New Zion Baptist Church “Loyalty Day History” Celebrating 45 Years... “The Church Built By Faith” The ground breaking service for the New Zion Baptist Church was held on Sunday, May 16, 1954, under the pastorate of the late Reverend B.J. Washington. Some two years later, March 25, 1956, the first service was held in the new church. Each year since that time (Palm Sunday), New Zion celebrates its “Church Anniversary. © A New Zion church dedication service took place October 20-24, 1958 and on the Fourth Sunday, October 26, 1958. was held that Sunday evening. A dedication musical Guest ministers for the week, included the late Reverend L.D. Wilhams, M.L. Shakespeare, W.I. Monroe, Ira Lee Martin, Elder David Griffin, and the Sunday sermon was rendered by the late Dr. Wendell T: Liggins. That service acquired the name of “Loyalty Day.” Each year on the Fourth Sunday in October, New Zion holds this special dedicatory service, usually preceded by a revival... and today, marks our 45“ commemorative celebration. It is indeed an honor for us to observe our 45“ year of faithfulness and commitment to serving the Lord. It is our desire that you have been abundantly blessed by joining with us in this most spectal occasion. “The Lord bless thee and keep thee, The Lord make His face to shine upon thee, And be gracious unto thee, The Lord Gft up His countenance upon thee, And give thee peace.” Numbers 6:24-26 Acknowledgements .... As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. ° CRER ORO New Zion Baptist Church History The Beginning Available records indicate that in 1918 the Utah Baptist State Convention purchased a lot on Wall Avenue in Ogden, where the Congregation built the Wall Avenue Baptist Church. The church was incorporated on February 10, 1926. | First Pastor On October 2, 1930, the Rev. L.A. Platt of Ontario, CA, became the first Pastor of I §) ere TELE the Wall Avenue Baptist Church. He pastured for six years. Rev. B.]. Washington was called to Pastor New Zion on April 8, 1952 and under his leadership the congregation grew into the need of a new church building. Through this effort, Wall Avenue Baptist became New Zion Baptist Church. Rev. Washington pastured at New Zion for ten years. The Church Grows Ground Breaking Services Laying of Foundation Laying of Cornerstone First Church Services Dedication Services May 16, 1954 November 1954 October 21, 1954 March 25, 1956 October 26, 1958 The anniversary of the first church service is celebrated each year on Palm Sunday in the form of Church Anniversary Services and the dedication service is celebrated on the 4 Sunday in October in the form of Loyalty Day Service. Souls Were Saved The largest baptism on record is the first Sunday in October 1979, during the pastorate of Rev. Dr. N.L. Liggins, when 27 converts were baptized. Present Leadership Reverend James Abrams was called to New Zion in December 1997 and New Zion continues to lift up the name of Jesus. Pastor Abrams has accepted the tremendous responsibility of becoming the shepherd of this church. He is one of God's Knights and he wears spiritual armor. He has the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and hus sermons come from the heart. He preaches God's word with energy and zeal. He always points us to God and tells us of His love and we have continued in spiritual growth. A Christian’s Survival Kit Christians who stressed!” keep this kit available at all times will be “too blessed to be A Mirror ...to stop looking at others and start looking at ourselves. If we sweep up around our front doors we will not have time to worry about the front doors of others. “Deliver us from evil” (Matthew 6:13) A Trash Bag ... sometimes others, even Christian brothers and sisters, will bring us trash. Just put it in the trash bag. When confusion creeps into your group, take it to the dumpster. “A talebearer reveals secrets, but he who is of a faithful spirit conceals a matter.” (Proverbs 11:13) A Rubber Band ... we need to be flexible. Children of God full of the Holy Spirit understand that things do not always go as planned. We need to recognize that cooperation and flexibility are signs of spiritual growth. “Every way of a man ts right in his own eyes, but the Lord weighs the heart.” (Proverbs 21.2) A Flashlight ... to find our way. We all have some dark and cloudy days. We all have to face storms that will occasionally rage in our lives. Jesus said, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works.” (Matthew 5:16) A Telephone ... we can call Him up anytime and anywhere, for His line is “NEVER” busy. And He will “NEVER” put us on hold. However, we might get a message that says: Press one for the Father, press two for the Son, or press three for the Holy Spirit. “Lo, Iam with you always.” (Matthew 28:20) A Calculator ... to count all of your blessings. Count them one by one and see what God has done. We take most of His blessings for granted. We live in houses we did not build. We spend money we did not earn. We drink from grapevines we did not plant. We enjoy the sunshine, snow, wind, rain, light, darkness and His love. How often do we pause to thank the Blesser for His blessings? “I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 7:25a) Program Notes sf Special Thoughts ..... Scripture References: “Thus speaketh the Lord God of Israel, saying, ‘Write thee all the words that I have spoken unto thee in a book.’” (Jeremiah 30:2) 84401 New Zion Baptist Church * 2935 Lincoln Avenue * Ogden, Utah Fall Revival & Loyalty Day Celebration October 22, 23, 24 & 26, 2003 Program Checklist Sis. Frank Satterwhite, Sis. Desseria Satterwhite, Sis. Betty Smauldon, Sis. Sally Holmes, Pastor James Abrams and Sis. Lillie Holman The meeting was opened at 11:10 a.m. with a devotional song, “Jesus Keep Me Near the Cross” with prayer and scripture, Ephesians 4:29-30, rendered by Pastor Abrams. Business Items Discussed: Budget Allocations: Pastor Abrams noted that in accordance with the annual church budget, the allocated amount for this celebration is $2,000.00. Approximately $1,367. 00 has been spent/specifically designated (i.e., airline tickets and hotel accommodations for speaker, honorarium, etc.). That leaves approximately $643.00 for food, decorations, program printing, etc. Miscellaneous discussion ensued as to tentatively how much might be allocated for each of the pending expenditures. a. b. Pledge Captains: Bro. Satterwhite stated he has spoken to Bro. Dennis Carpenter, Bro. Richard Nelson, and Bro. James Dixon. He has yet to contact Bro. Roland Brown and Sis. Hazel Jones to confirm their availability to serve as captains. As is customary for this celebration, each church member has been asked to pledge $100.00 each and the designated captains are responsible for the collection of these membership pledges. “Tentative” territory assignments are as follows: (1) Bro. Dennis Carpenter: (2) Bro. Richard Nelson: Riverdale/South Ogden TBD (4) Sis. Hazel Jones: (5) Bro. Roland Brown: Parts of Ogden & Washington Terrace TBD (3) Bro. James Dixon: TBD c. Revival & Loyalty Day Church Bulletins/Programs: Sis. Smauldon volunteered to work with Sis. Holman with the compilation/design of the nightly bulletins and Sunday church bulletins. Pastor Abrams had some specific ideas as to what he would like to have done regarding programs/bulletins. It was determined that the approximate number of programs/ bulletins needed nightly would be as follows: Wednesday night (60); Thursday night (80); f° riday night (120); and Sunday (120+/exact number TBD). Bro. Satterwhite expressed the need to ensure the song “Lord, Send a Revival,” and the theme scripture text, 1 Peter 4:7-10, be included in the bulletins for each service. % a = d. Menu Selection and Preparation: Sis. Holmes noted the main meat [turkey and ham] and miscellaneous other standard food items previously agreed upon for this event. She estimates that it will cost approximately $350.00 to purchase the bulk of the food items. Desserts are customarily provided by membership donations. Sis. Holmes also tentatively identified members who usually volunteer to assist the Kitchen Ministry in preparation and serving of the food. She emphasized the need to have food set up in a buffet style with designated servers to ensure suitable food serving portions to keep food waste to a minimum. e. Church Decorations & Corsages: Sis. Betty Nunn, Chairperson of the Decorations Committee, was unable to attend this meeting. The question was raised as to what her needs will be (i.e., fresh flowers for the pulpit area, making of corsages/boot nears for designated program/service participants, etc.). Pastor Abrams noted funds must be allocated for this requirement. Sis. Smauldon and Sis. Holman volunteered to assist Sis. Nunn with making corsages/bootees, if she so desired. Sis. Smauldon will follow-up with Sis. Nunn on this matter to determine if she needs assistance and the specific number of these items that she needs. f. Nightly Service/Program Designations: Bro. Thousands of volunteers of all religions still flock to the dozens of Mother Houses in India each year to tend to the destitute and the dying. In the world’s largest de- mocracy — with a Christian minority and a secular constitution increasingly under attack by fundamentalists fighting for a Hindu nation Mother Teresa’s humanity is unquestioned. The sisters and brothers of her Missionaries of Charity are respected, in part, because they don’t try to convert others to their Catholic faith. Comfort For those whose wounds were treated by Mother Teresa under the shade of a banyan tree, or whose hunger was eased with a meager bowl of rice and lentils, her wrinkled smile and quiet grace felt like coming home. “We would sit and talk with her and it was like talking to our own mother,” said Lalji Srivastava, a 32year-old Hindu whose fingers are curled stiff by leprosy “She would tell us we were safe here in her home. First miracle Last year, John Paul approved a miracle credited to her intercession — Besra’s cure — which reportedly took place on the first anniversary of Mother Teresa’s death. A second miracle is needed to make her a saint. Besra, a _ slender and poised tribal woman from the village of Nakor, 280 miles north of Calcutta, told The Associated Press in an interview that the miracle which saved her life began with a vision. : The reports of Besra’s illness vary, and she herself claims not to really understand what ailed her Some doctors say she had a large malignant tumor in her abdomen; others diagnosed tubercular meningitis. Time to pray About 7 a.m. on Sept. 5, 1998 — the first anniversary of Mother Teresa’s death —the sisters told Besra that, though she was Hindu, the day was particularly holy and she might want to pray with them in their chapel. “When I went in for the prayers and looked at a photograph of Mother Teresa, I saw rays of light coming from her eyes and I felt very light and dizzy,” said Besra, who spoke with passionate certitude, despite telling the story hundreds of times to Vatican investigators and skeptical doctors and journal- ists. “I started shaking and my heart was beating very fast,” she said. “I felt scared as I didn’t know: what was happening to me.” Besra says the sisters helped her back to bed and told her to pray At 5 p.m., she watched as they lifted her sari, put a small medallion of Mother Mary on the large lump in her right abdomen, and told her to pray “At 1 am. the next morning, I awoke with a start and suddenly felt so light,” said Besra, whose family has 3350 Harti Blvd. , Ogden Rev. We need to make sure we elect people that feel there is a higher being that they will be accountable for their acts to,” McArthur told the gathering, which drew about 50 people. Robert Anderson, who has organized the distribution of Ten Commandments signs in protest of the removal of the Ten Commandments from an Alabama courthouse, said judges and “subversive forces like the ACLU” were working to do away with religion. “They will not be content until they win or we win,” Anderson said.
