Elsie: LI am writing this letter separately because Hugh lord intends to make a trip to California soon and f thought I would send this letter down bymhim. The reason for this is that I want to say a few words about life insurance, and I wold like Hugh to explain to you in detail what the rest of us have done and are doing in this respect. Since we have considerable available funds, each of us at the present time, and it is so difficult to find really safe investments for our spare money, we have concluded that life insurance is perhaps as safe an investment as one can make. Louie and Flizabeth are teking out insurance on their lives and on the lives of their children. Marriner and his sisters have done like- wise. I think it would be a splendid thing for vou to take out insurance on your life, say for about $10,000.00, making your children or your estate the beneficiaries for the purpose of future paynent of It also it in on be inheritance tax. Since you have thing for each of cash on hand now and is not certain that the Company will be able to pay big dividends the future, I would suggest that, if you do take out insurance your life, you pay premiums for 6 years in advance. This would a safe place to put that money and is a saving on your insurance. would be a fine vour children to take out life insurance, making you the beneficiary how, but with the option of changing the beneficiary at a later time in case of marriage or what not. If they take it out now they get the benefit of a low rate on account of their youth. Also their premiums, which should be paid yearly instead of 6 years in advance, can be paid from the money which they have in the Savings Accounts which T have started for them. I think they should take out policies which will be paid up in 20 years, and for anywhere from $10,000.00 to $15,000.00 worth each. Hugh Ford can give you any details as to what all of us have done up here and furnish you any information you may want. incidentally, Hugh represents one of the three or four strongest companies in the country, and this fact has been taken into consideration by all of us in placing our insurance with Hugh. money than you can do lives while I do not know of any better usage you can make of your to take out insurance on your life, or any finer thing for your children than take out insurance on their they are young. With best love, October 22,1937. Mrs. Elsie B. Ballantyne, 4409 Talofa Ave., North Hollywood, Cal. Dearest Elsie: t am enclosing a Notification to Stockholders of the dividends which were paid by the Company on October 16th, Also this Notification informs Stockholders that no new accounts Shall be opened with the Company and that interest will not be paid on voxpany accounts after January 1,1938. This, of course, is the to discourage Stockholders Company. from keeping large accounts with You still have a nice balance with the Company which will be left there until the first of the year, or until such time as we can advise you to make certain investments with this money. Your usual monthly check will be sent to you each month for the remainder of this year and will be deducted from your balance either with the Company or at the Bank. Your dividends have been deposited at the Bank in a special account, and the dividends of your children have been deposited at the Bank in Savings Accounts. These accounts are of course in each one of their names, but at present it is arranged that I alone can draw from these accounts, so that there will be no temptation to draw from them although the money is always available in case of real necessity or for the purpose of making sound investments. In this respect I am writing you #® separate letter. I might add that at the present time your personal finances are in what might be called excellent shape. Dear Elsie: additional Thanks 7000.00 for all your little note, right. and hope you receive the A number of the children of Uncle Matt's family and our family are making some distribution of their Company stock to their children at this time. I wrote you sometime ago about making a distribution of some of the stock held in our fanily trusts, but there that decide are reasons why this such sifts, cannot be done now. Therefore I have given each one of my children a little of my stock for the double purpose of savings something on income taxes and saving on future inheritance taxes. Perhaps the worst thing about giving eway stock to one's children is the danger of spoiling them so that they will feel independent and be less inclined to hustle and work for a living than they otherwise would. Nevertheless, ail things considered, it seems like a chance that is worthwhile taking. We expect our children to set it some day anyway, and so I am going to take the responsibility of recommending to you that you give away say 40 or 50 shares of your Company stock to each of your children. At the same time, and providing not of you inform the your to daughters make children and until, perhaps at for the I would example, time of suggest that college graduation the time of you do marriage of your son. tn that way there would be less chance for them to be spoiled, although you know better than I whether your children are apt to be spoiled. Ido not intend to tell my children for a long time yet to come. f am sending you your stock certificate so that, if you decide to make the sifts, you should sign vour name on the back in ink at the place marked "X" with a pencil and have it witnessed by an adult on the line marked with a check (); then fill in and sign the enclosed request to the Company for transferring the stock with the full names of your children for the number of shares desired for each. at as If you decide to do this, please send everything back once as we are very anxious to make the transfers as quickly possible for all who want transfers made. For your information, most of Marriner'’s sisters are doing this and Elizabeth and myself. Carrie has already made some distribution of her stock for the same purpose. Nida has no children to distribute to and Louie has not vet decided to meke any distribution since Hugh is self-supporting and Eleanor's husband is well able to take care of her. of have keep course, time.
