Weapons! in Final Tests _ [Chicago Tribune Press $ervice] Washington, July 9—The|: army, after 10 years of hemming and hawing, is drawing near a decision on its first fast | firing lightweight rifle. The| choice will be between the American made T-44 and Bel-| ’ gian designed T-48 to replace the 19 year old Garand rifle. On the verge of a decision _two years ago, with the Belgian rifle apparently the fa- vorite, the army called for| more tests in the field under| simulated war conditions and| | "a mass production tests to see] which rifle could be produced | . cheaper. The Belgian rifle has just been adopted by Canada and already has been made the standard rifle for Britain, Belgium, and France. Adopted by Canada Brig. Gen. Andrew P. O’Meara, chief of the army re-| research and development, recently told the house appropri-| ations committee that troop tests of the two proposed| rifles should be completed by | ~ July 15. The new rifles are similar in performance, but the Belgian rifle, developed by Fabrique ’ Nationale, is described as being simpler in construction and easier to strip down because it opens like a shotgun. The Belgian T-48 weighs 8.68 pounds compared with 8.2 pounds for the American T-44 and 9.1 pounds for the Garand. Killing Power Equal Both new rifles use 10_or,. 20 round magazines “compared. with the eight round clip of|. the Garand. The new rifles can be fired automatically at the rate of 650 shots a minute. Fired semi-automatically with a separate trigger pull) for each shot, they can fire at the rate of 45 rounds a minute compared with 34 for the Garand. The new rifles used the new .30 caliber short lightweight ammunition which has been adopted as standard by the North Atlantic Treaty organization. The cartridge is 2.8 inches long, or about a half inch shorter than standard ammunition now used in the Garand. It has the same range and killing power of the Garand’s bullets — maximum range 3,400 yards and muzzle velocity of 2,800 feet ‘an | second.
