EDWARD DAVIS The Organizer and Counselor 16 18) REV e ARLANDER The C. MITCHELL Bu i Ider REV. L. K. CURRY Pastor History of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church Mankind records history as a memorial to the deeds of those who have served their day and moved on, and as a guide and inspiration to those who follow. It is with this thought in mind that we annually review the life of this congregation. Mt. Calvary was born the Second Sunday in September, 1923, when a group of dedicated persons met at the home of Bro. Thomas Ellis, on Steuben Street, to organize the New Church. Rev. Edward C. Rayburn was elected Pastor. There they worshiped until the fall of 1924, when "The Little Church on the Alley'' was built by Bro. Hosea Rogers. This building cost Mt. Calvary approximately $1,000.00. His test at Mt. Calvary completed, Rev. Rayburn moved on to other fields of labor. In the years following, the church was honored with a succession of able Ministers: The Reverends, well, Whitaker, Harrington, R. W. Collins, and C. Jones. All served Mt. Calvary This transitionary period, was further complicated by the "National Depression". The Church however continued to be led by the will of the Holy Spirit and was held together by the efforts of its' Spirit-filled Deaconry led by their Chairman, Bro. Walter Campbell. It was during this time that the Rev. Arlander C. Mitchell, then nationally known as the "Boy Evangelist’ assumed the Pastorate of Mt. Calvary. The Church grew and prospered. To accommodate the increased membership, the long dreamed of building on [11th Street was constructed in 1946. That also soon proved too small and in 1953 ground was broken for our present building. In March 1954 Rev. Mitchell led the Congregation into the completed building. Within the walls of the new building were incorporated portions of the previous buildings, each of which holds special significance. Thus Rev. Mitchell proved himself, not only a militant leader for God, but also a builder for His Kingdom. He untiringly led Mt. Calvary for twenty-four years. | On January 13, 1959, Rev. A. Edward Davis was elected as Pastor of Mt. Calvary, coming here from St. Paul Baptist Church of Pine Bluff, Ark. He was well prepared to meet the challenge of the new charge by his wide experience as a Pastor and Educator. He em- phasized Tithing as God's way of supporting His Church. Under his leadership the building was remodeled to utilize the space completely, the Church office was opened daily for the convenience of the membership. The Benevolent Fund, and the Scholarship Fund were organ- ized. The Church indebtedness was greatly reduced. Several parcels of land were acquired for church expansion. On Friday, November 10, 1967, God in His wisdom called His Servant to his Heavenly reward. Rev. Davis left Mt. Calvary a high moral legacy, a sound program, a deeply grounded Spiritual Fellowship of the committed, and a plain example for anyone of sound mind to follow. Mt Calvary found itself again a flock without a shepherd. The call to pastor was extended to Rev. Lacy Kirk Curry in February 1968. He was at that time the Pastor of the New Zion Baptist Church of Ogden, Utah. Once again Christ had called a busy fisherman to lead His people. On Sunday, March 10, 1968, Rev. Curry formally accepted the respon- sibility of pastoring Mt. Calvary. Coming to us with an aggressive he has continued to build and enlarge upon the foundation and positive program laid by his predecessors. (Continued on next page) Through the efforts of the members in the 1968 Church Anniversary and a generous legacy from our late Pastor and wife the Church mortgage was liquidated. Under our present Pastor the church has expanded in its' many fields. Our "A. Edward Davis Scholarship Fund" was so named as a living memorial to our late Pastor, the Second Sunday of November is set aside as the Annual Memorial and Rally Day. The property adjacent to the church was purchased and paved with asphalt for a parking lot. Our Tithing program continues to grow, all departments in the Church have renewed life. The music department has had added a sixty-five voice childrens' choir who serve for all services. Pastor Curry brought the idea of the "All Saints Day" which is observed annually in October. It is a source of great Spiritual strength and inspiration to all who prayerfully participate. We may have made no spectacular advances in the past year, but we have obeyed the Will of the Lord. We are as the Oak Tree . . . putting down our roots deeply, so that when the time comes dreams of Expansion, to move we can Educational be sure we are fixed and Building, Senior Citizen Home, our foundation sure. This is why we constantly extend the invitation .. , "Come to Mt. Calvary .., Up where The Spirit is". Today "Calvary" is still the "Little Church on the Alley", where humility, love and Spirit-filled souls are evident, "Where Everybody is Somebody", a Citadel for Worship, a Tabernacle for personal dedication, a Holy Ghost Headquarters, a Spiritual Theatre with a stage for the drama of human destiny, a Church where you find Light and Heart, and Mind working together for that great effective union of both God and Man.
