Josephine Minter A missionary from the National Baptist Convention in the United States of America assigned at the Bendoo Industrial Mission in Grand Cape Mount County Mother Josephine Minter has been honored by the mission for 20 years of service in Africa. Mother Minter, 71, first came to Africa in 1969 and was assigned to the Suehn Industrial Mission in Bomi County and later in Malawi, East Africa. She was then re-assigned to Liberia in 1972 at the Bendoo Mission where she worked for the past 17 years. At a special missionary day service held at the mission, former Garwular District Paramount Chief Zuana Sherman, gowned Mother Minter on behalf of residents of the district and thanked her for the numerous contributions and services rendered the residents in the areas of health and education. The Pastor of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Robertsport, Reverend Ishamel V Faika who delivered the special missionary day sermon at the Friendship Baptist Church, said “A touch of love, caring and sharing from Mother Minter have inspired many young men and women to live a decent and God-fearing life.” In response, Mother Minter thanked the Bendoo Mission family for honoring her for her contributions to the church and the community, and praised God for enabling her to serve in Africa, and Liberia in particular Mother Minter said she enjoyed the warm hospitality afforded her during her service in Africa and promised to always work for the betterment of mankind on earth. Come with us as we move on up alittle higher beginning. God has so much in store for His people. For 111 years is only the Thank you for all you have done and will continue to do. May God bless you in our celebration! Sincerely, Pastor Heartfelt Shanks! To The Rev. Dr. Robert E. Fowler Sr., Pastor of Victory Baptist Church, Las Vegas, Nevada, & Rev. Elvin Grant, Jr., Pastor of Mt. Ararat Missionary Baptist Church, Houston, Texas, local pastors and churches, ministers, local community supporters, to our many visitors, Calvary Church family, committees, and program participants, thank you, for sharing in our 111th Leadership Revival and Church Anniversary Service. All praises to God because He is Worthy to be Praised! The Anniversary Committee Church History By the 1890’s Salt Lake City’s small Black population had gained sufficient enough numbers as to encourage the formation and support of independent institutions that provided African-Americans with the opportunity to give greater meaning to their lives. In addressing their spiritual needs, group of Blacks who identified themselves as the Baptist Prayer Band, met and held worship services in their homes. By 1892, the “Baptist Prayer Band” was clearly established as “The Calvary Missionary Baptist Church” and identified as the “little colored house of worship in the alley ” In June of 1896, Rev A. E. Reynolds announced in the “Broad Ax” (a Black newspaper) that a building located in the rear of a white church was available as a place of worship for Black Baptists. January, 1898, Rev D. Jones arrived in Salt Lake City from Topeka, Kansas to pastor Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. He was replaced in 1901 by Rev J W Washington, an energetic person whose leadership was instrumental in the church’s growth during his tenure. On Sunday, June 29, 1902, the pastor and members of the congregation gave an afternoon and evening reception at their new chapel located at 472 East Second South. In 1911, the Eastside Baptist Church site was purchased by the Calvary congregation from Immanuel Baptist Church. The first services were held on February 5" at the 679 East Third South location. Rev Allen Newman, pastored the church from 1913 to 1915. In 1921, under the leadership of Rev George Hart, the Calvary Baptist Church was incorporated by the State of Utah. Between 1924 and 1954, Calvary had eight pastors. In 1951, the Articles of Incorporation were revised and approved by the membership. The Rev William I. Monroe served as pastor of Calvary from 1954 to 1967 During his tenure, the church membership made great strides in terms of its membership and financial condition. On November 3, 1966 the Calvary congregation joyfully marched from their former worship place at Third South and Seventh East to their new place of worship at 532 East Seventh South. Special services culminated the activities of this day In 1974, Rev France A. Davis was installed as pastor of Calvary Pastor Davis has served the congregation for a longer period than any of his 22 predecessors. During his tenure, Calvary has continued her ongoing mission. Rev Davis and the Calvary congregation dedicated Calvary Towers, a low-income senior citizen housing complex adjacent to the church at 532 East 7th South on July 30, 1989 Under Rev Davis’ tenure. many improvements have been made. The 10/36 Scholarship Plan was initiated in 1992. The goal is for each member to contribute $10 per month for 36 months to endow a scholarship account to enable the church to substantially further the education of our youth by providing financial assistance. Church pews were padded in 1993 to aid in the comfort of our visitors, friends and members and in 1993 a public address system was installed complete with speakers, monitors, sound board, double cassette recorder-player deck and microphones to assist in making the ministry available to all. Pastor Davis with support of the congregation earned a Masters of Ministry Degree. Church History (continued) The membership and visitors continue to increase resulting in seating and parking problems. In 1994, we added the 8:00 a.m. worship service to alleviate the problem. However as our members continue to thirst for knowledge about Jesus Christ, most stay right through to the 11:00 a.m. service. We continue to have a greater need for additional programs, worship and parking spaces. In 1995, a new sign was installed to inform all of our worship times. The kitchen was also remodeled. By the fall of 1995, it was apparent the Church had outgrown this present facility December 1995, the membership voted approval to purchase land and build a larger church facility Each member was asked to pledge and give accordingly as the Lord blessed them. In 1996, God blessed us to secure approximately 2 1/2 acres of land and we have constructed a 47,000 square feet facility at 1090 South State Street. This more adequate space for worship, education, community and recreational activities was occupied and dedicated in November 2001 with only a limited mortgage. We are enjoying what Dr Robert Fowler calls a “First Class” facility Praise God from whom all blessings flow With more than 600 members and many more attending, the congregation continues to meet spiritual needs first and foremost while also helping people wherever they hurt. Since everybody is welcomed, our congregation is more and more diverse with a distinct African American style of worship. We lift our voice in praise and trust God to speak to our lives. During the past 12 months, we had an exciting youth oriented revival, developed our Elderly Ministry, held our first Church picnic on the church grounds and put the facilities to better use with dance, play, scouts, and sports teams. Our numbers continue to grow as does our spirit and maturity Join us in moving on up to ‘“Newness of Life” and reading about us on our website (http://www.calvaryslc.com) and in “ON ONE ACCORD” — our Church newsletter Nobody can deny that God has brought us a long ways. Thank you for your support and participation in the Calvary Missionary Baptist Church. While some have gone from labor to reward, we are truly blessed to be a congregation that is “ALIVE Ce JULIA WARD MOORE GAIL FLEMINGS May 18, 2003 LUTTIE PENDLETON January 24, 2003 KALIEE GATES August 19, 2003 May 21, 2003 CLAY WASHINGTON September 3, 2003 ih ALLA LEE ELLIOTT October 14, 2003 The Rev, Dr. Robert Fowler, Pastor Victory Baptist Church Las Vegas, Nevada About our Leadership Trainer & Revivailist..... Wynne for 52 years of service. ON ONO. Faithful Serre. Sis. Gladys Hesleph Sis. Gladys Hesleph is foremost a Christian, a wife ~ and mother who takes all of these roles seriously This tribute focuses on each of these traits. There is something about the way she carries herself in dress, talk and behavior that lets us know that she believes in the Lord and that He is the head of her life. She has always served in the church in some capacity, with the choir, counseling or teaching. She always worked with choirs, because playing the piano by ear was one of her special gifts. She took some teenagers in the church and formed one of the first young adult choirs in Utah. She worked closely with Sis. Phyllis Grayson, who was her good friend and director She always prayed about the music and selected music that young people would understand and that would addto the church service. She always found a biblical scripture and meaning of the song. She said music had to be more than just a beat. It was the message in the song that was important not the beat. The song should always have meaning that would help those who heard it. This young adult choir was so intrigued with her that they disciplined themselves as far as getting to rehearsals on time and learning the music and presenting it correctly This choir lasted through three pastors and a new church! Sis. Hesleph was the wife of one husband, Bro. Willie D. Hesleph, who came to Utah because of his military assignment in Utah. He soon sent for Sis. Hesleph and they were married and had six children, five boys and one girl. Although she had six children very close in age, her home was clean and dinner was served every evening when her husband arrived home and snacks for the children when they came home. She was also able to help them with homework. The Hesleph family attended church regularly and on Sundays when she played the piano she lined her six children up on the bench close by her and that is where they remained behaving themselves. They all attended Sunday School and worked in some organization in the church: usher board, choir or mission. Her children were very fortunate that they had a Sis. Hesleph was involved in their lives totally with school. working in-the home mom. church and play She along with Bro. Hesleph put their children all through school and they graduated. She returned to school and got her Bachelors and Masters degree. She then used that knowledge to counsel in the schools. She is retired now and available for counseling in the church as the Listening Ear She has helped members young and old in our church. Sis. Hesleph has always walked the talk and talked the walk. She still loves and serves the Lord and Calvary Baptist Church. She is a shining light for all to follow Sis. Hesleph proves that you can do everything decent and in order Serve the Lord with gladness, use your talents for Him and He will direct your path. She is now a deaconess recently has consented to work with the Women’s Missionary Chorus. God Bless you Sis.
