Show Efficacy of High-Fidelity Simulations in the Perioperative Setting BACKGROUND Simulation Based Learning Hannah Smith, BSN, RN, MSN Student Trish Gibbs, DNP, RN, CNE Robert Wilcox, MHA, RRT INTERVENTIONS • Step 1: Needs assessment and timeline creation This project aims to improve self-reported confidence among hospital-based perioperative staff by implementing high-fidelity simulations (HFSs) as an annual educational practice. • Existing education at a local pediatric operating room consists primarily of quarterly online modules and an annual skills validation, which may not provide sufficient exposure to high-acuity or emergent scenarios. 1,2 • Evidence supports integrating simulation-based learning (SBL) into healthcare education, demonstrating improvements in confidence, communication, and interdisciplinary teamwork.2,3 • The literature highlights three central themes influencing SBL effectiveness: 1) learning effectiveness, 2) instructional design, & 3) fidelity.1,2,3,4,5 METHODS The Iowa Model of Evidence-Based Practice was used to guide this project, as it promotes the identification of opportunities for clinical practice improvement and incorporates ongoing feedback loops to support ongoing evaluation. • Step 2: Create deliverables • Step 3: Obtain approval from stakeholders • Step 4: Identify support staff to undergo simulation facilitator training • Step 5: Pilot simulation implementation for perioperative staff. • Step 6: Obtain summative data using the SET-M tool • Step 7: Re-assess staff 12 months later with new simulation, re-assess with SET-M tool. • Step 8: Compare and analyze data from the SET-M evaluation tool • Step 9: Disseminate results IMPACTS Anticipated impacts of project include: • Increase in overall clinician confidence regarding emergent scenarios.5 • Enhanced staff experience and skill retention by providing a safe, judgement-free learning environment.4 • Augmented interdisciplinary communication and teamwork.4 • Improved patient safety outcomes in the perioperative setting.3,4,5 Deliverables for this project include: Figure 2: Busy Hospital Operating Room with Surgical Team • Project timeline • Pilot simulation scenario • A PowerPoint to present to stakeholders SET-M Evaluation Tool CONCLUSIONS • The Simulation Evaluation Tool – Modified (SET-M) • Facilitator key points infographic REFERENCES 1 Howard, T., Iyengar, K. The project's implementation has the potential to improve nursing practice, increase staff confidence, and enhance patient safety, making it a practical, sustainable, evidence-based training approach. |
