The Work of the Holy Spirit CHURCH COVENANT Having been led, as we believe, by the Spirit of God, to receive the Lord Jesus Christ as our Saviour, And on the profession of our faith, having been baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. We do now, in the presence of God, angels, and this assembly, most DATE NAME CURRENT EXPENSES TITHES BUILDING SPECIAL & SUNDAY SCHOOL MISSIONARY & BENEVOLENCE OTHER OFFERING REGENERATION John 3:1-7; Romans 10:8-11 There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know solemnly and joyfully enter into covenant with one another, as one body in Christ. that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. We engage, therefore, by the aid of the Holy Spirit, to walk together in Christian love; to strive for the advancement of this church, in knowledge, holiness, and comfort; Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. To promote its prosperity and spirituality; to sustain its worship, ordinances, discipline, and doctrines; Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born? To contribute cheerfully and regularly to the support of the ministry, the expenses of the church, the relief of the poor, and the spread of the gospel through all nations. Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. We also engage to maintain family and secret devotions: to religiously educate our children: to seek the salvation of our kindred and acquaintances: That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. To walk circumspectly in the world: to be just in our dealings, faithful in our engagements, and exemplary in our deportment; Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. To avoid all tattling, backbiting, and excessive anger; But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; To abstain from the sale and use of intoxicating drinks as a beverage, and to be zealous in our efforts to advance the kingdom of our Saviour. We further engage to watch over one another in brotherly love; To remember each other in prayer: to aid each other in sickness and distress: to cultivate Christian sympathy in feeling and courtesy in speech; To be slow to take offense, but always ready for reconciliation, and mindful of the rules of our Saviour to secure it without delay. We moreover engage that when we remove from this place we will, as soon as possible, unite with some other church, where we can carry out the spirit of this covenant and the principles of God’s Word. TRAINING IN THE CHRISTIAN HOME Deuteronomy 6:1-7; Proverbs 22:6; 2 Timothy 1:5-6 Now these are the commandments, the statutes, and the judgment, which the Lord your God commanded to teach you, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go to possess it: That thou mightest fear the Lord thy God, to keep all his statutes and That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. THE MISSIONARY CHURCH Acts 1:8; Mark 16:15-16; John 17:18-21; Acts 13:1-5 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not his commandments, which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son’s son all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged. Here therefore, O Israel, and observe to do it; that it may be well with thee, and that ye may increase mightily, as the Lord God of thy fathers hath promised thee, in the land that floweth with milk and honey. Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God is one Lord: And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also. Wherefore I put thee in remembrance that thou stir up the gift of God, which is in thee by the putting on of my hands. shall be damned. As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth. Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. Now there were in church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away. So they, being sent forth by the Holy Ghost, departed unto Seleucia; and from thence they sailed to Cyprus. And when they were at Salamis, they preached the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews: and they had also John to their minister. THE IDEAL MOTHER Proverbs 31:10-31 Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. SANCTIFICATION Galatians 5:22-25; I Thessalonians 4:1-7 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life. She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands. She is like the merchants' ships; she bringeth her food from afar. She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Furthermore then we beseech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and more. For ye know what commandments we gave you by the Lord Jesus. For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication: That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour; Not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God: That no man go beyond and defraud his brother in any matter: because that the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also have forewarned you and testified. For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness. hands to the needy. THE PARABLE OF THE GOOD SAMARITAN Luke 10:29-37 But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, and who is my neighbour? And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. a portion to her maidens. She considereth a field, and buyeth it; with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard. She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms. She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not by night. She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff. She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy. She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet. She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple. Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land. She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant. Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come. She openth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her. Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all. Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain; but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates. FATHER’S INSTRUCTIONS Proverbs 4:1-4, 10-27 Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him, And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn and took care of him. understanding. For I give you good doctrine, forsake ye not my law. For I was my father’s son, tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother. He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live. Hear, O my son, and receive my sayings; and the years of thy life shall be many. I have taught thee in the way of wisdom; I have led thee in right paths. When thou goest, thy steps shall not be straitened; and when thou runnest, thou shalt not stumble. Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her, for she is thy life. Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men. Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away. And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee. For they sleep not, except they have done mischief; and their sleep is taken away, unless they cause some to fall. Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among thieves? The way of the wicked is darkness: they know not at what they stumble. My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings. And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise. For they eat the bread of wickedness, and drink the wine of violence. But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day. Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart. For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh. Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life. Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee. Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee. Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established. Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil. THE LORD’S SUPPER 1 Corinthians 11:23-34 For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered THE BEATITUDES Matthew 5:1-12 unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread: And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him: And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying, after the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. For as often as ye eat this bred, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come. Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood the Lord. Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread, and drink of that cup. Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep. For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you. But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world. Wherefore, my brethren, when ye come together to eat, tarry one for another. And if any man hunger, let him eat at home; that ye come not together unto condemnation. and the rest will I set in order when I come. JESUS CELEBRATES THE PASSOVER A PSALM OF TRUST Psalm 91 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. Luke 2:41-49 Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover. Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler. And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast. Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it. Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday. But they supposing him to have been in the company, went a day’s journey; and they sought him among their kinfolk and acquaintance. And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him. And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them and asking them questions. And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers. And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing. And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father’s business. GOD THE CREATOR Genesis 1:1-5; 2:4-7; Psalm 33:6-9 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee. Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked. Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet. Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name. He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him. With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation. THE MODEL PRAYER Luke 11:1; Matthew 6:5-15 And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples. And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day. These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens, And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the Lord God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground. But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground. love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. verily I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking. Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him. After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. Give us this day our daily bread. By the word of the Lord were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. He gathereth the waters of the sea together as an heap: he layeth up the depth in storehouses. Let all the earth fear the Lord: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him. For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast. BAPTISM Matthew 28:18-20; Romans 6:3-11 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. GROWING IN GRACE 2 Peter 1:2-11; 3:17-18 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure; for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall: Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. For he that is dead is freed from sin. Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness. Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth he liveth unto God. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen. PRAISING THE LORD Psalm 147 Praise ye the Lord: for it is good to sing praises unto our God; for it is pleasant; and praise is comely. The Lord doth build up Jerusalem: he gathereth together the outcasts of Israel. He healeth the broken in heart and bindeth up their wounds. He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names. TEMPERANCE Proverbs 20:1; Romans 14:1-8, 16-23; I Corinthians 3:16-17 Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite. The Lord lifteth up the meek; he casteth the wicked down to the ground. Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise. Sing unto the Lord with thanksgiving; sing praise upon the harp unto our God; Him that is weak in the faith receive ye, but not to doubtful disputations. Who covereth the heaven with clouds, who prepareth rain for the earth, who maketh grass to grow upon the mountains. For one believeth that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eateth herbs. He giveth to the beast his food, and to the young ravens which cry. Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth: for God hath received him. Who art thou that judgest another man’s servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand. One man exteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind. He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks. For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself. For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord; whether we live therefore, or die, we are the Lord’s. Let not then your good be evil spoken of: For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost. For he that in these things serveth Christ is acceptable to God, and approved of men. Let us therefore follow after the thinks which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another. For meat destroy not the work of God. All things indeed are pure; but it is evil for that man who eateth with offence. (continued on next page) It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor any thing whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak. He delighteth not in the strength of the horse: he taketh not pleasure in the legs of a man. The Lord taketh pleasure in them that fear him, in those that hope in his mercy. Praise the Lord, O Jerusalem; praise thy God, O Zion. For he hath strengthened the bars of thy gates; he hath blessed thy children within thee. He maketh peace in thy borders, and filleth thee with the finest of the wheat. He sendeth forth his commandment upon earth: his word runneth very swiftly. He giveth snow like wool: he scattereth the hoarfrost like ashes. He casteth forth his ice like morsels: who can stand before his cold? He sendeth out his word, and melteth them: he causeth his wind to blow, and the waters flow. He sheweth his word unto Jacob, his statutes and his judgments unto Israel. He hath not dealt so with any nation: and as for his judgments, they have not known them. Praise ye the Lord. THANKSGIVING Psalms 92:1-5; 95:1-7; 107:40-43 It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord, and to sing praises unto thy name, O most High: To shew forth thy lovingkindness in the morning, and thy faithfulness every night. Upon an instrument of ten strings, and upon the psaltery; upon the harp with a solemn sound. For thou, Lord, hast made me glad through thy work: I will triumph in the Hast thou faith? have it to thyself before God. Happy is he that condemneth not himself in that thing which he alloweth. works of thy hands. And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin. O come, let us sing unto the Lord: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation. Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms. If any man defile the temple of God him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are. For the Lord is great God, and a great King above all gods. THE SHEPHERD PSALM Psalm 23 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Ye, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. O Lord, how great are thy works! and thy thoughts are very deep. In his hand are the deep places of the earth: the strength of the hills is his also. The sea is his, and he made it: and his hands formed the dry land. O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the Lord our maker. For he is our God; and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. Today if ye will hear his voice; He poureth contempt upon princes, and causeth them to wander in the wilderness, where there is no way. Yet setteth he the poor on high from affliction, and maketh him families like a flock. The righteous shall see it, and rejoice: and all iniquity shall stop her mouth. Whoso is wise, and will observe these things, even they shall understand the lovingkindness of the Lord. THE LIFE AND MINISTRY OF JESUS Luke 4:14-20; Matthew 4:23-25 And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about. THE PRE-EXISTENCE OF JESUS John 1:1-14; 3;16-17 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word Was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all. And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and , as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. written, The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To Preach the acceptable year of the Lord. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. CHRIST AND IMMORTALITY I Corinthians 15:19-22, 49-58 If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable. But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept. For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people. And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them. And there followed him great multitudes of people from Galilee, and from Decapolis, and from Jerusalem, and from Judaea, and from beyond Jordan. THE CHRISTIAN DEATH 2 Corinthians 5:1-10; Revelations 14:13 For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in heavens. For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven: If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked. For we that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened: not for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. swallowed up of life. And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly. Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit. Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption. Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord: (For we walk by faith, no by sight:) We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him. For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord. THE WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT John 16:5-15 But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou? But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart. CHRIST'S CONCERN FOR CHILDREN Matthew 18:1-6, 10; Mark 9:37; 10:13-16 At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven? And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them, And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted; and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven. Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: Of sin, because they believe not on me; O righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you. Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoso shall receive on such little child in my name receiveth me. But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea. Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven. Whosoever shall receive one of such children in my name, receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me, receiveth not me, but him that sent me. And they brought young children to him, that he should touch them: and his disciples rebuked those that brought them. But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God. Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein. And he took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them. 1. BECAUSE HE LIVES God sent His Son, they called Him Jesus; He came to love heal, and forgive; He lived and died to buy my pardon. An empty grave is there to prove my Savior lives. Because He lives I can face tomorrow; Because He lives all fear is gone; Because I know He holds the future, And life is worth living just because He lives. I AM ON THE BATTLEFIELD FOR MY LORD I am on the battlefield for my Lord, I’m on the battlefield for my Lord; And I promised him that I would serve Him till I die. I’m on the battlefield for my Lord. I was alone and idle, I was a sinner too, I heard a voice from heaven, Say there is work to do, I took the Master’s hand and I joined the Christian band I’m on the battlefield for my Lord. I am on the battlefield for my Lord, I’m on the battlefield for my Lord; And I promised him that I would serve Him till I die. I’m on the battlefield for my Lord. I left my friends and kindred bound for the Promised Land. The grace of God upon me, the Bible in my hand. In distant lands I trod, crying sinner come to God, I’m on the battlefield for my Lord. I am on the battlefield for my Lord, I’m on the battlefield for my Lord; And I promised him that I would serve Him till I die. I’m on the battlefield for my Lord. Now when I met my Savior, I met Him with a smile. He healed my wounded spirit, and owned me as His child. Around the throne of grace. He appoints my soul a place, I’m on the battlefield for my Lord. I am on the battlefield for my Lord, I’m on the battlefield for my Lord; And I promised him that I would serve Him till I die. I’m on the battlefield for my Lord. How sweet to hold a newborn baby, And feel the pride and joy He gives; but greater still the calm assurance, This child can face uncertain days because He lives. Because He lives I can face tomorrow; Because He lives all fear is gone; Because I know He holds the future, And life is worth living just because He lives. And then one day I’ll cross the river; I’ll fight life’s final war with pain; And then as death gives way to victory, I’ll see the lights of glory and I’ll know He lives. Because He lives I can face tomorrow; Because He lives all fear is gone; Because I know He holds the future, And life is worth living just because He lives. LOVE LIFTED ME I was sinking deep in sin, far from the peaceful shore, Very deeply stained within, sinking to rise no more; But the Master of the sea heard my despairing cry, from the waters lifted me, now safe am I. Love lifted me, Love lifted me. When nothing else could help, Love lifted me. All my heart to Him I give, Ever to Him I'll cling, In His blessed presence live, Ever His praises sing. Love so mighty and so true merits my soul's best songs; faithful, loving service too, to Him belongs. Love lifted me, Love lifted me. When nothing else could help, Love lifted me. Souls in danger, look above, Jesus completely saves; He will lift you by His love out of the angry waves. He's the Master of the sea, Billows His will obey; He your Savior wants to be saved today. LIFT HIM UP All in my house, I'm going to let it shine, Oh, All in my house, I'm going to let it shine, All in my house, I'm going to let it shine, Let it shine, Let it shine, Let it shine. How to reach the masses, men of ev’ry birth, For an answer Jesus gave the key: “And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, Will draw all men unto Me.” I’m not going to make shine, I’m just going to let it shine, (chorus) I’m not going to make shine, I’m just going to let it shine, I’m not going to make shine, I’m just going to let it shine, Let it shine, Let it shine, Let it shine. Lift Him up, (Lift the precious Savior up) Lift Him up, (Lift the precious Savior up) Still He speaks from eternity: “And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, Will draw all men unto Me.” Oh! the world is hungry for the Living Bread, Lift the Savior up for them to see; Trust Him, and do not doubt the words that he said, “I’ll draw all men unto Me.” AT THE CROSS Alas! and did my Savior bleed? and did my Sov’reign die? Would He devote that sacred head for such a worm as I? At the cross, at the cross where I first saw the light, And the burden of my heart rolled away (rolled away) It was there by faith I received by sight, And now I am happy all the day! Don’t exalt the preacher, don’t exalt the pew, Preach the Gospel simple, full and free; Prove Him and you will find that promise is true, “I’ll draw all men unto Me.” Lift Him up by living as a Christian ought, Let the world in you the Savior see; Then men will gladly follow Him who once taught, “I’ll draw all men unto Me.” Was it for crimes that I have done He groaned upon the tree? Amazing pity! grace unknown! And love beyond degree! PASS ME NOT At the cross, at the cross where I first saw the light, And the burden of my heart rolled away (rolled away) It was there by faith I received by sight, And now I am happy all the day! Well might the sun in darkness hide and shut his glories in, When Christ, the mighty Maker, died For man the creature’s sin. At the cross, at the cross where I first saw the light, And the burden of my heart rolled away (rolled away) It was there by faith I received by sight, And now I am happy all the day! But drops of grief can ne’er repay The debt of love I owe; Here, Lord, I give myself away Tis all that I can do! At the cross, at the cross where I first saw the light, And the burden of my heart rolled away (rolled away) It was there by faith I received by sight, And now I am happy all the day! REVIVE US AGAIN We praise Thee, O God, for the Son of Thy love, For Jesus who died and is now gone above. Hallelujah! Thine the glory, Hallelujah! Amen; Hallelujah! Thine the glory; Revive us again. We praise Thee, O God, for Thy Spirit of light, Who has shown us our Saviour, and scattered our night. Hallelujah! Thine the glory, Hallelujah! Amen; Hallelujah! Thine the glory; Revive us again. Pass me not, O gentle Savior, Hear my humble cry, While on others Thou art calling, do not pass me by. Savior, Savior, Hear my humble cry; While on others Thou art calling, Do not pass me by. Let me at a throne of mercy, Find a sweet relief; Kneeling there in deep contrition, Help my unbelief. Savior, Savior, Hear my humble cry; While on others Thou art calling, Do not pass me by. Trusting only in Thy merit, Would I seek Thy face; Heal my wounded, broken spirit, Save me by Thy grace. Savior, Savior, Hear my humble cry; While on others Thou art calling, Do not pass me by. Thou the Spring of all my comfort, More than life to me, Whom have I on earth besid Thee? Whom in heav’n but Thee? Savior, Savior, Hear my humble cry; While on others Thou art calling, Do not pass me by. SILENT NIGHT! HOLY NIGHT! Silent night! Holy night! All is calm, all is bright, Round yon virgin mother and Child, All glory and praise to the Lamb that was slain, Who has borne all our sins, and has cleansed every stain. Hallelujah! Thine the glory, Hallelujah! Amen; Hallelujah! Thine the glory; Revive us again. Revive us again, fill each heart with Thy love; May each soul be rekindled with fire from above. Hallelujah! Hark! the herald angels sing, “Glory to the newborn King” Hail the heav’n-born Prince of Peace! Hail the Son of righteousness! Light an life to all he brings, Risen with healing in His wings; Mild He lays His glory by, Born that man no more may die; Born to raise the sons of earth; Born to give them second birth. Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe, We shall overcome some day. Come, desire of nations, come! fix in us Thy humble home; Rise, the woman’s conquering seed, Bruise in us the serpent’s head; Adam’s likeness now efface, Stamp Thine image in its place; Second Adam from above, Reinstate us in Thy love. The Lord will see us through The Lord will see us through,, The Lord will see us through some day, Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe, The Lord will see us through some day, Hark! the herald angels sing, “Glory to the newborn King” We’ll walk hand in hand, we’ll walk hand in hand, We’ll walk hand in hand some day; Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe, GUIDE ME, O THOU GREAT JEHOVAH We’ll walk hand in hand some day; We are not afraid, We are not afraid, We are not afraid today, Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe, We are not afraid today, The truth shall make us free, The truth shall make us free, The truth shall make us free some day; Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe, The truth shall make us free some day; We shall live in peace, We shall live in peace, We shall live in peace some day; Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe, We shall live in peace some day; AMAZING GRACE Amazing grace how sweet the sound, That saved a wretch like me! I once was lost but now I'm found, Was blind but now I see. 'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace my fears relieved, How precious did that grace appear, The hour I first believed! Thro' many dangers, toils and snares I have already come; 'Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far, And grace will lead me home. When we've been there ten thousand years, Bright shining as the sun, We've no less days to sing God's praise, Than when we'd first begun. HAVE THINE OWN WAY, LORD! Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way! Thou art the Potter, I am the clay: Mould me and make me After Thy will, While I am waiting, Yielded and still. Have Thine own way, Lord! Have Thine own way! Hold o’er my being Absolute sway! Fill with Thy Spirit Till all shall see Christ only, always, Living in me! A CHARGE TO KEEP I HAVE A charge to keep I have, A God to glorify, Who gave His Son my soul to save, And fit it for the sky. Help me to watch and pray, And on Thyself rely, Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah, Pilgrim thro’ this barren land, I am weak, but Thou art might, Hold me with Thy powerful hand; Bread of Heaven, Feed me till I want no more; Bread of Heaven, Feed me till I want no more; Open now the crystal fountain Whence the healing waters flow; Let the fiery, cloudy pillar lead me all my journey thro; Strong Deliverer, Be Thou still my Strength and Shield; Strong Deliverer, Be Thou still my Strength and Shield; When I tread the verge of Jordan, Bid my anxious fears subside; Bear me thro’ the swelling current, Land me safe on Canaan’s side. Songs of praises I will ever give to Thee; Songs of praises I will ever give to Thee; LIFT EVERY VOICE AND SING (National Negro Hymn) Lift ev’ry voice and sing, till earth and heaven ring, Ring with the harmonies of liberty; Let our rejoicing rise, high as the listening skies, Let it resound loud as the rolling sea. Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us, Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us. Facing the rising sun of our new day begun, Let us march on till victory is won. Stony the road we trod, bitter the chast’ning rod, Felt in the days when hope unborn had died; Yet with a steady beat, have not our weary feet, Come to the place for which our fathers sighed? We have come over a way that with tears has been watered. We have come, treading our path thro’ the blood of the slaughtered, Out from the gloomy past, til now we stand at last Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast. God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, Thou who hast brought us thus far on the way; Thou who hast by Thy might, led us into the light, Keep us forever in the path, we pray. Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee, Lest our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee; Shadowed beneath Thy hand, may we forever stand, True to our God, true to our native land. By faith assured I will obey, For I shall never die.
