Lawrence Liggins OFFICE PHONE RESIDENCE PHONE | | 392-2211 394-5059 CHURCH HISTORY Some 65 years ago (1918), the Lot of the Wall Avenue Baptist Church was purchased by the Utah Baptist State Convention. Some tune Later, the congregation, the church was built by In 1929, Mrs. Georgia A. Holt from Los Angeles, CA came to Ogden, reopened the Wall Avenue Church doors that had been closed for a time, and began a Sunday Schook with one quarterly and the Bibfe. In August 1930, Mr. and Mrs. Neal came to Ogden and became agfrltated with the church. Upon a suggestion from the Neakls, Wal Avenue Baptist Church extended a call to AAs fAnst pastor, Reverend L. A. Platt. According to neconds, Reverend Platt preached his first seunon on October 5, 1930. He rendered facthful service until called to pastor at the Bethel Baptist Church, Pocatello, Idaho, in 1936, Succeeding ckude 1940; Reverend Reverend Rotlerson, 1962. Under pastors J. L. Jessie 1948-51; from Jones, L. and 1930 to the 1937; Conner, Reverend Reverend Washington's began 4n May 1952, eanky Reverend J. in- Paxton, 1937- Washington, 1952- 1942-48; B. 1960's Reverend J. pastorate, which R. the church accomplished two noteworthy things. Fanrst, in July 1952, a parsonage was purchased and a few months Later, a new parsonage and two Lots were purchased. Second, a dream came twe for Wall Avenue Bpatist Church. They burikt a new church. We are presently occupying that structure whose ground breaking services were held on Sunday, May 16, 1955, and whose dedication took place on October 26, 1958. From Auggested names for the new church, the name New Zion, submatted by Mis. Jammie Bell, was voted most popular. Thus, the Wak Avenue Baptist Church had a new building and a new name. Speech, 1971; Reverend Wiklie Davis who pastored from September 14, 1972 to July 1978 when he Left to accept pastorate in Las Vegas, Nevada, and under whose pastorate the mortgage on the parsonage at 709 33nd Street was patd off; and Reverend Isaac P. Committee Virgil and The Wilder CHURCH HISTORY - EXCERPT Some 68 years ago (1918), the Lot of the Wall Avenue Baptist Church was purchased by the Utah Baptist State Convention. Some time Later, the church was built by the congregation. In 1929, came to Ogden, Mrs. had been chosed Georgia A. Holt from Los Angeles, reopened the Wall for a time, Avenue CA Church doors that and began a Sunday School with one quarterly and the Bibge. a In August 1930, Mr. and Mrs. Neal came to Ogden and — became affiliated with the church. Upon a suggestion from the Neals, Walk Avenue Baptist Church extended a call to Ath first pastor, Reverend L. A. Pkatt. According to rne- cords, Reverend Platt preached his first sermon on October 5, 1930. He rendered faithful service until called to pastor at the Bethel Baptist Church, Pocatello, IP. in 1936. Succeeding pastors from 1936 to the early 1960's inckude Reverend J, L. Jones, 1937; Reverend Paxton, 19371940; Reverend Jessie L. Conner, 1942-1948; Reverend J. R. Rollerson, 1948-1951; and Reverend B. J. Washington, 19521961. Under Reverend Washington's pastorate, which began 4n May 1952, the church accomplished to noteworthy things. First, 4n July 1952, a parsonage was purchased and a few months Second, Later, a new parsonage and two Lots were purchased. a dream came true for Wall Avenue Baptist Church. They butlt a new church. We are presently occupying that Structure whose ground breaking services were held on Sunday, May 16, 1954, and whose dedication took place on October 26, 1958. From suggested names for the new church, the name New Zion, Submitted by Mis. Jimmie Bell, was voted most popu- Avarlable records indicate succeeding pastors from 1961 fan. Thus, the Wall Avenue Baptist Church had a new building and a new name. Reverend Washington pastored at New Zion | unttl 19617. to the present inckude Reverend 1970; Reverend J. Speech, Mikler, 1961; Reverend {. K. Curry, 1962-1969, under whose pastorate the church acquired the property at 2957 and 2959 Lincoln Avenue; Reverend 0. E. Piper, 1969, under whose pastorate the pardonage at 709 33nd Street was purchased; Reverend Watkins, S. 1971; Reverend Wikkie Davis Church History Continued . who pastored from September 14, 1972 to July 1978 when he left to accept pastorate in Las Vegas, Nevada, and under whose pastorate the mortgage on the parsonage at /09 33rd Street was paid off; and Reverend Isaac July P. Brantley 1978 until who served February T'n February Our first 1979, as Interim Pastor from 1979, the church extended a call to ‘, Reverent N. Lawrence Liggins. Pastor Liggins was pastoring in Texarkan a, Texas when he accepted our call and moved to Ogden in May 1979. Since that time, we have seen our church continue to progress. Liggins was to and "Love foremost ye one direction another." from Pastor Along with this, Pastor Liggins recognized and emphasized the need for us to win more souls to Christ. In this connection, on the First Sunday Night in November 1979, New Zion witnessed its biggest baptism ever when fathers, sons, mothers and daughters were among the twent y-five persons baptized. Pastor Liggins saw much work ahead for New Zion, including complete renovation of our present structure and a community development project consisting of an educational center for all and service programs for senior citizens and working parents. During 1980, our church has grown by sixty-two souls and much of the renovation has been accomplished. Additionally, buildings have been purchased for the center. 1983 the Reverend N. L.
