On this anniversary, it 1s incumbent upon us to reflect, rejoice, repent and then renew our vows. As we turn the pages of the past years and recall all we have experienced as a church, our hearts are filled with praises to God for all that He has made possible. ‘Not unto us O Lord; but unto Thy name give glory.” (Psalm 115:1) How unfailing He has been in His provisions for all the needs! Yet, our hearts are sad over opportuntties lost, over our lack of fuller’ dedication to the service of the Lord, over our failure to bring a greater impact for Him upon the souls of many around us. True repentance 1s ours because of what we might have accomplished in the extension of our influence as a church. Another annwersary day, however, presents us with the challenge of renewal for He who has promised to do more for us than at our beginnings is in our midst to forgrve the sins and failures of the past and baptize us with power from on high as, in His mercy, we face another year of service. As this broken world has yet to see what God can accomplish through us who are completely yielded to Him, may all of us who form this church place ourselves anew upon His alter. For each of us, there 1s a message of warning, yet of encouragement can be found in the prayer of Moses, the man of God, who used the somewhat descriptive smile of life whether communal or personal, "We spend our years as a tale that 1s told.” (Psalm 90:9) Happy 50" Anniversary Pastor James & Sister Gloria Abrams Ong About our speaker ..... xe Sl |Reverend Rosalee “Rose” Charley } Reverend Rosalee Charley is a nativeof Marrero, Louisiana, where she first accepted the Lord at age nine, and was filled with the Holy Ghost. by the late Reverend Steve J Griffin. Many people acknowledge suffering is part of life, but you may be experiencing more frustration, disappointment, worry, and sadness than you need to. It’s easy to understand why Words sting. Dreams fall apart. Hearts break. To-do lists are long. Time is short. Perhaps someone has wronged you. Maybe you have been excluded, betrayed, or unfairly judged, leaving you feeling lonely or afraid. Perhaps you are dealing with a rebellious teenager or have received disheartening medical tests results. Maybe financial troubles overwhelm you. Perhaps you harbor resentment and are finding it difficult to forgive the pain of an undeserved wound. Lent and Easter beacon us to celebrate the gifts of grace and salvation through faith because of Christ’s atoning death on the cross. Grace is the unmerited favor, undeserved mercy, and loving kindness of God. But how do you open your heart to grace, not just on Easter Sunday, but every day? Upcoming e “Something’s Happening,” a play for Lent Saturday, March 27, 2004 5D Interfaith gives you a bit of most religions BY SUSAN HOGAN/ALBACH The Dallas Morning News ALLAS — She’s been Christian, Hindu, Unitarian and more. Now, instead of following a single religion, Rene Shepley-Ragan embraces them all. She calls her path “interfaith spirituality,” an identification she shares with a small but emerging group of Americans. They customize their spirituality by picking and choosing practices from the world’s religions — often without any particular attachment to doctrine. Some pray to Allah and to Jesus, chant like Sufis and meditate like Buddhists. Others light Jewish menorahs and perform Native American sage rituals. Shepley-Ragan celebrates the major holidays of most religions, from Passover to Christmas. At least three interfaith seminaries now operate in the New York City area alone. They teach the tenets of the world’s religions and how to perform spiritual rituals, from Christian baptisms to Jewish weddings to New Age energy healings. “A lot of people are finding that one religion doesn’t have all the answers for them,” said Shepley-Ragan, who leads an interfaith congregation in Moorestown, N.J “We help people discover their spirituality, but we don’t tell them what that should look like.” Followers call it “an integrative approach.” They downplay the differences among religions to focus on common threads such as love and mercy. It’s inconsequential to them, for example, that Christians teach that Jesus was the Messiah, Muslims say he was a prophet and Jews say he was neither. “In effect, it’s a new religion,” said John Lamoreaux, who teaches religion at Southern Methodist University. “There’s Buddhism, and there’s also Barnes & Noble Buddhism. A person can pick and choose from the world’s Role From 4D center organization in our church,” Eliason said. The women also briefly discussed the role of women in their religions. tradition and create a spirituality that has little connection with historical reality.” Rabbi Roger Ross, who heads New Seminary in New York, said disciples of an interfaith approach aren’t creating another religion. True, some people’s path is a spiritual stew, he said. But others embrace a primary religion and supplement it with practices from other faiths. His interfaith school’s guiding principle: “Never instead of, always in addition to.” “People come to the interfaith path thinking they’re the only ones who find one particular faith path isn’t enough,” said the rabbi, who attended a nondenominational Jewish seminary “Then they discover 100 classmates who show up for the same reason.” New Seminary says it has graduated more than 2,000 interfaith ministers since its founding by a priest, a rabbi, a minister and a swami in 1981. Some are hospital chaplains — people who deal with patients of all faith backgrounds. Others lead the estimated 100 new interfaith congregations that have sprung up nationally “People accuse us of practicing smorgasbord spirituality,” said the Rev. Susanna Stefanachi Macomb, an interfaith minister in New York, who has embraced the contemplative, mystical practices of Catholicism, — Buddhism, Hinduism and Sufism at different points. “They mean it to be derogatory, but there is truth to that. We’re seeking the essence of religion, which is spirituality — not dogmas. That is where you feel God.” Interfaith spirituality is different from the interfaith work done by the dominant faiths. Christians, Jews, Muslims and others have long met to discuss their beliefs to better understand their differences — but not to become one spiritual soup. Pope John Paul II, for example, has repeatedly gathered representatives from world religions to pray for Voelker said in the past 40 years she has seen many changes in the role of women in the Catholic Church, “not unlike the roles of women in society.” No longer are nuns like Voelker required to wear the traditional habit. Also she can serve Holy Communion to the sick, which was something only peace. In Dallas, Muslim, Jewish and Christian leaders lead occasional interfaith prayer services. But at the end of the prayers, the participants are still distinctly Muslims, Jews and Christians. The quest for religious identity is often at the heart of interfaith spirituality Many practitioners say they became disillusioned with their childhood faith and spent years bouncing from religion to religion searching for a better fit. “Then it’s like a light bulb goes on and you realize you don’t need to choose,” Shepley-Ragan said. “There’s no contradiction because the goal of all religions is basically the same” — only the paths to getting there are different. That thinking is common among interfaith ministers. Scholars say it’s partially an outgrowth of the growing religious pluralism. Three times as many Hindus live in the United States today as did a decade ago. American Muslims now outnumber Episcopalians, Jews or Presbyterians. Religious pluralism has changed even mainline Christian seminaries over the past two decades. Some that were once strictly centers for Christian studies now require comparative religion courses for divinity degrees. At least 30 employ non-Christian faculty. Connecticut’s Hartford Seminary, which trains Christians for ministry, is also home to a Muslim center. The seminary says its mission is to affirm “the goodness of religious differences.” But some seminaries balk at this approach. “No followerof Jesus can ever take the view that all religions are basically the same,” said Paige Patterson, president of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas, where only Southern Baptists teach theology World religions are taught mainly so graduates know what they’re up against when they go forth to evangelize. a priest or ordained deacon could do. She also can preside over a graveside service or a vigil. Winkel said when she entered the seminary, more than half the student body population were women. Women have been pastors for congregations for many years. Aslum said women in the Jewish faith can be rabbis. In the past eight years, Ogden’s Congregation Brith Sholem has had rabbi interns serve them, Aslum said. Of the eight, six have been women. Eliason said she _ has grown in her religion because of the variety of callings she has served. She has served in every auxiliary of her church. uc UICd s ALIU bei are Pastor France A. Insulation was also added, decreasing the gas bill for the building by two-thirds 4D from $750. The plan started after Equity One Inc. donated the building to the church after the property damage exceeded the building’s market value in August last year. Hammond and his wife, Linda, and the church members began renovating before the deal was even done. Standard-Examiner Directors for spiritual direction BY TONI WEINGARTEN The Dallas Morning News ALLAS — Cell phones, pagers, eDei television and other distractions sometimes make it hard to pray or hear God’s answer. And worship leaders are often too busy with administrative duties to help individuals deepen their personal connections to the holy. So some people are turning to spiritual directors to help them strengthen their relationships with God. “For a person on an intense spiritual pilgrimage, that generally requires developing a relationship with a spiritual companion,” said Shelly Vescovo, dean of the Anglican School of Theology, a division of the Episcopal Diocese of Dallas. Spiritual direction is not a profession. Directors hold other jobs and see only a few clients who usually pay a fee ona sliding scale. For instance, Sam Magill paid his direc- tor $90 an hour; others pay half that, less or nothing at all. Unlike therapists, spiritual directors are not licensed, nor is their training standardized throughout the country. In selecting a director, Liz Budd Ellman, the head of Spiritual Directors International, recommends interviewing at least three candidates and asking some key questions: What is the person’s training? To what spiritual tradition/faith do they belong? To what ethical guidelines do they adhere? Are they in spiritual direction themselves, and what kind of personal prayer life do they have? Spiritual direction has existed in various forms throughout the Christian tradition. There were 4th-century desert mystics who counseled seekers, and monks or nuns who guided medieval convent dwellers. In the 16th century, St. Ignatius wrote his “Spiritual Exercises,” which became the basis of direction as offered within the JeSuit community. With Vatican II, the Catholic Church opened more involvement to lay people, including spiritual direction. For 20 years the school has offered spiritual direction training to students, both lay and clergy, “It is a much more intense, focused endeavor and the function of a church/synagogue is different than what one goes to a spiritual director for,” Vescovo said. A growing number of people are embarking on such spiritual pilgrimages with a companion. In 1989, 400 spiritual directors meeting in Burlingame, Calif., formed Spiritual Directors International. Today, based in Bellevue, Wash., the group has about 4,000 American members, almost 700 more worldwide, and lists about 200 training or retreat centers in 41 States, including seven centers in Texas. “There is some kind of transformation in our culture, a larger rubric of the democratization of religious authority,” said Wade Clark Roof, chair of religious studies at the University of California at Santa Barbara. “There’s a tendency of people to assume that out of their lived experience, and that of a spiritual director, that they can grow and expand their spiritual insights, and that they don’t have to go to traditional religious authority, the clergy.” The surge of interest in spiritual direction may seem dramatic, until seen in historical context, according to the Rev Frederick Schmidt, director of spiritual life and formation at Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University. “One could rightly argue that the high tide of religious affiliation of the 1950s and ’60s was in some respects an anomaly in American history,” he said. So what is spiritual direction? “It isn’t about having visions or unusual phenomenon,” said Sister Thomas Bernard of Los Angeles, hoping to assuage those wondering if the practice is “woo-woo.” In 1983, Sister Thomas started the archdiocese of Los Angeles’ Spirituality Center — now the Spiritual Growth Center, located on the campus of Mount St. Mary’s College. In the center’s three-year program, about 25 students meet monthly for lectures on prayer, listening skills, spirituality and sexuality, multiculturalism, and other topics. They may also play the role of spiritual director in case studies. In their third year, students see clients under supervision.
