With all of the different social media sites available, a personal brand can be developed while learning to use a new site. This project is important to me because I want to network and discover what my brand truly is. I have been on Facebook for years, but I want to learn about other social media sites. It gives me an opportunity to discover my potential. I feel strongly that it is time to move on from my current position and venture into something new. I have been with Schiff Nutrition for seven years and experienced different positions. I started out as a Document Specialist for project management and moved to Associate Project Manager and moved again to Item Master Specialist. In 2013, Schiff Nutrition was bought out by Reckitt Benckiser and I have been a data specialist for two years. Professional and personal branding is important because it allows me to gain more self-confidence, switch to a job that I know I will like and enjoy, improve my current skills and strengths, and learn new skills. This project will help me gain self-confidence by getting to know myself. I will learn what my strengths are and how I can improve my weaknesses. It will improve the way I view myself and help gain the self-confidence in my abilities. This project will help me switch to a job that I will like and enjoy. With my background in project management, I would like to get a job where I can manage projects and be creative. I really enjoy project management, but am looking at other options that have fascinated me while going through this program. Professionally branding myself will help potential employers see my accomplishments, goals, and potential that otherwise would not show through a resume. Audience Analysis The target audience I am aiming to reach is potential employers in the fields of project management and Social Media. I would like to make myself more marketable for positions in these fields especially in the areas of manufacturing and human resources for project management. Whether it is Reckitt Benckiser or a different company, I would like potential employers to notice my skill set and knowledge in these fields. I would like to branch out and network with people who could help me with my career. Networking is a useful tool to find people who have great knowledge in the fields of social media and project management. Networking is done online through Twitter, LinkedIn, or other social media sites or in person through Project Management Institute (PMI), networking meetups, or just meeting people in public. Work Performed Throughout the year, I completed a variety of projects that helped me brand myself as a professional. I interviewed representatives from different companies, updated LinkedIn, created PROFESSIONAL AND PERSONAL BRANDING 3 and updated Twitter, created content to post in Twitter, Slideshare, and LinkedIn, and created a website. LinkedIn In LinkedIn, I updated my profile to ensure that all the information is accurate and correct. I added a summary, work descriptions, education, and included a profile picture. The summary describes who I am and what I am interested in. Work descriptions were updated to include the general tasks, responsibilities, and functions of each position. Education was updated to include the classes that I have taken. My connections increased to more than 589 and it is growing daily. I made more than 500 new connections while working on this project. I added connections by inviting new people to connect with me and making connections with people in high ranking positions such as CEOs and owners. Many of these connections post insight on leadership, communication, and other professional topics. I increased the number of influencers, companies, and groups that I followed. Currently, I am following 100 companies, 74 influencers, and 50 groups. I posted approximately 70 times and would take my information from the posts I created in Twitter and evaluated which ones would be the best for LinkedIn. Out of these posts, I received approximately 238 views, 18 likes, and 1 comment. Twitter In Twitter, I updated my profile to ensure that all the information is accurate and correct. I changed my profile name so it no longer said “Jane Doe.” I upload a professional picture and added a biography. I tweeted 320 times. I used Klout to post my tweets on a daily basis and would go in every Sunday to read articles and schedule them to post throughout the week. The topics that I used for each of the posts were project management, leadership, self-improvement, management, risk management, data management, communications, supply chain management, time management, and personal branding. I would schedule tweets three times a day through Klout for each topic. Out of these 320 tweets, people favorited my posts 30 times and I had 5 retweets. Slideshare In Slideshare, I created a profile and uploaded six presentations. The information of four of these presentations came from Project Management Professional (PMP) study guide. The other two presentations came from subjects that people found important topics. • Project Management Overview (http://www.slideshare.net/Jod30/project-management-overview-45919618). The project management overview presentation explains what project management is, what a project is, and who manages projects. The information came from Project Management Book of Knowledge (PMBOK). This presentation received 17 views. PROFESSIONAL AND PERSONAL BRANDING 4 • Project Management Process (http://www.slideshare.net/Jod30/project-management-process-46560979). The advice in this slide came from tips I have learned throughout the years. This presentation received 106 views. • Social Media and Personal Branding (http://www.slideshare.net/Jod30/social-media-and-personal-branding-46645147). This presentation explains what I have learned from my interviews and put them into a slide. The last slides include advice provided by the professionals that I interviewed. This presentation received 19 views. Interviews I interviewed four different companies to see what they look for on social media and personal branding. The companies I interviewed are PRI, LLC, Franklin Covey, AT&T, and Reckitt Benckiser. PRI, LLC is a consulting company in Utah that helps people find jobs. I met the CEO of PRI, LLC at PMI professional development days and he had some really good information on resumes and interviewing. This interview was done face-to face. Franklin Covey is a global company that specializes in organizational improvement in leadership, education, productivity, customer loyalty, and customer service. This interview was done over the phone. AT&T is a technology company that has advances in mobile services, TVs, Internet, and business solutions. This interview was done over the phone. Reckitt Benckiser is a global company that improve health, home, and hygiene worldwide. This is done through many different types of product such as vitamins, OTCs, cleaning supplies, and laundry soaps. The interview with Reckitt Benckiser was done face-to-face. Social media and personal branding is part of the hiring process in most companies. I was shocked when interviewing with AT&T that they do not review social media to hire someone. The other companies that I interviewed use social media and personal branding to compare potential candidates and look at their behaviour on social media. It is a huge part of the PROFESSIONAL AND PERSONAL BRANDING 5 hiring process now and I wanted to know what the impact of social media and personal branding is, limitations or restrictions, advantages, how social media can hurt a potential candidate’s chance of getting hired, how social media boosts self-confidence, and advice for anyone who wants to use social media to brand themselves. Social media and personal branding provide potential employers with different kinds of information. It helps broaden the candidate pool and allows potential employers to hire in geographical areas. Social media and personal branding identifies if the candidate is credible or not. It shows who the person is and how credible their information really is. Social media and personal branding helps potential employers know who you are and what you are about. It shows them how you interact in a social setting. Social media has an impact on the younger generation and this generation is less shy at posting information onto social media. This information is out on the internet for all people to see and can have an impact on you for decades to come. Social media and personal branding have restrictions and limitations when it comes to candidates and potential employers. Social media allows you to post anything and everything. Some people like to use this as a play-by-play. Play-by-plays are a downfall and can hurt your chance of getting hired. A restriction or limitation for social media is that you can see the person. The representative from Franklin Covey suggested that we need to make sure that we do not discriminate based on the picture. This concept maybe evolving with the times, but it is important to remember not to bias or discriminate based on the picture. Social media and personal branding allows people to see your skills, accomplishments, and education. It gives employers a better overview of the candidate than what a resume will show. Social media and personal branding allows employers to get to know a person on a professional and personal level. It gives companies a better perspective of the candidate they will potentially hire. Social media allows you to put your credentials out for potential employers to see and helps candidates get their name out there. The information is always available and is flexible to update. Social media is an excellent way of getting information to a lot of potential employers at the same time. It allows professionals to keep in contact with others that are not in the same geographic location. Social media defines your character and reflects who you are based on the posts you make. Social media can have an effect on an employee’s chance of getting hired if they post information that is unprofessional. People who post the worst information possible will be passed up for a position. Hiring managers will look at a potential candidate’s behavior. If they portray themselves as childish or infantile, hiring managers will pass them up and not consider them at all. This behavior makes the hiring manager question your character and believe you to be unprofessional. PROFESSIONAL AND PERSONAL BRANDING 6 Personal branding and social media builds morale and self-confidence. This is done through the information that is posted through the sites. Make sure the information that is posted is positive. Positive information shows your strengths. Social media gives a person more exposure and boosts their career. It will allow potential employers to see positive information about who we are and what we are about. It shows our accomplishments, skills, and experiences. Self-confidence can continue to build through personal branding and social media. It allows you to build your brand for what you want to be known for. Just be truthful and honest about what you can do. The interviewee from PRI stated that we should post the positive information and not the negative. If you post the positive then you get the positive back. Negative will just hold you back and not boost your self-confidence. To boost self-confidence, define yourself before posting and make sure you know what you are all about. This will help by figuring out what information is important to you. It will help figure out what information to post and what is your own personality. A person’s whole perception of who you are is based on the information that you post. It will help you be aware and conscious of what you are doing on social media. The representative from PRI, LLC advises to watch what we post on social media. He stated that what we post will be with us our entire lives. We need to remember that if hiring managers want to find out information on the Internet they will locate it. Once it is on the Internet, the information can be found. It is not truly hidden. The representative from Franklin Covey advises that we need to make our brand clear and professional. It needs to be career focused and not include a lot of personal information. We need to remember to keep what we want in mind when developing our brands. It will give our brand a real sense of direction. The interviewee from AT&T advises that we choose our photos wisely. We need to choose photos that are going to be a true reflection of what we want people to believe about us. Social media is only about ten percent of who we truly are, but it is 100 percent of how we reflect to people. People only see what we post and how we look in our photos. It may not be who we really are, but they do not know that. We need to choose information that reflects who we are and what we want people to see. Reckitt Benckiser advises that we keep our brands professional and accurate. It will reflect our character to hiring managers and we need to know the audience we are reaching through our brand. We need to keep the information honest and updated. We do not need to deceive people through our brands. Website I created a personal website (http://jodyflower1984.wix.com/jodyrflower). I used WIX.com to design my website. WIX.com was the best website designing tool for my use and it included the template that I used. I included my resume, projects, awards and certification, and PROFESSIONAL AND PERSONAL BRANDING 7 contact information. This personal website was very simple and useful for the information that suits my needs. It also includes my professional picture and logo. Literature Review Self-confidence is built by doing things that make you uncomfortable and push your boundaries. As a professional, self-confidence is enhanced through personal branding. In personal branding, a professional will learn new skills, discover skills they are already good at, offer a solution to other people’s problems, and explore their boundaries that will make them a better professional. Self-confidence and personal branding are similar when it comes to discovering and promoting who you are. What is personal branding? Personal branding is the act of presenting skills and assistance to others. It is the act of standing out from the crowd so that people remember you for a long period of time even when you are no longer in the same area as that person (Kayser, 2014; Kukral, 2011; Strong, 2012). It is all about making a trustworthy and consistent impression (Joshi, 2014). Personal branding is about offering others assistance to solve their problems through a unique set of skills and talents. It allows the target audience to know the individual personally and professionally, and allows the audience to know why they need that individual (Kayser, 2014). The individual has control to determine who they are and how they want to be portrayed to others (Baker, 2014). Personal branding is all about making an individual’s skills and talents known to the world. Personal branding is about self-discovery and discovering what skills you are good at. It is about defining an identity before sharing it with others. This means that it is important to professionally and personally know thyself (Lewis, 2013). People are attracted to others who know themselves and present themselves with determination and clarity (Kayser, 2014). Self-discovery provides confidence in your skills and talents. It allows people to know what those talents and skills are. It is importantly to focus on these talents and passions to help develop the skills that need to be enhanced (Clive, 2012). Self-discovery is the key to success when it comes to personal branding (Clive, 2012). It provides important information about the individual that they may or may not have known about themselves. Self-discovery allows a person to get to know what they are capable of doing and how they can improve these skills to excel professionally. Personal branding is about online and offline promoting and marketing of your brand. It is important to acknowledge your brand and understand that no one else can market your brand better than you (Bachelder, 2013). An individual knows themselves better than anyone else will ever know them. They know their skills and talents to be able to market themselves as a brand. Personal branding gives power to the individual that otherwise would not have the opportunity (Kayser, 2014). This power promotes the strength of the brand and influences others (Lewis, 2013). Self-promotion and marketing is about displaying attractive qualities and qualities that are important to others (Lewis, 2013). It is good to have the brand seen and heard often. This way the brand is visible to the individual’s target audience (Clive, 2012). A good way to do this is to present the brand in front of as many people as possible (Bachelder, 2014). This presentation can be done through networking or social media connections. PROFESSIONAL AND PERSONAL BRANDING 8 The influence of personal branding is that potential employers are impressed by the unique skills and talents that the individual possesses. It allows companies to review potential employees to make sure they are being truthful and honest about what they are capable of. More and more companies are using personal branding to hire new employees because it is such a competitive hiring environment. Personal branding can be offline through networking and business cards but it can be online through social media and websites. With technology expanding quickly, personal branding has diverted to using the online approach versus offline. This online approach has become more relevant through social media cites. Social media is growing quality connections and is becoming the norm for many organizations and individuals due to how fast and powerful it has grown (Kayser, 2014; Strong, 2012). There are many social media sites available but LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter and Slideshare will be the ones mainly focused on. LinkedIn is one of the largest and fastest growing social media sites for professionals. According to Mark Lewis (2013), a LinkedIn profile is researched by more employers and companies than most individuals are aware of. LinkedIn helps connect professionals with companies and other professionals. As professional, it is important to complete a LinkedIn all the way and promote the individual’s profile through other social media sites. It is important to complete the LinkedIn profile and it needs to be flawless with no grammar or spelling errors (Schawbel, 2009). It is important to complete the profile with the correct information. Potential employers are looking at the profile and determining if the individual will make a good fit for their company. Spelling and grammar errors look bad on the individual and could pass them up for a good opportunity. LinkedIn profile should have a professional picture. Employers and companies will see this photo and could make judgements based on the photo. A professional photo will promote the LinkedIn profile to others. According to Bernard Clive (2013), the LinkedIn summary should promote expertise, accomplishments, and how others can benefit. The summary needs to be a small statement of what the individual has done and how they can help. Some other important tips on LinkedIn are join groups, customize URL, list all experiences, use keywords, and develop networks. Groups will help promote and enhance skills and expertise for the individual. It is important to join groups that can help promote these skills. Custom URL makes it easier in the search for people to find the LinkedIn profile. This is the same with using keywords. It will enhance the Search Engine Optimization. LinkedIn profiles need to contain a few keywords in the headline and summary that will make it easier for potential employers to search the individual’s profile. LinkedIn profiles need to have complete employment experiences. It will make potential employers easier to search and locate skills that they are looking for. LinkedIn is unique because it divides the contacts into first, second, and third degree which helps with career opportunities (Schawbel, 2009). The more first degree contacts that an individual has will help gain more second and third degree contacts. This will help grow the individual’s network and give them more career opportunity. PROFESSIONAL AND PERSONAL BRANDING 9 Twitter is a different type of social media site that is used for personal branding. It keeps you connected to followers and others who are aware of an individual’s personal brand (Lewis, 2013). Twitter followers are connected to the individual’s core values and what they have to offer. When completing a Twitter profile, an individual must know what their mission and vision is for this site. This mission and vision could be different than other social media sites. Tips for growing a personal brand through Twitter are to complete biography, follow people, listen and engage in conversations, tweet and retweet, and use lists. Similar to the summary in LinkedIn, the Twitter biography needs to be complete and tell others information about the individual. It is important to complete this biography and use a professional profile that will promote the brand. Twitter allows an individual to follow as many people as possible that will help an individual promote their brand. It is important to follow people that will help the individual learn and grow as a professional. When an individual follows these type of people, they can engage in conversations and listen to what these individuals have to offer. Each contact will help grow the personal brand and profile. Tweet and retweet to grow the brand. Tweets should be well-crafted and short that allows the individual to share their mission and vision (Radice, 2013). Retweets will help an individual engage in other people’s conversations and get the individual noticed by other people (Clive, 2013). A good feature in Twitter are lists. Lists allows an individual to sort contacts and trending events that are relevant to the individual. Facebook is a social media site that is geared toward personal use than professional. However, companies and potential employers will review Facebook profiles to determine if an applicant is right for the position. Facebook will allow the individual’s personal brand to go viral (Lewis, 2013). It is important to be careful with posting to Facebook when using it for a personal brand. Tips for growing a personal brand through Facebook are to set privacy settings, complete profile, grow network, update status, and start a group or page (Schawbel, 2009). Privacy settings will help people view or not view information that would jeopardize a career opportunity. A good privacy setting to turn off is the tagging settings. This will allow an individual to not be tagged in any embarrassing photos or posts by their contacts. Similar to LinkedIn and Twitter, a profile needs to be completely filled out and accurate. It will allow people to network with the individual and not question any information on the profile. An individual needs to update their status often and professionally. Do not post anything that would be demeaning to the individual or any of their contacts. Slideshare is a social media site that allows an individual to present their skills. It allows individuals to put presentations together and share them with professionals. Slideshare allows people to post their presentations to LinkedIn and other channels. An individual must know the strategy on how they want to put a presentation together. Tips for growing a personal brand in Slideshare are to be an expert on the presentation topic, title slide is the headline, promote presentation, and turn on forms option (Miller, 2013). The topic must be something that the individual knows and knows well. It is important to know and make sense in the presentation. Don’t assume that the audience will know what everything means. Be clear and concise in the presentation. The title slide is going to be the headline in PROFESSIONAL AND PERSONAL BRANDING 10 Slideshare. This means it needs to be well-designed and searchable. The title slide is going to be what people search when locating the presentation. The individual needs to promote the presentation through online and offline means. They will need to drive viewers to the presentation (Miller 2013). The forms option allows the individual to generate a form at the end of the presentation. This will help with the analytics when looking at the presentation. A great way to promote a personal brand it to create a website. The website can be used when researching projects and information about an individual. A website opens doors for new opportunities and alliances (Kayser, 2014). Personal websites will provide great career opportunity for an individual. A website needs to target a specific audience and designed to the audience. It needs to be easy to use and with the technology growing will need to consider a mobile size. People will use mobile phones to search websites versus computers. The website will need to improve the personal brand of the individual and provide audience with information that it needs. With a website, it is important to use search engine optimization (SEO). To create a useful SEO, it is important to use keywords, make sure the profile has its own page, and use name in URL (Crestodine, Unknown). Keywords allow people to search the individual’s profile through search engine optimization. Put keywords throughout the website that will allow people to search for the individual. A website must have its own name and page. The page needs to be all about the individual. The website must include the individual’s name in the URL. This will make the search engine optimization more efficient. So what does personal branding have to do with self-confidence? Personal branding takes an individual out of their comfort zone and allows them to create a professional profile. LinkedIn will take an individual’s skills and talents to promote them to the world. An individual may be uncomfortable to show what they are capable of and needs to show how they could help others. Twitter allows an individual to create a different writing style using hashtags and shorter sentences. It is difficult to get used to how twitter works and how to create an effective profile. Facebook allows people to invade an individual’s personal life and space. It can cause someone to be self-conscious when it comes to profile pictures and status updates. This is the same with a website. Everyone is different when it comes to what makes them uncomfortable. The problem with low self-confidence is that an individual will never move up in the workplace, let others take credit for their work, minimize their accomplishments, or are self-deprecating (Williams, 2014). Self-confidence will not allow a person to reach their full potential. It is different when it comes to personal branding. Personal branding allows a person to gain greater confidence in themselves and their abilities. This will allow them to complete everything that they want to complete (Lewis, 2013). Personal branding helps others build up their strengths. Conclusion Social media is great way to build a professional and personal brand. The information allows potential employers to search for the perfect candidate based on the information that they post in these sights. People search profiles and make judgements based on the information that is PROFESSIONAL AND PERSONAL BRANDING 11 posted. This information can haunt a person for their entire career and they will need to answer for that information when applying for a job. Self-confidence shines through when you put yourself into situations that you normally would not. I learned that talking to people and messaging people to help you with your project is not that scary and people are willing to help if you let them know what you are doing. LinkedIn is a great place to connect with people and ask people to assist you for information that you need. Many people have messaged me to help them out professionally. If I would do this project again, I would interview more people because that would allow me to gain more knowledge about social media and potential employers. The advice that was provided by the interviews gave me great insight on things that I was doing for this project. There are many things that I would have improved on after the interviews. LinkedIn is a great tool to build a professional network and learn new things from posts that people have liked, shared or posted. I wish that I would have posted more articles that reflect what people are looking for. It is difficult to judge what people like and I tried to post a diverse range of subjects. It is important to grow your connections in LinkedIn and try to connect with many people. These people provide great insight to what you are looking for. I learned a lot of new things from these people and enjoyed reading and commenting on what I read. I would suggest to comment on articles that other people post to grow connections. People will see what you comment so make sure it sounds professional. Twitter was difficult for me in the beginning of this project. I learned that Twitter is not that intimidating and it is a good way to learn what people post and get new information about social media and leadership. I would have used Klout earlier to post articles to Twitter. Make connections that will inspire you to post information that is professional and important to them. It will help with people retweeting the posts that you make. Slideshare allows you to post information and have people see what you are capable of doing. I would suggest to post more information in Slideshare and connect it to LinkedIn so that they will post in LinkedIn. Slideshare is a good way to share your knowledge with your connections in LinkedIn. People will look at them and see how knowledgeable you are based on the posts that you make. In conclusion, social media is a great way to brand yourself professionally and personally. It helps people see your full potential and builds your self-confidence. Personal branding and self-confidence go hand in hand. Self-confidence will open many doors when it is done through social media and help you know who you are. It helps you promote your skills and develop new ones. PROFESSIONAL AND PERSONAL BRANDING 12 Reference Bachelder, D. (2014).
