Shaw, 53, has been minister in charge.of Finley. Temple Church of God in Christ at 119 W. 30th since June 1981. He had conducted a revival at the church earlier that year, then returned to his home in Los Angeles. He said he told his family at the time, “God desires that we move to Utah to labor for him.” Bishop Nathaniel Jones of the Utah Jurisdiction called Shaw to be pastor of the Salt Lake City congregation, succeeding Elder R.E. Hurrington who had served there 31 years. Mount Zion is.the oldest of five churches of the Church of God been in Christ in Utah, having established in 1939 as an outgrowth of the missionary ef- fort of the late Alberta Jennings. Her husband, Elder J.R. Jennings, was Mount Zion’s third pastor. Hurrington was called in 1953 by the late Bishop Finley. Shaw is the son of the late Rev. and Mrs. William C. Shaw of Altus, Okla. The Shaw family moved to Bakersfield, Calif. in 1944 where young Shaw graduated from high school. He served in the Air Force and then entered college where he earned a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts in 1978. Shaw claims he had a “born again experience and was given the power to witness by being filled with the Holy Ghost on Dec. 17; 1952.” He received his call to preach in 1956 in Texas and was ordained an elder during a convocation of the Church of God in Christ in Hawaii in 1960. Hawthorne Nathaniel celebrated Lawrence his 43rd year as a minister. It was Hawthorne’s farewell sermon. He is moving to Pensacola, Fla., for work in a defense industry. Young Hawthorne became Liggins’ assistant two years ago. ‘I found out that not only here, but at all churches, no matter what the pastor does, no matter how sincere he may be, or how hard the times, there is always someone who is ready to find fault and criticize,’’ Hawthorne said. Then he read a litany, composed by an unknown source: ‘If the pastor is young, they say he lacks experience; if his hair is gray, he is too old. If he preaches from notes, he’s ‘‘too dry;’’ if he preaches the truth, he is meddling. If he fails to please everybody, he is hurting the church; if he makes them all happy, he has no convictions. If he drives an old car, he shames his congregation; if he buys a new car, he is setting his affection on earthly things. If he preaches all the time, the congregation gets tired of hearing him; if he invites guest ministers, he is shedding his responsibility as pastor. If he receives a large salary, he is a money lover; if he gets a small amount, well, they say, it proves he is not worth much anyway. Hawthorne referred to John 1:6- 8: “There was a man sent from God whose name was John. The same came ... to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe ... ’’ Hawthorne reminded the congregation that ‘‘there was a man sent from God whose name is the Rev. N.L. Liggins, who is not the Light, but was sent to bear witness to the Light.’’ Liggins, as do other pastors, Hawthorne said, has a “unique occupation — proclaiming the gospel.’’ Liggins must not let anything keep him from preaching The Word, Hawthorne said. 7 4 % « * ef OP ade ~ > cK, Pring %, + eal ¢ TID ay sae \ , ey He open age Pe: eee ee ee Brothers from th? and DA STOR Sisters, It is good to be in May you have a good Good the day Morning: House of God yet another and a pleasant week. Pursuant to our available records, it is reflected that in 1918 the Utah Baptist State Convention had purchased a lot on 27" and Wall Avenue in Ogden. Upon eight (8) years the Church later became incorporated on February 10, 1926. The Reverend L.A. Platt of Ontario, CA became of the first pastor of the Wall Avenue Baptist Church on October 2, 1930. He pastured for six years. On April 8, 1952, the Reverend B.J. Washington was called as the Pastor. During his leadership, the congregation grew to where a new church building was needed. From this effort, the Wall Avenue Baptist Church became the New Zion Baptist Church. This name was submitted by Sis. Jimmie Lee Bell. Reverend Washington pastured here for 10 years. During this process, several special events had taken place, the Ground Breaking Services was on May 16, 1954, the Laying of the Foundation in November 1954, Laying of the Cornerstone on October 21, 1954, the First Church Service was on March 25, 1956 and with the Dedication Service on October 26, 1958. For each year thereafter, we celebrate our “first” church service on Palm Sunday which is in the form of the Church Anniversary Service. Additionally, we also celebrate, the fourth Sunday in October, the “dedication” of our church in the form of Loyalty Day Service. Through the many years of our member’s faithfulness, prayers and perseverance, God has blessed us. In December 1997, the Reverend James Abrams of Sacramento, CA was called to Pastor the New Zion Baptist Church. During his leadership, the congregation continued to grow. Pastor Abrams had pastured here until his retirement in May 2004. At which time, we have experienced God's faithfulness during our time of diligently and prayerfully selecting a new Pastor. On February 17, 2005, Reverend Derrel A. Hughes of Wake Forest, NC was called and accepted the tremendous responsibility of becoming the “under shepherd” of our Church. We believe that he is a man who has a love for God, His people, and His purpose. Presently, we are blessed with six (6) Ministers; five (5) licensed, four (4) ordained with one (1) to be ordained, and one (1) who has accepted the call. Additionally, we have over seven (7) flourishing Ministries that are meeting the needs of Gods people. The congregation has grown to over 230 members with approximately 160 active members to date. Praise ye the Lord! For over 87 years, the New Zion Baptist Church has and will continue to be the beacon of light in our Community and surrounding area. With Gods grace and mercy, we will hold fast to our motto, “The Church Built By Faith”. May God bless you and may Heaven always smile upon you! wemen Bry Ss. ben) HMWHE)Smoaucopn. VEL FILE COPY NZBC 50" (Golden) Anniversary N2—L PAUL Church History April 9, 2006 Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! It is truly an honor and a pleasure for me to have this opportunity to share with you the History of the New Zion Baptist Church during this wonderful celebration of our “Golden Anniversary” at this current location. In order to bring you up to the current event, please allow me a few minutes to give you a brief synopsis of our journey. Current records indicate that in 1918, (which was some 88 years ago) a lot was purchased by the Utah Baptist State Convention on 27" Street and Wall Avenue here in Ogden. Some time later, the church was built by the congregation and was named the “Wall Avenue Baptist Church”. Approximately eight (8) years later, the Church later became incorporated on February 10, 1926. As years passed, the Church was later closed until 1929. Upon arrival of Sister Georgia Holt from Los Angeles, CA. and with the grace of God, she re-opened the doors of the Church and began Sunday School services. In August 1930, Brother and Sister Neal came to Ogden and became affiliated with the Church. At which time they had suggested that the Wall Avenue Baptist Church extend a call to its first pastor, the Reverend L. A. Platt, of Ontario, CA. Pursuant to our records, Reverend Platt preached his sermon on October 5, 1930. He was blessed to render faithful service until he was called to pastor at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Pocatello, ID, in 1936. Upon Reverend Platts’ departure, there were succeeding pastors from 1936 to the early 1960’s including Rev. J. L. Jones, Reverend Paxton, Rev. Jessie Conner, Reverend J. R. Rollerson and Reverend B. J. Washington who began his tenure on April 8, 1952. Under Reverend Washington's pastorate, the Church had many accomplishments. The first being in July 1952 a parsonage was purchased and in a few months another parsonage was bought along with two (2) lots. Secondly, as the congregation began to grow, a dream of the Wall Avenue Baptist Church materialized and with Gods’ answering of prayers and guidance, a new site was acquired. We are presently occupying that building. During the process of getting the structure built, several special events took place, beginning with the Ground Breaking Services held on Sunday, May 16, 1954; Laying of the Foundation in November 1954; Laying of the Cornerstone on October 21, 1954; the first Church service on March 25, 1956; and the Dedication taking place on October 26, 1958. After reviewing several names for the new Church, it was voted and approved to except the name of New Zion, which was submitted by Sister Jimmie Lee Bell. Thus, the Wall Avenue Baptist Church had a new building and anew name. Reverend Washington pastured New Zion until 1961. NZ Church History “Golden Anniversary” April 9, 2006 Page 2 Following each year thereafter, we celebrate our “first” church service on Palm Sunday which is in the form of the Church Anniversary Service. Additionally, we celebrate, the fourth Sunday in October, and the “dedication” of our church in the form of Loyalty Day Service. God has blessed us through these many years with members who have exhibited faithfulness, prayers and perseverance. New Zion has had various pastors from 1961 to early 2005. We have witnessed the goodness of God with many things being accomplished; in 1979, John 13:34 “Love ye one another” was adopted as an aphorism; later that year, during the first Sunday night in November, New Zion witnessed its biggest baptism ever, when fathers, mothers, sons and daughters were among the 25 persons baptized; and the renovation of our current building was completed. Through the years, additional properties have been acquired and as the Lord allows, we continue to update our building. In the event, that you would like to review all of our past to present Pastors, we invite you to peruse our pictorial history in our Church Office Conference Room, compliments of our loyal and long standing member, Dr. Donald Carpenter. As we remain steadfast and keep our hand in Gods hand, we continue to see His sovereignty. On February 17, 2005, Reverend Derrel A. Hughes of Wake Forest, NC accepted the call and tremendous responsibility as the Under Shepherd of New Zion. He delivered his first sermon on May I, 2005. Through God’s anointing, he continues to preach and teach the good news, which is the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Under his leadership, many souls have been added to the church and the church continues to prosper, spiritually and financially and striving to serve our Heavenly Father’s people. We have currently been blessed with 7 Ministers of which 4 are ordained and three are licensed. To date, there are approximately 245 members and 160 are active members. Although, New Zion has experienced and will continue to have many trials and triumphs, we will go on with Jesus’ command “go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded” (Matthew 28:19 & 20). And if it’s Gods will and by the power of the Holy Spirit, we will maintain and hold fast to our motto, “The Church Built By Faith”. May you always be blessed to drink from our Lords cup and may His grace be with your spirit! This building was purchased by the Utah Baptist State Convention and seated 100 people and was located at 2701 Wall Avenue. At a meeting on December 23, 1925, it was decided to incorporate the organization for a period of 100 years. Bro. James E. Moore was chairman of this meeting and the following officers were elected: Bro. O. H. Parry, President; Sis. Nellie Hamilton, Secretary; Sis. Florida Robinson, Vice-President; and Sis. Bernice Johnson, Treasurer. The Articles of Incorporation was officially signed on January 5, 1926. The Wall Avenue Baptist Church was the beacon of light in the community from 1918 to 1928. She began a Sunday School with one quarter and the Bible. In August 1930, Bro. and Sis. Neal came to Ogden and became affiliated with the church. Upon a suggestion from the Neal's, Wall Avenue Baptist Church extended a call to its first pastor, Rev. L. A. Platt. According to church archives, Rev. Platt preached his first sermon on October 5, 1930. He rendered faithful service until called to pastor at the Bethel Baptist Church in Pocatello, ID in 1936. Succeeding pastors were Rev. J. L. Jones, 1936-37; Rev. William Paxton, 1938-42: Rev. Jessie L. Conner; 1942-48; Rev. J. L. Rollerson, 1948-51 and Rev. Benjamin J. Washington, who accepted the call and delivered his first sermon on April 3, 1952. Under the leadership of Rev. Benjamin J. Washington, the church had many noteworthy accomplished, purchasing its first parsonage in July 1952 and bought two property lots. As the membership outgrew the Wall Avenue Baptist Church, the second prayer was answered and the congregation was blessed to acquire a new edifice located at 2935 Lincoln Avenue in Ogden, which it currently remains. The ground breaking services were held on Sunday, May 16, 1954. The foundation was laid in November 1954 and the cornerstone was placed on October 31, 1955. This structure was dedicated on October 26, 1958. There were several proposed names for the new construction. The church approved the proposal submitted by the late Sis. Jimmie L. Bell for the church to named “The New Zion Missionary Baptist Church”. Thus the Wall Avenue Baptist Church had a new name and became “The Church Built By Faith’. Rev. Washington pastured New Zion until 1961. Many pastors stood in John’s shoes from Rev. Samuel C. Miller, 1962-64: Rev. Lacy K. Curry, 1965-68 and under his leadership two area properties were purchased at 2957 and 2959 Lincoln Avenue: Rev. O. E. Piper, 1969-70; Rev. R. L. Watkins, 1970; Rev. Joseph S. Speech, 1971; Rev. Willie Davis, September 14, 1972 to July 1978 and departed to accept the pastorate in Las Vegas, NV. During Rev. Davis tenure, the parsonage mortgage for 709-33" Street in Ogden, was paid in full. In February 1979, Rev. N. Lawrence Liggins of Texarkana, TX, accepted the call to pastor and preached his first sermon in May 1979. During the pastorate of Rev. Liggins, our aphorism “Love Ye One Another” [John 13:34] was adopted and in November 1979, New Zion witnessed it largest baptism to date where 25 souls were saved. Rev. Liggins departed to pastor in California in 1983. Rev. Tyrone L. Seals served as the New Zion Pastor and presented his first sermon on August 6, 1984. With the departure of Rev. Seals in 1985, Rev. George Merritt served as the Pastor from 1986 to 1988. Upon the departure of Rev. Merritt, the interim pastor was Rev. Gates from 1989 to 1990. The Rev. Isaac P. Brantley was extended and accepted the call to pastor New Zion from 1990 to 1996. Rev. Cal Carter served as the interim pastor from 1996-97 and New Zion called Rev. James Abrams of Sacramento, CA in 1997. Under Rev. Abrams’ tenure, a historical event took place when he ordained Rev. Michelle Dockery Boyer as the first female ever to be licensed as a Reverend at New Zion on May 15, 2004. Rev. Abrams was the Under Shepherd until his resignation on May 31, 2004 and he returned to Sacramento, CA. With the acceptance of the call, Rev. Derrel A. Hughes of Charlotte, NC, delivered his first Proclamation of the Word on Sunday, May 1, 2005. Rev. Hughes served as the Pastor until returning to North Carolina on July 31, 2006. At which time, New Zion extended the call as pastor to Rev. Dr. Bruce Davis, Sr., of Hattiesburg, MS. As with the pastors before Dr. Davis, New Zion continued to grow in membership, Biblical teachings, sound doctrine, many building upgrades and additional property has been purchased in the surrounding area. Dr. Davis was the pastor of New Zion until he accepted the call as pastor in December 2011 in Newburgh, NY at which time he delivered his last sermon on Sunday, December 16". NZBC History Beginning 1916 to March 20, 2016 Page 2 While seeking guidance from the Lord by prayer, supplication and keeping our hand in Gods hand on calling its next pastor, New Zion praises God for its Associate Ministers who fed His people from 1996 to 1997, June 2004 to April 2005, August 2006 to November 2007 and December 22, 2011 to November 18, 2012. They were; Rev. Cal Carter, Rev. Robert and Rev. Betty Hall, Rev. Michelle Dockery Boyer, Min. Lillie Blakeley Holman, Min. Stanley L. Ellington and Min. Michael D. Smauldon. New Zion continues to witness Gods sovereignty and on September 27, 2012, New Zion extended the call to pastor to Rev. Carey E. McCall, Ill, M.Div., of Paterson, NJ. Pastor McCall accepted the tremendous calling and delivered the Word on Sunday, November 25, 2012. With the arrival of Pastor, First Lady Phyllis McCall and family, we have seen the Lords grace and mercy with many who have acknowledged Jesus the Christ as their Lord and Savior, spiritual training, re-activation and creation of new ministries to name a few. On March 29, 2014, Pastor McCall ordained as Deacon, Deacon Thomas M. White and ordained Rev. Stanley L. Ellington and Rev. Lillie Blakeley Holman as Reverends on May 3, 2014. In January 2016 we've adopted the “Team New Zion: Pillars of Leadership having Commitment, Conviction, Competency and Character’ as a dictum. As we commemorate in March 2016, 90 years of standing as a beacon of light in this community and through Gods anointing and under the Leadership of Rev. McCall, we are pressing towards the future (however, not forgetting our past) endeavors to go forth as it states in our church mission to be “A Ministry Where Everyone Counts” [Ephesians 4:4] and our church vision for We are a church whose aim is to Disciple people through the Holy Scriptures, Our Words, and Our Conduct as we grow towards Christian Maturity. We are a church whose aim is to make sure that every member has Involvement in a ministry that allows their God given gift to be used to His Glory and the Edification of the Body of Christ. We are a church whose aim is to show Stewardship through our resources, commitment, and skills for the furtherance of the Kingdom of God here on Earth. Pastor McCall served faithfully as the Under-Shepherd until he resigned on September 6, 2016. New Zion Baptist Church is going forth in the matchless name of Jesus the Christ with prayer and supplication as we endeavor to seek a pastor of this great church. Sis. Betty Blakeley Smauldon Church Clerk NZBC 90" Anniversary Banquet Church History Friday, March 18, 2016 Pursuant to our available records, the Wall Avenue Baptist Church was organized in Ogden, Utah as a mission in 1916. The red brick bungalow style chapel with a small steeple erected in 1918 and dedicated in May 1919. There were several Under Shepherds who stood in John’s shoes from 1917 — 1929. The Reverend L.A. Platt of Ontario, CA became of the first pastor of the Wall Avenue Baptist Church on October 2, 1930. On April 8, 1952, the Reverend B.J. Washington was called as the Pastor and he rendered faithfully for 6 years. During his leadership, the congregation grew to where a new church building was needed. From this effort, the Wall Avenue Baptist Church became the New Zion Baptist Church at 2935 Lincoln Avenue in Ogden, Utah. This name was submitted by Sis. Jimmie Lee Bell. During this process, several special events had taken place in 1954, the Ground Breaking Services was on May, the Laying of the Foundation in November, Laying of the Cornerstone in October. The First Church Service was on Sunday, March 25, 1956 and with the Dedication Service on October 26, 1958. For each year thereafter, we celebrate our “first” church service on Palm Sunday which is in the form of the Church Anniversary Service. Additionally, we also celebrate, the fourth Sunday in October, the “dedication” of our church in the form of Loyalty Day Service. Through the many years of our member's faithfulness, prayers and perseverance, New Zion has had dedicated pastors from 1961 to late 2012 who contributed to sustain the Godly light of the New Zion Baptist Church in the community and surrounding areas. The church is grateful to God for providing from Our own congregation, preachers and teachers who stood in John’s shoes during the interim of our prayerfully seeking a Pastor, and they are; Rev. Cal Carter (Emeritus), Rev. Michelle Boyer, Rev. Lillie Holman, Min. Michael Smauldon, and Rev. Stanley Ellington. As we have come this far by faith, we continue to see God’s grace and mercy. On September 27, 2012, we began a new journey of faith and ministry at the New Zion Baptist Church, when the Lord spoke and we extended the call to the Reverend Carey E. McCall, Ill, M.Div., of Paterson, NJ, and he accepted the call and tremendous responsibility as the Angel of this great church. Upon the arrival of him, Lady Phyllis, Bro. Bijan and Sis. Afton McCall, Pastor McCall delivered his first “Proclamation of the Gospel” on sunday, November 25, 2012. since the arrival of Pastor McCall, we have seen the Lords blessings, with many who have acknowledged Jesus the Christ as their Lord and Savior and being baptized in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, re-activation and creation of new ministries to name a few. Through Gods anointing and under the leadership of Pastor McCall, we have powerful and enlightening spiritual training, excellent and in-depth Bible Studies. Our worship service is led by the Holy Spirit with sound Biblical preaching, exalting the Lord as the head of the church with high praise and worship services. We will solider on as “Team New Zion” with great expectation and anticipation as it states in our church mission that New Zion is A Place Where “Everyone Counts Ministry” (Ephesians 4:4). Praise ye the Lord for the marvelous things He has done! Thus, the Wall Avenue Baptist Church had a new building and a new name. Reverend Washington pastured New Zion until 1961. 5 NZ Church History “Golden Anniversary” April 9, 2006 Page 2 Following each year thereafter, we celebrate our “first” church service on Palm Sunday which is in the form of the Church Anniversary Service. He delivered his first sermon on May 1, 2005. And if it’s Gods will and by the power of the Holy Spirit, we will maintain and hold fast to our motto, “The Church Built By Faith”’. May you always be blessed to drink from our Lords cup and may His grace be with your spirit! Written by Sister Betty Blakeley-Smauldon, NZBC Clerk |
