay between race, law and history adds a crucial dimension to courses in U.S. History, Black Studies, Constitutional Law, Law & Society, Social Movements and Government. It opens up a discussion of the true significance of the Brown v Board decision on the path toward racial equality. The example of Houston's persistence and determination will inspire today's students to take America further down the long road to social justice. (1990) School Daze: A Spike Lee Joint February 26, 69m, Union Theatre With School Daze, writer-director Spike Lee examines the tensions, biases and frustrations of middle class black youth at a southern college campus. Lee combines musical and fantasy sequences with satirical scenes to tell this pointed story or two cousins who attend the same all-black university. African Americans have upheld the ideals of America, defended our homeland, and enriched American culture and society. Brave leaders such as Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman, Booker T. Washington, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Leon Sullivan caused America to examine its heart and to respect the dignity and equality of all people, regardless of race. Today, African Americans are leaders at the highest levels of the military, business, education, law, government, the arts, sports, and religion. To help share the stories of the millions of African Americans who have strengthened our country, | recently signed legislation establishing the National Museum of African American History and Culture as a part of the Smithsonian Institution. This museum will commemorate the triumphs of African Americans — their determination in overcoming the evil of slavery and discrimination and their many achievements and contributions to our Nation. This year's National African American History Month celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Supreme Court's 1954 decision in Brown v. Board of Education. In that landmark decision, the Supreme Court declared an end to the shameful and unconstitutional practice of legal segregation in schools, ruling unanimously that the Constitution requires all Americans to be treated equally without regard to the color of their skin. The Brown decision transformed America and fulfilled the principles of our Constitution. This year, we remember the brave schoolchildren and parents who challenged segregation. We recognize the legal and moral advocates who paved the way for this decision, including Thurgood Marshall, the heroic lawyer who represented Linda Brown and fought for her rights and the rights of all African Americans. We remember the nine justices of the Supreme Court who helped America begin to make equal justice under law a reality for African Americans. Nearly 50 years after Brown, we are grateful for the progress America has made, but we also recognize that there is still work to be done to ensure that our country lives up to the founding principle that all of God's children are created equal. NOW, THEREFORE, |, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim February 2004 as National African American History Month. | call upon public officials, educators, librarians, and all the people of the United States to observe this month with appropriate programs and activities that highlight and honor the contributions African Americans have made to our Nation. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, | have hereunto set my hand this third day of February, in the year of our Lord two thousand four, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and twenty-eighth.
