Description |
Secondary language arts teachers are responsible for finding ways to motivate students to become lifelong readers. The ability to read and comprehend a variety of texts is foundational to learning both inside and outside of the classroom. There are many cognitive benefits to regular, recreational reading (Anderson, Wilson, & Fielding, 1988; Clark, 2013; Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development [OECD], 2010; Samuels & Wu, 2001; Sullivan & Brown, 2013). Research suggests that reading is linked to long-term benefits in brain connectivity (Lopes, Ferrioli, Nakano, Litvoc, & Bottino, 201 l; Vemuri & Mormino, 2013; Verghese et al., 2003; Wilson et al., 2002). Recreational reading has also been shown to be a benefit to society as regular readers are more likely to participate culturally and civically in their communities (National Endowment for the Arts [NEA], 2007). Additionally, readers tend to have improved social skills because they are able to be more empathetic toward other human beings (Oatley, 2011). |
