THE Lesson Subject: "God’s Call and Enabling" Scripture Lesson Text: Time: 1445 BC Place: Mount Sinai Golden Text: SUNDAY SCHOOL June 12, 1994 "Come Exodus 3:10-15a; 4:1-5, 10-12 now therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh, that thou mayest bring forth my people the children of Israel out of Egypt." Exodus 3:10 Today’s Aim Facts: to examine assurance the facts of God’s call of Moses and His to Moses. Principle: to illustrate that God gives assurance and support to His servants. Application: to encourage believers to follow God’s calling for their lives and to trust in His assurance and enabling. Practical Points 1. With God’s calling to a task come His enabling and sufficiency to do it. (Exod. 3:10-12a) 2. Knowledge of God’s character will give us comfort assurance as we follow His leading. (vss. 13-15) 3. and We should be more concerned with what God says than with what people might say. (4:1) 4. As servants of God, we must learn to see ourselves only as a vessel, or container, through. that God can continually fill and speak 5. God is not only aware of all of our deficiencies; He is also sovereign over them. guide and energize Moses’ very words. inadequacies and God promised to 6. Moses had been prepared for the work that he was assigned. The forty years in Egypt and the following forty years in the wilderness were not wasted years. God called a man who was busy in his daily work and not a man who was idle. AGE GROUP EMPHASIS Children: If you feel inadequate, remember that God has given you abilities and you must develop them. You must learn to accept what cannot be changed, whether it be physical features or mental capability. God has created you for a reason and He has a job for each of you to do. Moses felt physically and mentally inadequate to go up against Pharaoh but God helped him to realize that he could be and would be successful. Just as God enabled Moses, He also enables you. Continue to learn and do - what God wants you to do. ' Youth: Teenagers also need to be encouraged to accept your limitations as well as your strengths. Get involved in some form of Christian service. As with younger children, you have been created for a reason and God has a job for you to do. Consult with your teachers and superintendent for possible Christian service assignments. Adults; This is a good lesson from which to consider the handicapped. What about the needs of the handicapped? Does your Sunday School have a ministry to the handicapped? How effective is it? Could it be expanded? An excellent outreach would be to not only minister to the handicapped but assist them in ministering as well. -Source: Bible Expositor and Illuminator Union Gospel Press, Cleveland, OH — JESUS AND CHILDREN Questions, Answers And Supporting Scriptures About God 1. Jones "Black people have been duped into running from thinking it was the White man’s book." -The Rev. Walter A. McCray the Bible, In determining the race of biblical characters, religious scholars consider legends, languages, Bible translations and other historical manuscripts. are differences But there is some disagreement. of emphasis, Black scholars and Although there an increasing number of White biblical scholars agree on the eight most widely accepted Black personalities in the Bible: @ The Queen of Sheba. The queen, who visited King solomon and marveled at his wisdom, was queen of Ethiopia and Egypt. Scriptures: I Kings 10:1; IJ Chronicles 9:1; St. Matthew 12:42. @ Zipporah. She was Sarah’s Egypitan handmaiden, who eventually had Abraham’s first son, Ishamel. Scripture: Gen. 16:1 & 3; 21-9. ® Pharaoh Tirharkah. Kings 19:9. ® Asenath. Scripture: II She was the Egyptian wife of Joseph, given to him by the Pharaoh. Ephraim. He was an Ethiopian king. Although few, if any, believe in the "curse of Ham", which was used as a justification for slavery, some experts, like Dr. Walter A. McCray, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Chicago, maintain that Blacks are indeed descendants of Ham, the youngest of Noah’s three sons. Ham - translated from Hebrew to mean "hot, heated or Black" - was called the father of Canaan in the Bible. Canaan, along with Cush (or ancient Ethiopia), Mizraim (Early Egypt) and Phut are considered to be Ham’s direct offspring. If this is true, according to some scholars, at least one book of the Bible was written by a Black man, namely Zephaniah. Called the "son of Cushi," Zephaniah was counted among the minor prophets of the Bible. In agreeing that Zephaniah was Black, some read King Solomon’s lyrical prose in The Songs of Solomon and conclude that he, too, was a Black man, and that this song-like book was devoted to his relationship with the Queen of Sheba. Scholars base their characterizations of biblical figures on a few basic hypothesis set forth, in part, by Dr. Charles B. Copher, a leading authority on historical analysis of Blacks in the Bible. These assumptions are that (1) race was not the social and political issue that it is today; (2) most Bible activity took place in areas historically populated by people of color, such as the near Middle East and Northeast Africa; and (3) "blackness" can be determined by scriptural references to skin color, Black ancestry and features characteristic of Black peoples. Religious scholars say the major point is that the Bible depicted a multicultural world and..."it is this rich mosaic of diverse people in the Bible that makes it very compelling." Order and Meaning of The Lord’s Table The Lord’s Supper is one of the two ordinances or sacraments of the Church for this age, the other being water baptism. The Lord’s Supper is a proclamation of the Lord’s_ death. It is never just a "whatchamacallit" we do from time to time. There is no magic in it. There is faith behind it, and because of that faith there can be miracles involved in the meaningful celebration of the supper. Every celebration of the Lord’s Supper is a proclamation of Jesus’ death on the cross for us. It is the central message of the Christian faith. We may seek to discover innovative approaches for celebrating the Supper, but we are only trying to find ways to make the death of Christ more real to us and to point up the significance of the © Lord’s death. Time and Place: Historical details are important in the Bible. God works in history. His revelations are given to people struggling with their trials and troubles in the world. Jesus was crucified after a brief ministryof about three years. The place was outside the city walls of Jerusalem. Jesus’ death on the cross made salvation available to us: The cross was the culmination of God’s plan for our salvation. "He destined us in love to be his sons through Jesus Christ," wrote Paul in Eph. 1:5. "In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace which he lavished upon us" wv. 7-8. AS we prepare to take communion, let us remember the scripture (1 Cor 11:29) -"For — he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body." This compels us to turn our thoughts to the blood and body of Jesus, putting all other thoughts out of our minds, and recall once again that he died for us and paid our sin debt at Calvary. It'does not mean that we must become "good enough" to eat and drink - for we can never be "good enough". -The Living Bible New Zion Baptist Church OR CK OR OR ROR KOK KKK RR KOR OKO KOK OK EK _ Minister in Charge Announcing Clerk Chairperson Benevolent Committee Chairperson BYU (Nurture for Baptist Churches) Director Rev. It is our sincere desire that this service of worship will prove to be a blessing to you. Here, we have no creed but Christ, no purpose except to serve the needs of any who come our way as best we can in the name of the Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We believe that every follower of Christ can and should interpret, assume and practice the love of God in his own life. We do not believe that differences of opinions have a place in breaking the fellowship of Christians. We turn to our Bible as the source of our practices and teachings. We strive to catch the spirit of Christ’s teachings as they are revealed in the words of God and apply them with common sense to our own day. WE BELIEVE that the religion of Jesus Christ makes each one of us a servant to the best that is in life. We believe that the religion of Jesus Christ is a happy one. We believe it is better to love than to hate. Therefore, we welcome you joyously to this worship service. We sincerely pray that God’s richest blessings may be upon you. You have blessed us by your presence today. WE ARE AFFILIATED with the Intermountain General Baptist Association and the National Baptist Convention USA, Inc. Our operational budget is subscribed by the tithes and free will offerings of the members and friends. If you are seeking a Church Home, you are cordially invited to become a part of this fellowship. Membership may be obtained from another Baptist Church, through letter, confession of Christian experience, and candidate for water baptism, for those who have never confessed their hope in Christ.
