Abstract This is an essay analyzing how Han Kang and Mariana Enriquez use allegory and lyricism to reveal violent systems and suggest ways to subvert them. Both authors use allegory, or extended metaphor, to make violent systems visible to the reader. These allegories often include gothic tropes to amplify oppressive structures and familiar symbols to represent them. Both authors also use lyricism to reveal and defamiliarize readers from violence that is concealed or seen as ordinary. Lyricism is then used to suggest new language to describe the world and new ways to exist within or outside of oppressive hierarchies. The allegories used in these texts include a vampiric cult to represent the world system and meat consumption to represent violent patriarchal exploitation. The approach to lyrical analysis is founded on the work of Viktor Shklovsky, Hélène Cixous, and Julia Kristeva. Reading these authors together allows for new connections and reveals how regimes are co-produced and co-maintained, and how they can be challenged through global solidarities and locally specific resistance.
