Davis, Pastor of Calvary Baptist in Salt Lake City, Utah will be the officiating pastor. Please mark your calendars for this momentous occasion! By the grace and mercy of God we have come to see the end of another year 2007. As God continues to pour out the gifts of His goodness, patience, love and favor I resolve in 2008 to: Reflect and thank Him for enabling us to see the close of another year; To do whatever is most to God’s glory; To do my duty, for the good of mankind in general; Never to do anything, which I should be afraid to do, if it were the last hour of my life; To study the Scriptures steadily, constantly, and frequently; To ask myself at the end of every day, week, month and year if I could possibly have done better; e Until I die, not to act as if I were my own, but entirely and altogether God's. Remember... that a vow to follow God is not a casual promise. Rather, it is a solemn and serious declaration and that through the power of the Holy Spirit — we can renew every day. oe ney _jed 8 “pDirectory i ae rd Ff ig oF hin ge —— aely ° ae eae a HAPPY Abcw yeok ~ OPPY Aer Qa w HAPPY Age near Dr. Bruce Davis, Sr. Installation Installation Service The Pastoral Installation Service of Reverend Dr. Bruce Davis, Sr., will be held on Sunday, January 27, 2008 at 3:30 p.m. Theme: , “Walking in Love Doing the Will of God from the Heart” (Ephesians 5:2 & 6:6) The Reverend Dr. France A. HAPPY Abcy oor w OPPY Nec deo’ w HAPPY Agey neat ‘Another Chance... A new year has begun and God has given us another chance to make those “new year” resolutions we make each and every year, at least that’s what most of us think! We are not given a new year to MAKE resolutions; we are given another chance to KEEP resolutions. We speak out of our mouths, yet we hardly ever put our words into action for long. We do not say “we will start out doing this or that”, we say “we will do this or that”, yet, we do not follow through. What if Jesus’ journey into the world and His reason for it halted halfway each new year. Promises like going to church every Sunday, attending Bible Study, and Sunday School, working harder in the church, and pledging a vow to God to help build the Kingdom. What are you going to do with your chance? Let us remember the reason for the season, Christ has come to give us another chance. Let us take hold to the blessings of Christ’s birth and mold our lives after His. Let us give gifts in celebration of His coming; gifts of love, forgiveness and service. Gifts that include the fruit of the Spirit and gifts that will come back to bless our daily lives abundantly! -<-¢-~ Dr. Bruce Davis, Sr., Senior Pastor | Bro. William Turner, Jr., CA ___| Sis. RG ae My chagrin rests in the fact that every year, racial and ethnic minorities mentioned as being attracted becoming residents of early Ogden are confined to the Greek, Japanese, Chinese, Italian and Mexican immigrants, with no mention of the African-Americans who were also here during the period and before. A careful research of Utah and the history of the West, reveals that the African-American’s contributions to early Ogden’s work-ethic, and their contribution to success of Ogden’s business. and industry is well documented. Although African-Americans could not be considered “immigrants” since they were brought to the Americas in the early 1500's to provide labor in the building of an early America’s agrarian economy, in Utah, their presence was felt as early as the earliest fur-traders, trappers, and explorers. Ogden can especially be proud of the fact that their precious, underpaid labor was demonstrated in various positions, in serving Junction City and the Union Pacific Railroad, well. My own parents, Scott and Gertrude Stewart, migrated to Ogden in 1913, and were know and respected not for the kind of work they performed, but for the content of their character and good citizenship, as taxpaying, Ogden City property owners all of their lives. Two churches during this era (in 1903 through 1915), were funded and erected by early Ogden blacks. One, was the Wall Avenue Baptist Church which was located on 27" & Wall, and the other, the Embry Chapel A.M.E. Church (since torn down) was located near 29" and Pingree Avenue. Opportunities for blacks during the period were regulated by attitudes that we, in 1944, often forget. Nevertheless, it was in such an atmosphere, and because of these attitudes that many black businesses flourished, such as the famous “Porters & Waiters Club” (which serviced porters and waiters by the contract with the railroads), and there were other businesses such as barbershops, restaurants, and beauty shops. I find it intolerable not speak about this lack of inclusion of the African’s early history. For the African-American did, in their own unique and valuable way, provide much needed services, cultural contributions, and financial remuneration to the early Ogden community. Betty Stewart Moore is a life-long resident of Ogden. Once again, as we celebrated Black History Month in February, it is imperative that we ask ourselves this question, “are we making progress?” Are we, as individuals taking advantage of the opportunities made possible by the suffering and protests of our parents and grandparents? Are local and state governments ensuring that we have an equal share of quality education and fair treatment by upholding the laws thev are sworn to obey? Are our nation’s leaders enacting legislation to ensure that every citizen has the chance to achieve their dreams? If you feel the answer to any of these questions is no, then it’s time to take a close look in the mirror and get up and get involved so next year at this time when we ask ourselves “are we making progress?’, we can, without hesitation say “yes!” Shut-in At Home i Sis. God gets all the glory for the work He did through New Zion’s Youth Department with the Women and Girl’s Health Awareness Conference on March 8". Approximately 60+ persons were in attendance. Keynote Speaker, Dr. Jessica Greenwood, University of Utah, Department of Family Medicine gave an inspiring presentation on health issues relating to African American females. Dr. Greenwood shared her 3 P’s (passion, patience, and perseverance) to achieving any goal one may set. Overall, achieving the goal has a lot to do with how one takes care of their physical body. Health related issues can hinder the goal. A question and answer period was put to the floor and then all was dismissed to breakout sessions relating to abstinence, self esteem, abuse and HIV testing. After a nice lunch, the conference reassembled for a panel discussion lead by nurses, social workers, teachers and youth program personnel. The youth showed great participation. The conference was moved to the sanctuary where Jamie Stylz gave her rendition of hip-hop rap and our very own youth, Arica Carpenter and Jolicia Sattiewhite performed a praise dance to “Now Behold the Lamb”. The conference came to a close with remarks by New Zion’s Youth Directory, Bro. Dennis Carpenter and Pastor Bruce Davis. Presentations of T-shirts and Attendance Certificates were given out. | cy L You May Be Eligible to Receive \ t- ‘3.<"" ‘the Economic Stimulus Payment!! Youth Department Fundraiser Mother’s Day Booklets The Youth Department of Zion is sponsoring a fundraiser that will allow them to have funds which they can use for purposes other than those funded through the church budget. With the vision God is showing our Pastor, the Youth Department would like to help by building a treasury to allow them to be able to bless areas in their own ministry as well as other ministries as the Lord lays on their heart. The fundraiser will be the start of the youth learning how to “handle their own” by being a blessing to others as well as helping to take care themselves. They will learn what it is to give, as well as to receive. It is the Youth Department’s hope, that in doing “our part”, we will be aiding the future financial needs of New Zion when the Lord brings about the vision for us. The fundraiser will be a “Mother’s Day Booklet”. This booklet comes in the form of a Sunday bulletin format. Names of mothers, grandmothers, aunts, godmothers, deceased mothers, mothers to be, and “other” mothers (those who you look at as a mother) can be inserted in the Mother’s Day Booklet for a donation of $2 per name. A booklet for each donation will be available to give to the named mother. Please assist the Youth Department in their first fundraiser in 2008 by donating through your submission of women in your life that you love who have been chosen by God to mother in whatever capacity she has. You can see any Youth Leader for additional information. o New Zion Historical Committee ... O mYNOfZ Course Title: “How the Bible Came to Be” .Volume 1, Issue 8 CHRISTIAN EDUCATION Have you ever thought about the evolution of Christian Education? Why “the education and _formation of persons in the Christian church in all areas of life in light of the Christian faith (Westminster) has become essential to our development? excerpt that may help you with answering these questions. Here is an In 1559 John Calvin himself founded a school, the Geneva Academy, and he was very influential in creating Christian schools throughout the city of Geneva. Calvin understood that for the effects of the Reformation to continue, providing children a Christian education was essential. John Knox helped form Christian schools throughout Scotland and these schools operated in conjunction with both the church and the state. Holding Fast: Christian Education Across the Centuries Article originally from Teacher to Teacher, October 2003 issue (continued) Slowly, the modern Christian school movement gained momentum. It began to flourish in the 1950s and 60s, and by the 1970s and 80s, the movement had exploded. All across the United States, faithful people were planting Christian schools, thousands of which continue today. Several Christian colleges and universities rose to the occasion and began training teachers with a view toward Christian education. Christian publishers began producing educational texts and materials, and today many Christian textbooks are available at all grade levels—even some at the college level. Modern technology continues to make Christian education even more accessible for many families with video, satellite, and computer-based classes and curriculum. The age-old battle between Christian education and secular education continues today. And many are wondering where Christian education is headed in the future. For Christian education to thrive, pastors must teach their congregations its importance. Universities must train quality Christian teachers. Christian textbook publishers must produce thoroughly biblical, educationally sound materials and Christian educators must get these truths and resources into the hands and minds of the students. Sunday schools in England and in the United States contributed greatly to the cause of Christian education. In the late 1700s the Sunday school movement began to thrive in Great Britain, with Robert Raikes being one of its most wellknown leaders. Sunday schools began as a separate entity from the church with the primary goal of offering religious and moral education to poor children on Sundays. As the movement progressed, it broadened in scope to reach a larger variety of children. Sunday schools soon spread to the United States where by the nineteenth century more than 100,000 were in operation. Above all, we must invoke God’s hand of protection and blessing upon so great an endeavor. For we would surely not want the Christian to slip out of Christian education. Not on our watch. (By Walter G. Fremont, Dean Emeritus of the School of Education at Bob Jones University, with Stephanie Ludlum.
