Fred 2 Mrs. ive. Greenwell. ee Darrell yi Mrs. The first meeting of the Drama club of Ogden was held in the form of a tea Thursday, September 26, in the lounge of the Hotel Ben Lomond with Mrs. Darrell J. Professor Goates stressed the fact that there was no true American theatre — that American drama as we see it to- day is merely transplanted Euro-| the had pean drama, that the only true]. American theatre is that which is being developed in our university theatres today. In America, either the matic productions. theatre a| The best and ae really only authentic records we have of early American theatre were found in police records, he stated. It was only when the academic) value of the theatre was recognized that any progress was made in that field. When Harvard university finally realized the great educational value in the theatre) and accepted it as true art—producing, directing plays—then and _ the whole world writing of ed- ucation followed suit and the theatre was finally incorporated into the schools. From these experimental stations will rise the real American theatre. Professor Goates concluded his lecture with reference to one of the earliest, and perhaps most significant American play of which we have record. The name of the play is “Metamora” or ‘The Last of the Wampanoags” and was produced first in New York in 1829, later, in 1866, in Salt Lake City. Professor Goates was a member of a group endeavoring to locate early American plays, and found four of the five acts of the original manuscript in Salt Lake City. The script, at this time of course, is very valualbe, and only four copies have been made of it up to the present time. One of the copies is now in the Rockefeller institute. Professor. Goates allowed the Drama club members to examine the original manuscript which he had brought with him, and this proved to be one of the highlights of the afternoon. ma After a brief discussion, tea was served by the hostesses.
