She expressed Pres. Higginson’s regret at not being able to attend the opening meeting and greet all of the wonderful members. We will look forward to seeing her next month. She also thanked Suzanne Poole for the use of her lovely teaching studio. It was spacious enough to accommodate all of Drama Club very comfortably. Roll was taken by Sharyl Tucker, Past President, acting in behalf of Janette Bishchoff, recording secretary, who was excused due to sudden illness. Of the 30 active members of Drama Club, there were 15 in attendance, 11 excused, and 4 unexcused. No emeritus members were in attendance. Reading of the minutes for the May and June meetings was postponed until November due to Janette’s absence. Susi greeted and welcomed our newest member, Charyol Wilcox. Charyol pointed out an upcoming production of “The Scarlett Pimpernel’ playing at Center Pointe Theatre, for which she has worked frequently as a costumer. She knows personally the actress portraying ‘Marguerite,’ whose name is Holly Jo Samuels. Charyol highly recommended that the members of Drama Club see this production because Ms. Samuels is so very talented. Jo D’Anne Dance hosted one more “Constitution and Bylaws” moment as is customary at the opening meeting. In her explanation of responsibilities, she pointed out the decision by the executive committee to raise the annual dues to $30 in order to meet the budget needs of the club. She also reminded members of the responsibility to handle absences in a timely manner: first, let the hostess know as far in advance as possible, and arrange for a substitute if you are not able to fulfill a play or hostessing assignment. There was a bit of further discussion and explanation regarding the budget issues and it was clarified that the current balance in the bank account constitutes a “Rainy Day” fund as is not considered as money to budget. Budget money will come only from the dues collected this year. At this point in the meeting it was decided to wait till a later date to hear the budget and auditor's reports since both auditor and treasurer were absent. Motion to raise the dues to $30 per active member was made by Marge Dene Taylor (?), seconded by WAM Hy | , and passed unanimously by a vote of the members. Susi pointed out some of the ways balancing the budget could be accomplished: namely, changing the mode of printing for the annual yearbook. Bonnie King suggested that she would be happy to receive her book as a PDF document via email that she could print herself and that others with computer skills could as well. Susi proposed printing the book in a larger page format that could be prepared in house and printed much cheaper. To keep discussion time to a minimum on this issue, Marge Dene Taylor suggested we table this idea until the Program Committee comes forth with their proposal for next year’s activities. All agreed. Jeanne Hall passed around a sign-up sheet for October Guest Night. She explained the location of the Hope Center in Roy, which will serve as the venue for Guest Night this year. Susie Venable explained that the program will be a female version of “The Odd Couple.” No piano will be needed for Guest Night. When Karen Brookens arrived, she presented an abbreviated version of the budget report in behalf of Meg Naisbitt, Treasurer, who is excused. She confirmed the budget constraints which prompted the idea to raise dues. Time was turned over to JoD’Ann Dance, Chair for tonight’s presentation. She first invited Suzanne Poole to come forward and present a musical number. Suzanne performed “Autumn Concerto,” by C. Bargoni, as a piano solo on her beautiful Schimmel grand. Her performance was so lovely and all enjoyed not only listening but watching her play. The program for the evening was “Cricket on the Hearth.” The story was originally written by Charles Dickens and adapted into a play. JoD’Ann and Suzanne had prepared a brief Drama Club history moment, showing on the TV screen a picture of the original script used in the 1957 Drama Club production. Included in the archive pictures was a group photo showing performers Fern Taylor and Coleen Price Moore on stage. Since this play had been done even earlier by Drama Club, a picture of that 1930-ish production was displayed showing a picture of Leah Greenwell, Myrene Van Dyke’s mother. One must listen carefully, for much of the Dickens-style language has been preserved and can be tedious. The story goes as follows: John Peerybingle, a carrier, lives with his young wife Dot, their baby boy and their nanny Tilly Slowboy. A cricket constantly chirps on the hearth and acts as a guardian angel to the family. One day a mysterious elderly stranger comes to visit and takes up lodging at Peerybingle's house for a few days. The life of the Peerybingles intersects with that of Caleb Plummer, a poor toymaker employed by the miser Mr. Tackleton. Caleb has a blind daughter Bertha, and a son Edward, who traveled to South America and was thought dead. The miser Tackleton is now on the eve of marrying Edward's sweetheart, May, but she does not love Tackleton. Tackleton reveals to John Peerybingle that his wife Dot has allegedly cheated on him and shows him a clandestine scene where Dot embraces the mysterious lodger who is in disguise, a man much younger than he actually seems. John is cut to the heart over this as he loves his wife dearly, but decides after some deliberations to relieve his wife of their marriage contract. In the end, the mysterious lodger is revealed to be none other than Edward who has returned home in disguise. Dot shows that she indeed has been faithful to John. Edward marries May hours before she is scheduled to marry Tackleton. However Tackleton's heart is melted by the Christmas season, like Ebenezer Scrooge, and he surrenders May to her true love. The Drama Club cast included JoD’Ann Dance, Myrene VanDyke, Marge Dene Taylor, and Val Newton. After the delightful production, all enjoyed delicious pumpkin pie and cider vane by hostess, Suzanne Poole. Her committee includedKerasHill and Jolene Zito. The meeting stands adjourned until October 11.
