Gospel music may have originated as hymns of praise and worship during religious gatherings, but it has increasingly gown into an independent form of music, with a lot of recognized artists specializing in this field. Gospel music 1s said to have its origin in the South, all the way back in the days of | slavery. The Blacks often faced punishment if they offended their White masters and weren't even permitted to do many things. So they took refuge in their faith and their songs clearly expressed their beliefs and their certainty that they will be delivered from their suffering. But this field of music isn’t just restricted to the experiences of the slaves however. Even predominately White groups performed their own gospel music, and to this day, there is still a distinct difference between the two styles. Modern gospel music got its start in the 1930’s when Thomas Dorsey, considered “The Father of Contemporary Gospel Music,” created songs of praise that were much more exuberant than the usual solemn church hymns. Gospel music took flight when more artists singing in this style came out, further paving the way for the development of this musical style. Today, gospel music is performed all over the world, with various artists gaining popularity and a generous fan base. The styles may vary from artist to artist, but the fact remains that gospel music is still an enthusiastic expression of faith, and will continue to enjoy support throughout the world. iv A Proper Perspective on the Ministry of Music One must understand that it is a Ministry: Being an expert musician and/or singer or does not make a person an effective minister of the Gospel. One must ...... Have a personal relationship with Christ Feel as strongly called of God and as consecrated to this ministry, as does the Minister of the spoken word Have an positive attitude and be approachable, ministering to the needs of others and not just one of displaying his/her own talents and abilities before the public Be dependent on the communion and direction of the Holy Spirit which provides an invaluable source of inspiration and confidence Be consistent in his/her spiritual discipline and growth as an artist (prayer, meditation, etc.) Have a personal, unrelenting commitment to EXCELLENCE “To truly Become the Best, You must Constantly Strive to Surpass Yourself” ‘The Blessings and Significance of an Effective Choir Rehearsal’ vi SES SEE BREE RRR REE EE Things to Cover in this Session Requirements to Become a Choir Member a.
