Smith served from 1974 to 1984 as general president of the Relief Society organization of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, one of the oldest and largest women’s organizations in the world. Mrs. Smith, born in Salt Lake City, is president of American Mothers Inc. She also served as co-chairwoman of the group’s 1994 annual convention in Salt Lake City. She has written seven books and lectured extensively in most countries in the world on the importance of women. Raymond S. Uno is a retired court judge and serves as senior judge of Utah’s third-district court. Mr. Uno, born in Ogden, graduated from Weber College in 1954. He also earned bachelor’s, master’s and juris doctor’s degrees from the University of Utah. Mr. Uno’s public service includes positions as deputy Salt Lake County attorney and assistant attorney general for the state. Mr. Uno has served as a caseworker in the Salt Lake County welfare department and a referee of the third district Mrs. Smith served her church as a Relief Society, Primary and Young Women’s representative in Asia, and as a member of several boards including the educational juvenile court. system board of trustees, the Lion House board of advisors, and Cummings. Mr. Uno worked in the legal firm of Madsen, Uno the Promised Valley Playhouse advisory committee, the Mr. Uno was a member of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Welfare Services executive committee, the LDS Social Human Rights Commission; the Norman S. Andersen, M.D. Services board of trustees and the BYU board of trustees. Her civic service includes membership on the National Advisory Committee for the White House Confer- Award Foundation; the College of Social and Behavioral ence on Families under former U.S. President Jimmy Carter. She also was president of the Utah chapter for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect, committee member of the Utah Society for the Prevention of Blindness, executive committee member of the National Council of Women of the United States and on the board of the Salt Lake Area Chapter of the American Red Cross. She is married to Douglas H. Smith. They have seven children and 38 grandchildren. He lists as one of his greatest accomplishments the fact that he cares for his 100-year-old mother. Mr. Uno is married to Yoshiko Uno. They are the parents of five sons. |
