Excused: Afton Castlemain, Jo>DAnn Dance, Mary Halverson, Carol Hurst, Meg Naisbitt, Suzanne Poole, Jolene Rausch, Bonnie Whittaker. Absent: Shirlene Hawks-Jacobs, Martha Krebs, Susie Venable. Members of the Drama Club driving west toward the home of Jolene Zito were greeted by the glaring sun; gratefully all the members arrived safely for the first meeting of the 2009-2010 season. President Charlene Nelson enthusiastically welcomed and thanked everyone for their attendance. This year’s theme is “Women of Mystery.” The minutes from the May and June meetings were read by Jolene Zito and approved by the club members. Charlene discussed her vision for the coming year with the members. She distributed booklets which she had prepared with instructions on how to sign up for Facebook. She discussed her idea of setting up a Facebook account accessible to members of the Drama Club only. She discussed using Facebook for notification and updates for those members who wish and the more traditional notification by standard mail. Club members were receptive to this idea. The booklet also contained clues to the 2 mystery women of the month. The clues were read and at the end of the meeting members guessed who they were. This month’s “women of mystery” were Val Newton and Hazel Robertson. Charlene will have clues each month for 2 ladies of the club as a way to get to know each other a little better. Janette Bischoff made a correction on her e-mail that is listed in the club book, it should read KAM7Bischoff, and Jolene Rausch’s prefix on her telephone number is wrong, it should read: 604. Janette Bischoff gave her auditors report for last year and reminded everyone that yearly dues of $25.00 could be given to her tonight. Marge Dene Taylor moved to approve the treasurer’s report, Kera Hill seconded. The budget was reviewed by Janette and approved by the club members with Marge Dene Taylor making the motion to approve and Teresa Sanderson seconded. Marge Dene Taylor reviewed some of the by-laws of the club. We currently have 2 openings for new members. Charlene reviewed various concerns and responsibilities of the Drama Club members, including; turn in all receipts for rermbursement, keep the courtesy committee informed of events that effect our members, turn in 1 copy only of the scripts to Joyce, and Chairs need to arrange to pick up the music stands from Janette. The members were then delighted with Sharyl Tucker as she sang one of Stephen Sondheim’s best: “Not While I’m Around” from Sweeny Todd, which was a nice introduction to the menacing nature of the evening’s show “D is for Danger” by Charles Emery, with Margaret Farr as chairman. The show revolved around the young and beautiful school teacher, Joanna Dunbar, played by Vicki Crist. She and her Aunt Della, played by Annette Terry, rented a room in their home to a young writer named, Elliot, played by Nell Heller. He is a mysterious character who also happens to be handsome and single, but at the same time menacing. He makes advances toward the young heroine despite her already having a suitor, Bill, played by Pam Higginson. With the help of Margaret Farr as narrator and officer of the law the story advances and in the final scene young Joanna is cornered by the murderous Elliot. He described the sounds of his previous victims as he tortured and killed them and how he was going to do the same to her. Through this dialogue the audience realizes that this man is a murderer of school teachers who is going down the alphabet and he is on letter “D” for Dunbar. Elliot reveals himself as a psycho, publicity hungry, wan-a-be actor who thrives on reading about himself in the papers! Bill and Aunt Joanna arrive just in time to save the day and make sure the bad guy gets his just desserts; and speaking of desserts, the evening ended with a slice of apple pie and ice cream with a sprinkling of nuts on the side. h a ( Da anda T e m e a t e s Play: “Doubt” hairman: Marge Taylor ast: . o'Dann Dance, “ee fusic: NK Meg Ak Naispditt NT ++ Susie Venable ouse: - Meg Naisbitt, JoD'Ann Dance, Marge Taylor Regrets: 801-392-1401 Meg (We DOUBT you'd want to miss out)! The meeting was late getting started due to road closures. Charlene Nelson called the meeting to order at 7:40 pm. Charlene encouraged all members to join Facebook for Drama Club updates. Music for the evening was provided by Meg Naisbitt, who played a medley of her favorite songs “just because [she] liked them.” The time was turned over to Marge Taylor to introduce the evening’s play, Doubt, a 2004 play by John Patrick Shanley originally staged off-Broadway at the Manhattan Theatre Club on November 23, 2004. The play is set in the St. Nicholas Church School in the Bronx during the fall of 1964.The play opens as Father Flynn, played by Marge Taylor, addresses the congregation of the importance of uncertainty (“Doubt can be a bond as powerful and sustaining as certainty.””) Father Flynn is a young priest new to the Parrish. He believes the clergy should be more accessible to the parish and be thought of "as members of their family." He is progressive in policy and very popular in the church community. Sister Aloysius, played by JoD’Ann Dance, is a conservative nun who insists that her students not be coddled, she is also suspicious of misconduct between Father Flynn and Donald Muller, the first black student at St. Nicholas. During a meeting with a Sister James, a sunny, kind, trusting, caring younger nun, played by Susie Venable, it becomes clear that Aloysius harbors a deep mistrust toward her students, her fellow clergymen, and society in general. Naive and impressionable, James is easily upset by Aloysius’ severe manner and harsh criticism. In a private meeting regarding the Christmas pageant, Aloysius in the present of James, confronts Flynn with her suspicions. He angrily denies any wrong doing. Aloysius is not satisfied. Tempers flair, accusations fly and all present were left captivated and on the edge of there seats. Flynn calls the Bishop to apply for a transfer and we learn in the final scene that he has received a promotion and was recently instated as the pastor of a nearby parochial school. Troubled by the outcome, Aloysius, reveals to Sister James that many of the accusations were false and admits in the last lines of the play, “I have doubts, I have such doubts!” It was a performance by all worthy of an Oscar! Well done ladies! Charlene Nelson then introduced Octobers’ Mystery women, Tita Lindquist and <) of 22 The minutes were read by Jolene Zito and everyone present enjoyed a delightful pumpkin mousse. As he learns more about Laura, Mark begins to fall in love with her memory. Lydecker accuses him of falling in love with a“dead woman!’ When Laura turns out to be very much alive she becomes the prime suspect. Mark discovers the real murder victim was a young model by the name of Joyce Madden. As the plot thickens, all fingers are pointing to Laura as the jealous, jilted lover. After welcoming the enthusiastic group, Charlene discussed the responses that she has received from many of the sustaining members who have been contacted regarding their status in Drama Club. Pat Bean, Ruth Darrington, Sharon Allred, and Jayne Johnson sent gracious responses to the inquiry; all felt it was time to remove them from our membership rolls. Club members then voted on the addition of Charlene Adams to our group, which was in the affirmative. The evening continued with the presentation of the lovely Russian Hymn “God Preserve Our Noble Empress” sung by Jeanne Hall and Karen Brookens with Carol Hurst accompanying them on the piano in the next room. It served as a great introduction to the evening’s play “Anastasia.” Marcelle Maurette wrote the play “Anastasia” based on the popular rumor that the youngest daughter of Nicholas, last Tsar of Russia, escaped the execution of the rest of the royal family. It tells of a young suicidal woman that is taken by a group of Russian exiles so they can collect money from the Bank of England by having the woman pose as the heir to the Russian throne. The mother of the fallen czar must make the final decision as to whether the young woman is or isn’t Anastasia. The woman’s captors as well as the audience begin to wonder if the woman is indeed the young Anastasia. The tender scene between the Dowager Empress and the young girl leaves all pondering the unsolved historical mystery and tragedy. This play was precisely played with close attention to detail and characterizations. The authentic Russian hats worn by some cast members added to the ambiance of the evening. The script, though fiction, presented a convincing scenario of the aftermath of the horrific event in Russian history. When the end revealed that Anastasia had disappeared, the audience sat in stunned silence for a moment before the grateful applause began. One bit of advice received from this piece was “If you want to reform a man, start with his grandfather.” The talented cast included: Hazel Robertson, Vicki Crist, Jeanne Hall, Karen Brookens, Carol Hurst, and Joyce Stillwell. The “Mystery Women” for the evening were Bonnie Whitaker and Mary Halverson. The evening ended with a serving of eheeelate-crumd cake, cool water, and assorted nuts. The minutes were then read by Jolene Rausch and Jolene Zito. It was brought to our attention that corrections to the minutes do not have to be motioned and seconded, just approved. It was then announced that the play in May would be at Sharyl Tucker’s home. Jolene Zito then read the list of new officers for Drama Club for 2010-2011. We then had the privilege to hear a delightful musical duet sung by Janette Bishoff and her daughter NG teu 2. Meg Nesbitt accompanied them on the piano. The time was then turned over to Kera Hill to introduce the play for March: Agatha Christie’s “The Spider Web”. The play was written at the request of its’ star, Margaret Lockwood. Christie wrote the play during the period of the final rehearsal for “Witness for the Prosecution”. She also wrote a role in the play which would be suitable for Lockwood’s fourteen-year-old daughter. In the play, Clarissa Hailsham-Brown is the second wife of a foreign diplomat, Henry, and stepmother to his teenage daughter, Pippa. They are currently living in a large house they are renting at a very cheap price. This is to make sure that someone with the name “Brown” becomes residence in order for thieves to enter the house to steal something they think the real Mrs. Brown possesses. There are three guests staying with them: Sir Rowland Delahaye, Hugo Birch, and a young man by the name of Jeremy Warrender. The three house guests are later asked to dispose of a dead body. Clarissa receives a very unwanted visitor: Oliver Costello, who’s real motive for the visit is to obtain money and she accuses him of blackmail. She then threatens to expose Costello’s drug activities. He is later murdered but by whom? This play contains all the classic Agatha Christie plots; murder, theft, hidden passages, secret doors, witchcraft, black mail, mistaken identity et cetera. “Oh what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive”. The cast included: Geneva Peterson, Margaret Farr, Bonnie King, Meg Nesbitt, Kera Hill, Tita Linquist, and Mary Halverson. Well, well done ladies. The day turned out to be a rather pleasant one as Charlene Nelson welcomed Drama Club members to the lovely home of Helen Plowgain. She then brought to our attention some sad news that long time member Vera Eccles had passed away, flowers were sent from the Drama Club. She will be missed. Charlene then read a letter from Nell Heller regarding her resignation due to health issues and change of residence. She also indicated that Kathy Douglas would like to continue being a sustaining member. She is our only sustaining member as of late. Charlene welcomed new member Charlene Adams and the slate of officers for 2010-2011 was read by Jolene Zito. The voting was unanimous. June breakfast was announced for June 5" at the Ogden Golf and Country Club. A list was circulated among drama club members for themselves and guests attending the event. After much anticipation the time was then turned over to Val Newton for the introduction of the evenings play; Good Help Is So Hard To Murder, written by Pat Cook. Pat Cook was inspired to write after seeing a performance of Neil Simon’s, The Odd Couple. His first play was Rest in Peace. He has gone on to write 125 more plays. We knew we were in for a wild ride as the curtain rises and a very picky parrot opens the scene. Good Help is So Hard to Murder, a comedy in two acts takes place in the deep south. Convinced that the maid Libby knows too much about her family’s shady past,[ Now who doesn’t have skeletons in their closet,] Delilah conspires with her younger sister Mirribelle to kill her. Throw in visits from a so called psychic, the Grim Reaper, a crazy aunt that has just recently escaped from the “nut house”, the town’s only female police officer, and the reactions of their sarcastic family pet a parrot named Socrates and you’re in for an evening filled with zany characters and lots of laughs. The cast included: Val Newton as Elmira, Socrates, and stage direction. Pam Higginson as Mirribelle Janette Bishoff as Delilah Sharyl Tucker as Libby and Officer Judy Myrene VanDyke as Florance Geneva Petterson as Aunt Minnie Bonnie King had one more announcement concerning June breakfast and we were then introduced to this months women of mystery, Pam Higginson and Jolene Rausch. Charlene Nelson greeted us and thanked Sharyl Tucker for the use of her home. The minutes were read by Jolene Rausch followed by the annual secretary’s report. Charlene next read the annual treasury report in the absence of Jolene Zito. Since our last meeting, Judy Anderson, Gail Richards, and Luacine Bunnell would like to continue as sustaining members. We now have two openings for new members. Myrene VanDyke reminded us all of June Breakfast and the cost will be $11.50 per person. The program will be first, so be there early. Charlene then turned the time over to Suzanne Poole for the evening’s musical number, “Reflections on the Water” by Claude Debussy. It was exquisite! Incidentally, when the music started, so did the rain accompanied by thunder and lightning. All came together to set the tone for the evening’s play. Charlene Nelson then turned the time over to the play chairman Susie Venable to introduce “Early Frost” written by Douglas Parkhurst. Little is known about the author. | Alice, played by Karen Brookins, is a twelve year-old girl who is sent to live with her two aunts after the death of her parents. Louise, played by Mary Halverson, is the older of the two aunts and a kind and gentle woman. Hannah, played by Bonnie Whittaker, is “a little removed” and obsessed with her chickens. She also “hates rain and children.” Fifty years ago, Hannah’s friend Lydia, played by Kera Hill, disappeared mysteriously while playing with Hannah. No body was ever found and Hannah said the gypsies had taken her. “Gypsies are no good,” she said. As the scene progresses, we hear the song “London Bridge” played faintly in the background on a harmonica. Alice is the only one that can hear it and has the feeling she needs to find a doll ina blue dress. Her search leads her to an old trunk in the attic where she comes face to face with Lydia’s ghost. It is later revealed that it was Hannah who was responsible for her death. At curtain, the room was silent. All were left unsettled. This play was “like something touched by an early frost.” The Women of Mystery for May were tap-dancing Afton Castlemain and champion cow-pie thrower Joyce Stillwell. Chocolate-covered strawberries and strawberry cake roll gave a brightening conclusion to a gloomy evening. See everyone on the fifth!!
