Abstract Purposes/Aims: This project aims to involve the family in patient care through a head-to-toe assessment to improve patient health outcomes and nursing teaching skills. Rationale/Background: Family inclusion is an important aspect of patient care, though oftentimes they are excluded from care. Excluding family from patient care can compromise care quality and leave both the patient and family in the dark about updates and changes. The lack of family inclusion can be detrimental to patient care.; Methods: A head-to-toe assessment was developed to provide nurses with an educational tool for families, intended to guide them through the specifics of the patient's diagnosis and potential complications. Lewin's Change Model framework is utilized to develop the project. The project involved researching interventions for including family in patient care. The intervention selected was a head-to-toe assessment tailored to each patient and family. Results: Three themes were identified regarding family involvement. 1) Significance of family exclusion from patient care, 2) the effects of family involvement regarding patient care, and 3) family inclusion teaching methods and teach-back approaches. A pre- and post-knowledge survey was provided to assess patients' understanding of nurse teaching, and nurses were instructed to use the teach-back method to ensure teaching was understood.; Conclusions: By involving families in patient care, patient health will improve by reducing missed care, readmissions, and lengths of stay. Nursing skills will also be developed, including greater compassion. Family involvement has additionally been known to reduce stress among patients.
