Show Coping Strategies and Stress Reduction for Behavioral Health Nurses • Nurses work in a fast-paced profession with high demands and responsibilities and little control over outcomes.1 • Unmanaged job stress can affect productivity, clinical accuracy, and overall well-being.2,3 • Managing stressful situations healthily through coping skills such as planning, problem-solving, and mindfulness have led to better performance and job satisfaction.5 Gabrielle Molosz, BSN, RN, MSN Student Jamie Wankier Randles, EdD, MSN, RN Dave Castaneda, MSN, RN INTERVENTIONS BACKGROUND This project aimed to decrease behavioral health nurses’ self-reported stress levels by providing education on coping skills, including planning, problem-solving, and mindfulness. Tools for Improving Resilience, Job Satisfaction, and Mental Health Interventions were developed for this project with the following deliverables: - PowerPoints on coping skills for staff and administrators - Pre- and post-education surveys to measure nursing stress - Handouts summarizing the three selected coping skills: planning, problem-solving, and mindfulness - Flyers to act as reminders to practice the taught coping skills in the unit - A timeline METHODS The framework used was John-Kotter’s 8-Step Change Model. The model was selected because it accommodates celebrations for smaller wins as the team progresses toward the final goal. The methods used spanned several steps as follows: • Step 1: Study findings were presented to management to obtain permission for project implementation. • Step 2: Pre- and post-education surveys were created for behavioral health nurses to complete to measure the success of the coping skills provided, • Step 3: Nursing staff were educated on coping skills and encouraged to implement tools in their work routines. • Step 4: Debriefing. IMPACTS - Education will teach nurses to adopt appropriate coping skills. - Nurses will be able to reduce stress levels by implementing coping skills. - Improved stress levels will improve mental health for nurses. - Appropriate stress management can reduce the occurrence of adverse events. CONCLUSIONS Positively managing stress through implementing education on coping skills will provide positive outcomes for nurses, 5 patients, and the facility in several ways.
