The services of Palm Sunday honor Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem. Jesus entered his last week on earth riding into Jerusalem on a donkey under a canopy of palm branches, with crowds hailing him as their king. To announce that he was indeed the Messiah, Jesus chose a time when all Israel would be gathered at Jerusalem, a place where huge crowds could see him, and a way of proclaiming his mission that was unmistakable. The people who were praising God for giving them a king had the wrong idea about Jesus. They were sure he would be a national leader who would restore their nation to its former glory, and thus they were deaf to the words of their prophets and blind to Jesus’ real mission. When it became apparent that Jesus was not going to fulfill their hopes many people turned against him. Palm Sunday was first celebrated in the 300’s by the Christian Church in Jerusalem. A joyous procession started at the Mount of Olives. The Bishop took the part of Jesus and rode ona donkey. Children sang and waved palm branches. The Roman Catholic celebration became a solemn processional and a Mass during which the Gospel story of the Crucifixion is chanted solemnly. In the Greek Church, Palm Sunday is a day of rejoicing. Palms are blessed and held, but there is no procession. Protestant churches in general have very simple Palm Sunday services. In many places, laurel, olive, willow, and other branches are used instead of the palm. HEE (3) Therefore, CHURCH HISTORY The New Zion Baptist Church traces its roots back to 1918 when the Utah Baptist State Convention purchased a lot on Wall Avenue in Ogden, Utah. Purchase price was eleven hundred dollars. The church was built by the congregation and was incorporated on February 19, 1926, under the leadership of Acting Pastor, Rev. James E. Moore. Documentation has not yet been located to identify the first minister who preached to the Wall Avenue congregation; however, the first pastor was the late Rev. L. A. Platt from Ontario, California. He pastored the church from 1930 to 1936. He preachd his sermon at Wall Avenue on October 5, 1930, and rendered faithful service until 1936 when he was called to pastor at the Bethel Baptist Church, Pocatello, Idaho. Earlier servants included Mrs. Georgia A. Holt who came to Ogden from Los Angeles, California in 1929. She reopened the church doors that had been closed for a time, and began a Sunday School with the Bible and one Sunday School quarterly. Then in 1930, Mr. and Mrs. Neal joined Wall Avenue, and it was they who suggested Rev. Platt as Pastor. Succeeding pastors from 1936 to the early 1960's included Rev. J. L. Jones, 1937: Rev. Paxton, 1937-40; Rev. Jessie L. Conner, 1942-48; Rev. J. R. Rev. Washington was Rollerson, 1948-51; and Rev. B. J. Washington, 1952-62. extended a call on April 8, 1952. He preached his first sermon as pastor on May I, 1952. During his ten-year pastorate, God blessed and the church membership grew. They were able, on July 5, 1952, to purchase and furnish a parsonage for the pastor's use. Cost was $8,000. Within a short time, the church purchased another parsonage as well as the lots where the New Zion Baptist Church now stands. These purchases amounted to $9, 850. Rev. Washington provided leadership in building the new church. Ground breaking services were held on Sunday, May 16, 1954. The foundation was laid in November, 1954, the cornerstone was laid October 31, 1955, and first services in the new church were held on Sunday, March 25, 1956 (Palm Sunday). Cost of the 50,000 brick structure was $90,000. The first $100 was contributed by Brother Obie Blackmore, an usher of the church. The Western States baptist Convention also gave a sizeable donation and bricks were donated by members, friends, business firms, and friends from Wyoming and Colorado. Furnishings were $11,000 and 60,000 hours of donated labor came from Pastor Washington, members, friends, and military personnel stationed at Hill Field, Utah. Members of the congregation secured loans from Ford Finance in Ogden to assist in financing the building. Upon completion, the church itself was debt free. Church members submitted names for the new church and “New Zion" submitted by Sister Jimmie Wilson Bell was chosen most popular by the congregation. The march from Wall Avenue Baptist to New Zion Baptist was led by Mrs. Jessie Carpenter (church pianist). The ribbon was cut by Sister Beverly Graham Reid. First baptism was that of Charlotte Matthews on March 25, 1956. Ellen Barlin Head was the first bride on October 27, 1956. Each year on Palm Sunday New Zion celebrates its church anniversary and on the fourth Sunday in October Loyalty Day Services are held to celebrate the October 26, 1958 dedication service. Rev. Washington resigned as pastor of New Zion in 1962. Succeeding pastors include Rev. Samuel C. Miller, 1963-64 and Rev. L.K. Curry, 1965-68. (4) During Rev. Curry’s pastorate, the church paid off its debts and acquired the property at 2957/2959 Lincoln Avenue. Rev. O. E. Piper served as pastor in 1969 during which time the parsonage at 709 33rd Street was purchased. Rev. L. W. Watkins pastored in 1970, followed by Rev. S. J. Speech in 1971. On September 14, 1972 the church called Rev. Willie Davis as pastor. During his pastorate the church witnessed a great youth participation and church membership increased by large numbers. Also, there was a mortgage burning ceremony to celebrate payoff of the mortgage on the parsonage at 709 33rd Street. Rev. Willie Martin II and Rev. I.P. Brantley were licensed to preach the gospel. Rev. Davis pastored until July 1978 when he accepted the pastorate of Second Baptist Church, Las Vegas, Nevada. In February 1979 the church extended a call to Rev. N. Lawrence Liggins of Texarkana, Texas. He accepted the call and moved to Utah in May 1979. During his pastorate the church accomplished much needed remodeling including a central heating and air conditioning system. Also, the property at 2942/44 Lincoln Avenue was acquired with plans to use it for an educational center and senior citizens complex. God blessed and the church grew. New Zion witnessed its largest baptism ever on November 4, 1979 when 26 persons were baptized. Seven deacons were ordained on Rev. Liggins’ watch, namely, John Carpenter, Jack Hawthorne, Norman Carter, Harry Nunn, Walter McGlothan, Kenneth Wilder, and Ray Finn. Additionally a a ae Ministers Ellis Jackson, Calvin Jackson and Jack Hawthorne were licensed to preach the gospel. Rev. Liggins pastored until July 7, 1983. Rev. Tyrone Seals of Las Vegas, Nevada was called as pastor on August 13, 1984. He was instrumental in reactivating the youth choirs and Ministers Reginald B. Clinton and J. C. Barnes were licensed to peach the gospel. He also dedicated the "Theophilus House" just south of the church, to be used as a youth center. Sister Dula Brock, then Director of Christian Education, led the New Zion members to give various items of support including finances to furnish and keep the Theophilus House operational until it was torn down due to cracks in its foundation. Rev. Seals pastored until June 8, 1985. On April 5, 1987, Rev. I. P. Brantley was called as pastor. He led the church in accomplishing several remodeling projects and proposed a corporation through which the church would construct a senior citizens complex. Brothers Gerod Sawyer, Lamont Green, and Elwood Stewart were ordained as deacons and Rev. Sargent Nelson was licensed to preach the gospel. Rev. Brantley pastored until July 31, 1993 when he resigned and moved to Florida. Interim pastors over the years include Rev. W. I. Monroe, Rev. T. A. Maxwell, Rev. I. P. Brantley, 1978; Rev. Cal Carter, 1983-84; Rev. Reginald B. Clinton,June 1985- April 1987; Rev. Sargent Nelson, August-November 1993; and Rev. James Gates, November 1993-November 1994. Under Rev. Gates’ leadership Rev. Elwood Stewart was licensed to peach the gospel. Our present pastor, Rev. George M. Merritt, Jr. was extended a called as pastor on December 16, 1994. He accepted on January 3, 1995 and made the move from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Utah in January 1995. Pastor Merritt is leading us to be a praying and studying church and admonishes us to obey the Lord’s commands. As our theme this year so appropriately acclaims - “we are pressing on." (6) <i Lesson Subject: "Maturing through Worship" Lesson Scripture: I Corinthians 14:20-33a Time: A.D. 55 Place: From Ephesus Writer: Paul Golden Text: "When ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying." -I Cor. 14:26 Today’s Aim Facts: to know the characteristics of spiritual maturity. Principle: to understand how spiritual maturity is developed in the context of corporate worship through the principles of evangelism and organization. —_ ee THE SUNDAY SCHOOL April 9, 1995 Application: to encourage us to evidence movement toward spiritual maturity as we worship the risen Saviour with un unselfish spirit. Some Practical Points: 1. Although Paul did not specifically use the term, he nevertheless accused the Corinthian Christians of being more caught up in a worship that entertained, rather than a style of worship that served to build up the Body of Christ. 2. On the other hand, let not Paul be misunderstood; there is nothing uplifting about a worship that leaves one "cold" or that is "unfeeling." Genuine worship should inspire and uplift, but it should also send us forth with the challenge to be more loyal and productive witness for Christ and His Kingdom. (7) The Sunday School Continued 3. Immature Christians are attracted by the showy and sensational; mature believers will be attracted to what is solid and substantial. (I Cor. 14:20). 4. Some things about the Christian life cannot be understood by those who are not believers (I Cor. 14:21-22; Matt. 13:10-15). 5. Clearly explaining God’s Word unbelievers (I Cor. 14:23-25). benefits both believers and 6. What happens in the worship service eet: promote spiritual growth, not confusion (vs. 33). AGE-GROUP EMPHASIS Children. Children need to know how to worship God. Worship means showing love and submission to God. Worship is simple. Teachers should keep it simple and teach the simplicity of worshiping God. Youth. Young people need to have that special assurance that God hears them when they worship Him. This can be done by describing the meaning of worship. They need to be reminded that God desires that they worship Him. He longs to meet with them. They need to contemplate the wonderful promises of God, such as those in John 6:37, Hebrews 13:5 and I John 1:7-9. Adults. The Corinthians forgot the simplicity of worship. They thought of worship as an opportunity to speak, and they forgot about the importance of hearing God. We should emphasize the importance of hearing God speak. Remember the words of Christ to the churches in Revelation 2 and 3. True worship begins with a willingness to hear God. James said, "Let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:" James 1:19. WE BELIEVE that the religion of Jesus Christ makes each one of us a servant to the best that is in life. We believe that the religion of Jesus Christ is a happy one. We believe it is better to love than to hate. Therefore,we welcome you joyously to this worship service. We sincerely pray that God’s richest blessings may be upon you.
